INDIA
● Rules & regulation to regulate human
activities that affect or likely to affect the
environment.
● In 1982 , Government of India established
National Council of Environmental Planning
& Coordination under Department of
Science & Technology.
3. Objectives ●To regulate indiscriminate use of natural resources
●To protect our environment and biodiversity
●To punish or sue those who harm the environment
●To resolve conflict between parties
●To enable the authority concerned, to take legal
action against those who violate environmental
rules

functions
●Plan and organise pollution prevention
programmes
●Provide proper guidelines and avoid conflicts
●Conduct awareness programmes through mass
media
●Conduct investigations and research
●Collect data, analyse and publish statistical results
●Co-ordinate the state board and guide them
properly.
7. THE WATER
ACT
●Water Act (1974) focussed on the prevention
of discharging domestic and industrial
wastewater into water bodies without
treatment.
●This act provides establishment of pollution
boards at Centre and state level (CPCB and
SPCB) to act as watchdogs for prevention and
control of pollution.
8. OBJECTIVES ○ Prevention and control of water pollution
○ Maintenance or restoration of wholesomeness
(the quality of being beneficial)of water
○ Provides authority to pollution control agencies
to collect and analyse the water samples
○ Concern over discharge of sewage and effluent
○ Applying penalties to the offenders
○ Clear guidelines and description of procedure
for sanctioning permit
9. Amendment -1988
●A minor change or addition designed to improve water act.
●Giving power to the board to close a water polluting industry to
withdraw the supply of electricity and water by an administrative
order
11. THE AIR ACT ●Prevent, control and abate air pollution-
Under Article 253 of Constitution of India.
●Get sanction from pollution control agencies
(CPCB and SPCB) for starting industry
●Empower the agencies to enter, analyse and
take appropriate action on the organisations
dealing with air pollutants
●Preserve the quality of air
●Enable pollution control agencies to fix
pollutant levels and control measures
●Control noise pollution- Amendment in 1987

ACT (1986)
●Empowers central govt. to prevent and
control the pollution
●To establish authorities to control the
pollution and protect the environment
●To close, regulate and prohibit the working of
an organisation or the process involved
●Standards for emission is clearly mentioned
with many amendments and notifications
●Freedom to individuals to approach legal
authorities against violation of rules
●Penalties for the defaulters are prescribed
