? Fake news
To conduct successful research, need to understand what it is you are trying to achieve. Independent research as a process.
Quick demo library search.
1. dreamworld AND medieval literature with everything except articles. Ask the question, why do we get no results?
In Library search, looking for books, what sort of information would we be looking for?
2. Try dream AND medieval literature. Select a book returned. Point out details tab. How has that book been described? Have different terms been used than we are searching for? Add them to your lit search.
3. Try choosing a particular author and doing LS on them? e.g Chaucer
2. Dreamworld AND medieval literature in everything. Choose an article and demo going through LS
3. a Specific database demo.
1. go to subject guide for English
2. MLA International Bibliography demo (dreamworld OR dreamscape OR dream) AND medieval literature vs. changing to Chaucer. Note the difference in the search result list.
3. Demo exporting details so that can store references.
4. Mention if working from a known source, search for keywords from the title and author’s surname. Save on the scrolling.
Subject Guide – demo rather than from slide. Mention other sections that may be relevant depending on chosen topic. Point out topic focus, newspapers & other English lit sources box at the bottom of the page.
Just highlight difference between using subject guide and LS. Mention when move onto a longer piece of research, will need to consider using resources from subject guide as may have exhausted what was found in LS
Also mention other subject guides that may help including EndNote and subject guides
With an extended piece of research, need to stay up to date with new material published in you area. All databases have the option to set up a personal account.
Go back to MLA International Bibliography to show ebsco account. Also mention share option.
Citation searching. Demo in Google Scholar cited by and mention using bibliographies. If time, demo in SCOPUS the references option. Use Chaucer search and limit to articles.
Skip over if time is limited. Summary of what will have mentioned in database demo.
4000 words is on the long side, and if do a full dissertation it is 10,000 words, so it’s worth having a system. Doesn’t have to be complicated. In Word, download app to your phone e.g. RefMe or just dump references in a Word document as you go. Demo in Ebsco the cite option.
