A willingness to pay for the entry fee study was conducted in the largest protected area in Nepal using the contingent valuation method. The results indicate that international tourists are willing to pay far more than the current entry fee. The implications on the financial sustainability of the park are discussed.
Stakeholder Knowledge and Understanding of Sustainable Tourism Management in ...cwrobel
This study examined the knowledge and understanding of sustainable tourism (ST) in relation to key channels and sources of ST information of four key stakeholder groups in the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants in three sites located along the most popular trekking routes with economies heavily reliant on tourism. Important differences among stakeholders were identified and related to sources of knowledge sharing. Implications on ST development and management, as well as emerging issues facing ST and park management, were explored.
The hotel industry is one industry that depends on clean and attractive environments but also has the potential of impacting negatively on the environment. Studies have shown that hotels generate excessive waste and consume large amounts of natural resources including water and energy. The steady growth in number of hotels in Accra is therefore a source of environmental concern. Globally, there have been calls from governments, host communities, consumers, NGOs and other stakeholders for hotels to engage in sustainable tourism practices. Many hotels mostly in the developed world are yielding to these calls and embarking on sustainable tourism practices by undertaking a number of environmental initiatives. However, the environmental performance of hotels in Ghana is not exactly known. Also, studies on the environmental performance of hotels have been restricted to the supply side; reporting environmental practices and initiatives by hotel businesses with customers and other stakeholders being left out of the picture.
It is against this background that this study sought to assess the environmental performance of hotels in Accra. The study adopted the mixed methods approach. The stratified random sampling method was employed in surveying 200 hotel managers from the different categories of hotels in Accra. There was also a survey of 343 international tourists at various attraction sites in Accra and an indepth interview of six key informants from stakeholder organizations and host communities. The study was carried out from 1st June to 8th August 2010. The data collected from the field was edited, coded and processed using SPSS software (version 16).
The study revealed that collectively, the hotels performed creditably in terms of environmental health and pollution prevention, their support for local communities and in green purchasing. However they performed abysmally in the area of voluntary environmental management. However, there were significant differences in the environmental performance of different categories of hotels. A regression analysis indicated the significant influence of the size and class of hotels on their environmental performance. Also international tourists had a positive attitude towards environmental management by hotels and were even willing to pay more to stay in hotels that are environmental-conscious. The general perception of the environmental performance of hotels by stakeholders was that it was satisfactory, though they thought there was more room for improvement.
For hotels in Accra to improve their environmental performance, there should be greater collaboration with stakeholders, education and training of managers, government policy to encourage voluntary environmental programmes and a shift towards green hotel development.
