The Environment Protection Act
1986 was introduced after the
Bhopal gas Tragedy
• To co-ordinate the activities of the various regulatory
agencies already in existence.
• To appoint environment officers to check environmental
pollution
• To improve the quality of life by protection of environment
• Establishing environmental laboratories
• To protect the forests and wildlife in the country
• To provide the protection and improvement of environment.
• In EPA, article 48A, specify that theState shall protect and
improve theenvironment.
• Also to safeguard the forests and wildlifeof the country.
• Acc. to sec 51(A) everycitizenshall protect the
environment.
• EPAis applicable to whole India, includingJ&K
• With all these objectivesthe basic objective for the
formation of EPAWas sustainable development
• To make rules to regulate environmentalpollution;
• To notify standards and maximum limits of pollutants of
air,water, and soil for various areas and purposes;
• Prohibition and restriction on the handling of hazardous
substances, and location of industries (Sections 3-6)
