ADVERBS
AND
ADJECTIVES
Group 7- Gio, Faith, Nicole, Reynard, Shane
ADJECTIVE
- are the words you often use in describing
things, events, people’s character or physical
features.
- These are used in the sentence as
attributive, predicative, and complement.
Attributive
- is a one-word modifier
placed before the noun or
pronoun it describes.
- Example:
•Industrious Filipinos easily
get rich abroad.
•The honest driver received a
reward from the lady
passenger.
Predicative
- when an adjective is used a subjective
complement; meaning, after a linking verb, it
becomes predicative or predicate adjective.
- Examples:
•Filipinos are industrious.
•The driver is honest.
Complement
- functions to complete the meaning
of the subject or the object of a
transitive verb in a sentence.
- In completing the meaning of the
subject of a sentence, the complement
as Subjective Complement (SC); whilst
direct object of the sentence as
Objective Complement (OC).
Examples of
Complementary Adjectives
S SC
•Daniel is generous.
DO OC
•Many find Daniel generous.
Adjectives can both function as attributive
and predicative, but some of them function
only as attributive/predicative. In other
words, some adjectives are restricted to be
either of the two. Usually, restrictions of the
attributive function apply to senses; that is,
to be-verbs used as linking verbs.
The following are adjectives restricted to
a specific function:
Attributive-only adjectives
Never-Attributive adjectives
Adjective-in-series
- These are modifiers that come one after
another in a sentence.
- Arranged in the sentence side by side and
used to describe a noun or a pronoun in many
ways, there serial adjectives must follow this
sequence:
Limiting adjective(cardinal/ordinal) - quality -
size – shape - color – noun adj. and participle
Example of
Adjective-in-
series
• He got two, hard, tiny, circular,
green, steel, painted objects from
the woman’s basket.
ADVERBS

another adverb in the sentence.
•Adverb of Manner- speedily, slowly, etc.
•Adverb of Place- here, there, over, under, at, on, etc.
•Adverb of Time- tomorrow, yesterday, now, today,
later, etc.
•Adverb of Frequency- often, never, frequently, seldom,
etc.
Examples of Adverbs

speedily.

• She often goes to the cinema.
Adverbials
- are adjectives made into adverbs by adding
the suffix –ly to the adjective.
•Adjective
The skillful pilot made the aircraft land safely on the
runway.
•Adverbial
The pilot skillfully made the aircraft land on the runway
Roleplay?
• The Wind and the Sun
• The Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the
stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveller coming down the
road, and the Sun said: "I see a way to decide our dispute.
Whichever of us can cause that traveller to take off his
cloak shall be regarded as the stronger. You begin." So the
Sun retired behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow as
hard as it could upon the traveller. But the harder he blew
the more closely did the traveller wrap his cloak round him,
till at last the Wind had to give up in despair. Then the Sun
came out and shone in all his glory upon the traveller, who
soon found it too hot to walk with his cloak on. Kindness
effects more than severity.
