On Twitter, young people share their tweets on various subjects as the favorite ones get more retweets. Through the various social media sites, individuals become famous for all the wrong reasons. These are the ones whose Facebook status updates are liked most, their tweets retweeted the most times as well as their photos on Instagram liked most.
Social media sites have a great influence on teenagers today and the impact continued to increase over the years. For instance, teenagers on Twitter had grown significantly from 16% to 24%. The typical teenager on Facebook has at least three hundred friends while a typical teenager on Twitter has more than seventy-eight followers. Research indicates that at present teenagers are not as enthusiastic about Facebook as they were in the past. There are more adults on Facebook; therefore, making it more boring and there is more drama and chances of clashing. An estimated 60% of teenagers on Facebook keep their profiles rather private and they report high levels of confidence in their quest to manage their settings.
Many parents often ask themselves what their children are always doing on the internet and in particular social media all day long. It is important for these parents to understand that social media is now a way of life. One of the greatest effects of social media is that it is addictive. It is said that people have to log in to Facebook at least five times a day. It has become such a way life and a way to communicate with the rest of the world that a person cannot stay away from social media. According to studies, at least 63% of American have to log on to Twitter on a daily basis. Further, 40% of Americans log on more than once a day, a fact that almost all teenagers now have a mobile phone with them. This makes it easier for them to access social media sites as often as possible. This is not positive since it means that they will get addicted.
Getting addicted to social media is like any other addiction because people are not in a position to interact with other people since they do not have time to waste. The Effects of Twitter and Instagram on Teenagers
Today, sharing of private information has become the norm.
Every person, in particular the young people update their
statuses on a daily basis as they go about their activities. People
use social media sites such as Instagram to share their photos of
themselves of their day-to-day lives. In addition, Facebook is a
platform that is used to share with people what was on their

more retweets. Through the various social media sites,
individuals become famous for all the wrong reasons. These are
the ones whose Facebook status updates are liked most, their

Social media sites have a great influence on teenagers today and
the impact continued to increase over the years. For instance,
teenagers on Twitter had grown significantly from 16% to 24%.
The typical teenager on Facebook has at least three hundred
friends while a typical teenager on Twitter has more than
seventy-eight followers. Research indicates that at present
2. teenagers are not as enthusiastic about Facebook as they were in
the past. There are more adults on Facebook; therefore, making
it more boring and there is more drama and chances of clashing.
An estimated 60% of teenagers on Facebook keep their profiles
rather private and they report high levels of confidence in their
quest to manage their settings.
Many parents often ask themselves what their children are
always doing on the internet and in particular social media all
day long. It is important for these parents to understand that
social media is now a way of life. One of the greatest effects of
social media is that it is addictive. It is said that people have to
log in to Facebook at least five times a day. It has become such
a way life and a way to communicate with the rest of the world
that a person cannot stay away from social media. According to
studies, at least 63% of American have to log on to Twitter on a
daily basis. Further, 40% of Americans log on more than once a
day, a fact that almost all teenagers now have a mobile phone
with them. This makes it easier for them to access social media
sites as often as possible. This is not positive since it means
that they will get addicted.
Getting addicted to social media is like any other addiction
because people are not in a position to interact with other
people since they do not have time to waste. Social media starts
in the most harmless way possible. It starts to act as a source of
distraction as well as boredom relief. Comments and likes are a
positive reinforcement for people who had posted statuses or
photos making it difficult for the individuals to stop that which
they are doing. This addiction is common such that researchers
create a scale, which can measure this particular addiction
called ‘The Berge Facebook Addiction Scale’.
Secondly, through Instagram, people are put in the unavoidable
position of comparing their lives with other people. Many
people post videos, photos, and statuses on social media after
careful review particularly when it comes to photos. They only
3. post those photos, which look the best and when they are in the
best places. In addition, they only post the photos that they are
with big people. Their statuses are well thought out and they
only post the ones that they know will be thought provoking. It
means that the ‘people’ we see on social media are an idealized
version of themselves and only present the best of themselves.
When other teenagers look at their profiles they compare the
lives their friends live on Twitter with the one that they have.
Usually, this has a negative effect on the teenager leaving them
depressed and feeling sorry for themselves. This they do
without realizing that the people on Twitter that they compare
themselves with only lead fake lives, so to speak. A research
study indicated that out of the 53% of users who claimed that
Twitter in particular had changed their behaviors. Out of that
population, 51% claimed that it had changed their behaviors
negatively, which they felt was brought about by the fact that
they compared themselves with other individuals.
Cyberbullying is now a real and uncontrollable threat that has
been brought to humankind by social media. Among
adolescents, social media remains a big problem in the twenty
first century. A research indicates that more than 95% of
adolescents who are active on social media have witnessed
cyberbullying. On the other hand, 33% of these individuals have
been victims themselves. Cyberbullying is like real life
bullying. The only difference is that the bullies hide behind the
anonymity of their computers. This way, it is much harder for
the bullies to be traced and brought to book. Particularly, it may
target teenage girls who they know already do not have a high
level of self-esteem. There have been many incidents on the
news in recent times that have committed suicide after they
were not able to cope with the effects of bullying anymore. The
police, parents, teachers, guidance, and counsellors are working
round the clock to deal with cyber bullies and curb this is the
nib before it becomes catastrophic.
4. Social media has glamourized alcohol and drug use. When a
teenager posts a supposed cool photo of himself in a room that
is smoky as he sips some vodka and smokes some marijuana, he
is more likely to get more likes and comments than another boy
of his age who posts a photo of himself in the school library.
Teenagers have not changed much and the idea of cool is the
same as it has been over the years. Teenagers will consider drug
and alcohol to be used. Using social media to propagate these
vices in society, a certain study which explored the relationship
that existed between social media, teenagers, and the use of
drugs found a number of things. 70% of teenagers who are
between the ages of twelve and seventeen use social media and
that those who interact with social media daily are up to five
times more likely to try smoking tobacco and thrice more likely
to use alcohol as well as twice as likely to use marijuana.
Further, up to 40% admitted to having been exposed to pictures
of individuals who were under the influence through social
media suggesting that there is a correlation between these two
factors. Although this is just an association, there exists a
relationship between the use of social media and the abuse of
drugs.
Social networking sites lead to the Fear of Missing Out, which
is referred to as FOMO on social media. FOMO is a
phenomenon that occurs when a person feels the pressure to do
something, which one is not currently doing. The pressure is to
do what others are doing, which is related to using drugs as well
as comparing oneself with others. The fear of missing out is
really what people used to called peer pressure before social
media. When a teenager sees another on social media taking
some wine, he or she will automatically feel the need to also
drink that wine. Therefore, this teenager will also buy glass of
wine that he or she will post on social media hoping to get
similar likes and comments as his friend. FOMO makes the
individual to feel the need to attend each and every event as
5. well as share all life experiences. It could also evoke great
levels of social anxiety and cause those who use social media to
wonder why everyone seems to be having fun without them.
Studies have showed that people even feel insecure after using
pin interest since they feel that they are either not creative
enough or not crafty enough. Twitter and Facebook could also
make people to feel as if they are not smart or not successful
enough.
It is important that social media also have positive effects. One
of the effects is that it helps with socialization. Social media
has helped those who feel that they are not able to interact with
each other in a normal setting hide behind their computers and
make friends over the internet. Today, many couples have met
on Twitter and other social media sites and they are now
happily married. Therefore, introverted teenagers use Social
media as a platform to improve their social skills and take it to
another level. These introverts feel safer behind their gadget of
choice since they will not be picked on. In addition, social
media played a role in helping the teenagers to learn how to
express empathy towards one another.
Finally and probably most significantly, social media is
important for connectivity. In fact, social media websites are
designed for that purpose. There have been reference to the
ideas of Sigmund Freud in regards to ego, id, and super ego.
These references cite numerous examples, which are used to
elaborate on the fact that social media has positive
psychological effects. Social media does not transport us out of
our real lives. Relationships are preserved and revived through
the medium. I used positively, this is a tool for connecting old
friends and acquaintances as well as family members can use it
to stay in touch.
Conclusion
6. Social media is now an integral part of the lives of teenagers
and the population in general. Therefore, it is best to use it in a
manner that is positive and will ensure positive influences on
the lives of the teenagers. The extreme and perverse way that
some teenagers use social media should be discouraged from an
early age.
Anthony wrote: "the average investor should be checking out
the cash flows statement in general to understand the general
trend and solidity of a company. Accrual basis data doesn't give
nearly as much foresight into future projections of how a
company". As indicated in Anthony's response, the statement of
cash flows shows the uses and sources of: cash during for the
operating, investing, and financing activities of a company.
The balance sheet and income statement are prepared using the
accrual basis of accounting.
The statement above regarding the investor's assessment of the
general trend and solidity of a company is assuming that all
cash transactions are correctly classified as operating, investing
or financing activities on the statement of cash flows. Take a
look at the ethics case presented in BYP 12-9 that appears in the
Broadening Your Perspective section at the end of Chapter 12 in
the WileyPLUS Readings or on page 683 in the eBook version.
The ethics case provides additional information than presented
below, which are the key points of the case.
The board policy requires the statement of cash flows for
Templeton Automotive shows that net cash from operating
activities exceeds $1 million dollars. However, the net cash
from operating activities amounts to $970,000. The president of
the company asks Nick, the controller if there is any way to
increase the operating cash flows by $30,000 or more.
7. "Upon close scrutiny of the statement of cash flows, Nick
concludes that he can get the operating cash flows above $1
million by reclassifying a $60,000, 2-year note payable listed in
the financing activities section as "Proceeds from bank loan--
$60,000." He will report the note instead as "Increase in
payables--$60,000" and treat it as an adjustment of net income
in the operating activities section." (Kimmel, 2013)
Class, how does the misclassification of a financing activity as
an operating activity on the statement of cash flows impact the
decision making process of an external user as to the financial
status of the company?
