What is a stereotype?
A set idea that people have about what someone or
something is like, especially an idea that is wrong:
● racial/sexual stereotypes
(Cambridge Dictionary, 2017)
That means that a stereotype is a preconceived
conception or image that is formulated from a person
or group of people just because of their appearance,
tastes or skills and that, most of the time it is
discriminatory and prejudicial.
Types of stereotypes in teenagers
- Clothes
- Physical appearance
- People think that they consume
psychotropic substances
- Social Media
- The conception of life
Stereotyped by clothing
Stereotyped by physical appearance
Stereotype by what they consume
One of the most used stereotypes in adolescents is drugs and alcohol, but according to
the survey, many children prefer to use the Internet and social networks instead of
going out on a Friday. However, if a teenager has problems with any of these
psychotropic substances, he is immediately offered the attention and counseling he
needs to prevent him from continuing this activity that harms him.
It is very important to recognize the role of social programs that have allowed the
percentage of teens who smoke or drink, or who are harassed in their schools to
decrease; And also, the role of parents and fundamentally the same teenagers.
Social Media and Teens
Some kids nowadays have social networks.
And those networks are awesome if kids use
them in a good way, however sometimes some
guys use this social media to see how popular
they are, even post inappropriate photos to
get more likes.
In the other hand, some teenagers want to be
like a model or like an actor or other famous
people, which can be good, but if the teen
change their physical aspect to be like that
singer or model is wrong.
Why is this conception so common?
Kurt Cobain, with his famous song “Smells like
teen spirit”, turned a song into an anthem for
the youth of the lates 1991, when teens were
feeling disaffected.
