Environmental Degradation Within Lake Naivasha Basin Kenya
Presented by Godfrey, O. Onyango

Location of Kenya in Africa
Location of National Parks/Masaai people
Kenya is rich in Biodiversity/wildlife
 Lake Naivasha is a fresh water lake in Kenya
 Provides habitat to a variety of wildlife
 Plays a very important role in national development
 Lake Naivasha basin has undergone rapid land use transformations
 There is increased demand for the scarce environmental resources and
services, especially water and land
 Rapid population growth
 Likelihood of increased environmental degradation is certain unless mitigation
measures are put in place.
 What is not immediately clear is whether or not the water users such as flower
growing companies are aware of the environmental consequences of their
actions.
 Or could it be that they lack essential scientific information on the basis of
which they could make more informed decisions on management of the basin’s
resources.
Background of Lake Naivasha
Expansion without infrastructure
Ground water
Environmental degradation
Malewa River
Best management practices
Background cont’d
 Rampant discharge of raw sewage into the Lake
 Number of bird and fish species found on the lake has been declining
 Inappropriate fishing practices using undersize nets, fishing in non fishing
zone, and unlicensed fish men/boats
 Another problem is geothermal energy production in Olkaria
 The quantity of data and research on Lake Naivasha and its drainage is
overwhelming (Robert et al 2006).
 Despite all these, environmental degradation is still a threat
 Utilization of the environmental scientific information may be achieved by
carrying out stakeholder analysis, determining their environmental scientific
information needs, and coming up with appropriate ways to disseminate
environmental scientific information to the stakeholders and methods to
develop stakeholder advisory board
Consequences
Managing Lake Naivasha
outside of the natural
variability will result in
water scarcity with
potentially dire
consequences for humans
dependent on this vital
source of water. It call for
involvement of all
stakeholders.

Editor's Notes

  1. Kenya is located on the Eastern side of Africa, it has population of approximately 40 million people. It has 41 tribe Capital city is Nairobi
  2. See locations of national parks in relation to Nairobi Maasai women and children Young Masaai moran who are being initiated from being boys to adults
  3. Elephants, giraffe, Zebra, lion and lioness
  4. The Rapid expansion of flower farms and resulting rise in population in such a short time has led to the large increase in settlements without any sort of planning or infrastructure. Raw sewage and waste flow freely into the ground and into the lake; may have some serious implications for the residents of these slums
  5. map of groundwater boreholes Groundwater is an important source of drinking water for most of the settlements in the region. This picture on the top left shows one of the borehole access points in Karagita – the largest slum that sits just below crescent lake on the south east
  6. Large scale degradation is occurring in the upper catchment of Malewa and Gilgil river. Causes of catchment degradation have been deforestation, encroachment of river by agriculture and population pressure as well the construction of the reservoirs for water supply to nearby towns of Gilgil and Nakuru. All of the activities have caused reduced water infiltration , increased incidences of flash flood, soil erosion and increased siltation of the Lake
  7. VanKleef flowers best example of an environmentally responsible flower farm due to roses in the greenhouses are grown in long plastic troughs, they’re grown in coco peat which has good water retention and can be reused and the roses are watered using drip irrigation, which is the most efficient form of irrigation. They Recycle their runoff which reduces their water and fertiliser use; the picture in the bottom left shows their computerised recycling system They also collect and recycle rain fall in a large reservoir (bottom center) which further reduces their abstraction from the lake They use a fully computerised system to control the environmental conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity and fertilizer treatment, in each greenhouse (top right) If more farms were forced to implement even a few of these best management practices – especially those related to water conservation, then I feel that maybe there is some hope after all.
