- 3. 1. INTRODUCTION PathwayGroup is committed to delivering its services within a context of promoting sustainable development. This principle is as a key part of our corporate and social responsibility policy. Our policy guidelines and targets regarding key environmental issues include transport, energy consumption, building and development, water usage, hazardous chemicals and toxic substances, waste management, purchasing, environmental education and implementation. We are guided by the requirements of government legislation and the advice provided by the Environment Agency and the local authority. As a further dimension in our commitment to sustainable development, we promote economic and social inclusion through our programmes using demographic data to target the most deprived wards in the geographical areas where we work and monitoring participants’ socio-economic profi les to ensure that we are attracting, engaging, supporting and ultimately improving the life chances of the most disadvantaged members of society and supporting the development of sustainable communities most in need of our skills training provision. - 4. 2. RELEVANT LEGISLATION Environmental legislation and regulation is extremely broad in both its scope and impact on the work situation. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Aff airs (Defra) has a role in overseeing sustainable development across central government Our policy pledges to exceed minimum expected standards under current legal requirements and ensure that we are responsive to comply with future legislation designed to protect the environment. This policy is promoted by Pathway Group to all our partners and stakeholders. We understand that the issues involved in maintaining compliance and keeping up to date with best practice can be complex and we are able to draw on the advice and guidance of the Environment Agency and local authority environmental health services. 3. OTHER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Environmental impact is a horizontal issue which is relevant to all Pathway Group planning and practice. Specifi c Pathway Group policy documents which complement and expand on issues mentioned in this policy document are our: • Environmental Management System (EMS) Manual • Green Housekeeping Policy • Health and Safety Policy • Staff Development Policy • Staff Handbook. 2.

OTHER POLICIESAND PROCEDURES Examples include encouraging and monitoring the impact of: • Staff use of cycles and public transport whenever feasible • Car share and transport planning • Re-cycling of offi ce consumables e.g. ink cartridges • Offi ce paper re-cycling scheme • Participation in local environmental initiatives including volunteering and re-cycling and refurbishing projects e.g. re-cycling computers and cycles for the use of disadvantaged people • Target setting relevant to key environmental issues including: energy consumption, water usage, waste management • Environmental education 5. SUSTAINABLE GROWTH • Business Planning We make sure that our business plans contain actions that contribute to sustainable development and that managers review their progress towards sustainable development every year. • Sustainability Indicators We are reviewing our sustainable development indicators and our environmental indicators to make sure that we are taking full account of these issues in developing company strategies. 6. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The safeguarding of the environment is a shared responsibility for all Pathway Group employees and is a key consideration in planning and delivering all our activities. The Director takes responsibility for making sure that the company’s policies regarding the environment are implement and reviewed in line with new legislation and best practice. 3.
