ENSURE A SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO
YOUR NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE
If you’re about to change company, have you caught yourself wondering how do
you transfer your effective leadership skills from one organisation to another?
TIPS FOR LEADING A NEW ORGANISATION:
 Learn the organisation’s history:
Start your job with a full understanding of the
organisation’s past, so you can become familiar with
its purpose and its values.
 Identify strengths:
Unless you have been brought in to help a company that is
failing, it is a mistake to start your job with the opinion that
its practices are inferior to those at your previous
workplace. In the first week or so, try to identify the
strengths that exist.
 Get to know people:
Ask employees questions about how they perceive
their roles and the general direction of the
organisation. This will increase your understanding of
the company, and help you establish a rapport with
people as early as possible.
 Observe:
If you take some time to watch how people work, you
can identify how to handle different people.
 Understand the power structure:
Seek to understand the culture of the department and
the staff. The sub-culture is often extremely
influential, so you should try to gain the confidence of
the informal leaders.
 Ask staff for ideas:
Simply introducing your own ideas right away as the
‘new way of doing things’ can create resentment
among your new team, so it is wise to ask people for
their own ideas. These people have been working at
the company for years, and their ‘insider’ view could
prove valuable.
 Be approachable:
Walk around and introduce yourself to everyone on the
team, no matter their position. Be open and make yourself
available at least once every day.
 Smile:
Ensure that your body language reflects how happy you
are to be there, so that your new employees see you as an
appreciative and interested leader.
FINAL TIPS
Becoming a successful leader at a new organisation can be
seamless but just be mindful of the different people and values.
Learn how to manage change, cultivate relationships, and
navigate the different dynamics which exist.
You can help improve the business with your own ideas but also
try to observe the good qualities of your new workplace, and be
open to doing things differently.

Ensure a smooth transition into your new leadership role

  • 1. ENSURE A SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO YOUR NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE If you’re about to change company, have you caught yourself wondering how do you transfer your effective leadership skills from one organisation to another?
  • 2. TIPS FOR LEADING A NEW ORGANISATION:  Learn the organisation’s history: Start your job with a full understanding of the organisation’s past, so you can become familiar with its purpose and its values.
  • 3.  Identify strengths: Unless you have been brought in to help a company that is failing, it is a mistake to start your job with the opinion that its practices are inferior to those at your previous workplace. In the first week or so, try to identify the strengths that exist.
  • 4.  Get to know people: Ask employees questions about how they perceive their roles and the general direction of the organisation. This will increase your understanding of the company, and help you establish a rapport with people as early as possible.
  • 5.  Observe: If you take some time to watch how people work, you can identify how to handle different people.  Understand the power structure: Seek to understand the culture of the department and the staff. The sub-culture is often extremely influential, so you should try to gain the confidence of the informal leaders.
  • 6.  Ask staff for ideas: Simply introducing your own ideas right away as the ‘new way of doing things’ can create resentment among your new team, so it is wise to ask people for their own ideas. These people have been working at the company for years, and their ‘insider’ view could prove valuable.
  • 7.  Be approachable: Walk around and introduce yourself to everyone on the team, no matter their position. Be open and make yourself available at least once every day.  Smile: Ensure that your body language reflects how happy you are to be there, so that your new employees see you as an appreciative and interested leader.
  • 8. FINAL TIPS Becoming a successful leader at a new organisation can be seamless but just be mindful of the different people and values. Learn how to manage change, cultivate relationships, and navigate the different dynamics which exist. You can help improve the business with your own ideas but also try to observe the good qualities of your new workplace, and be open to doing things differently.
