This document summarizes a study on assessing the environmental performance of hotels in Accra, Ghana. It includes the objectives, hypotheses, literature review, methodology, findings, and conclusions of the study. The study found that larger and upscale hotels had better environmental performance than smaller hotels. It was also found that the size and class of a hotel best predict its environmental performance. The document recommends improvements like encouraging voluntary environmental programs, education, green development practices, and a shift to waste reduction and recycling.
Green and sustainability is the major issue among the third world war countries in
each and every sector. This situation rises since, 1993 when LPG is brought into
picture. The international and unified standards in product and services quality are
the minimal expectation of the customers today. The global benchmarks for quality
and measuring performance are common in all most all the sectors. Similarly, there is
no exception to the hotel industry in this regard. In this parlance, the role of
employees and their level of awareness, perceptions on green and sustainability
practices dimension is need of the hour. On the basis of the same the current study is
conducted. The purpose of this study is to find out the perceptional differences
between the different demographical groups of employees with regard to awareness,
adoption, implementation, perceived benefits, and suggestions for better
implementation of environmental sustainability practices in star hotels in Chennai
city.
Data required for the study is collected from participants representing star hotels
and event venues in the city. The questionnaire is prepared by using standard
questions taken from review of literature. The results indicated that the level of
awareness on the green and sustainable practices related to recycling, energy
efficiency, waste control, water conservation, environment management,
transportation and purchasing areas is high and adequate among the sample. Every
employee feels the responsibility in the dimension of green practices. There is a highly
significant relationship between the demographical groups with regard to green and
sustainability practices. Some of the hotels in the industry are international quality

So far, two UNDP-hosted workshops (June and October 2017) – attended by over 70 officials from departments under MoAC – have focused on prioritization for adaptation planning, using multi-criteria analysis (MCA); and developing a preliminary screening system for ranking and fine-tuning ongoing climate-sensitive projects and programmes.
The workshop in June focused on providing an overview of MCA as a tool to priority actions. Participants gained a better appreciation of the process and key steps involved, as well as its strengths and limitations in the context of climate adaptation planning. Feedback and key insights were also gained by MOAC on how MCA could be used in the context of implementing Thailand’s new sectoral climate change strategy (ACCSP).
In a follow-up workshop in October, participants learned the key steps to apply tools and methods in the context of their work.
After identifying key areas from the revised five-year Agricultural Climate Change Strategic Plan 2017-2021, MoAC’s is enhancing its capacity with the support of the NAP-Ag programme to to prioritize these activities, which will be funded under the Ministry’s annual budgetary cycle and put forward to international climate funds.

21. Other Stakeholders’ Perception
Hotels in Accra were generally perceived as having both
positive and negative impacts on the environment.
“Before this hotel was located here, the whole of the
beach used to be very dirty and I could see even women
defecating on the beach everyday...... sometimes our
fishermen step in faeces when they are pulling their nets”
(opinion leader at Kokrobite)
“There are different categories of hotels, hotels in urban
areas are not impacting…..though waste is the major
problem……large scale hotels and resorts in
environmentally sensitive areas are the ones impacting…”

where our fishermen operated their business......now
they have been forced to move to a smaller place which

• Stakeholders were of the opinion that hotels were doing
very well was in the use of local materials as well as
sanitation and waste management but needed to
improve in the areas of environmental health,
community support, compliance, recycling and
environmental education.
