Using the combined knowledge of visual argument and the rhetorical situation allows us understand how the language (and symbols) of a text create meaning. Topic: Using elements of the Rhetorical Situation, write an analysis of an advertisement or political cartoon. The advertisement or cartoon may be found using YouTube, Google Images, or other Internet locations where advertisements or political cartoon may be found. Do not select topics from the following list unless you have permission from your instructor. These topics fall into the following categories: too broad (you will not write a book for this class), the topic is too current making reliable sources difficult to obtain, or the instructor has seen the issues too many times to read another paper on the issue. Be sure you have read “Ad Analysis” from Writing Commons. Audience: Gear your analysis for you, your classmates, your instructor, and the original audience for the visual selected. You will need to carefully review the intended audience for the piece. Length and Source Requirements: Essay should be 700-800 words in length, plus Works Cited/References page (follow APA or MLA format and documentation per your professor). The advertisement is the only source required. Format: Follow MLA or APA style for format and documentation as directed by your instructor. Focus: Your analysis should show the intended audience for the piece as well as the purpose and implied purpose for the piece. Carefully analyze how the piece has presented its ideas and what “tools” have been used to persuade the intended audience. When choosing a piece, choose a piece that captures your attention. In this 4-5 page paper, you will pick an advertisement about The Walking Dead to analyze and
evaluate how it creates an argument through multimodality.
Most media you encounter each day combines modes—news articles include photographs;
television shows include audio, verbal text, and gestures; websites make use of alphabetic text
and spatial arrangement; music contains both lyrics and sound. Even an academic paper has
multimodal elements such as font choice, double-spacing, margins, etc. By analyzing multimodal
texts you can become a more active viewer of the media that surrounds us and understand how
media shapes our understanding of the world.
Ultimately, your goal is to recognize and evaluate different modes in order to discover how the
modes work together to create arguments and how they respond to rhetorical situations. Your
thesis should make an argument for how you interpret the ad’s message and whether the ad is
successful or not (i.e. is it persuasive for its intended audience) based on its use of visual and
rhetorical strategies. In other words, you will take a stance about the piece and make an argument
about its messages and rhetorical strategies. In the body of your essay, you will use rhetorical
appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and concepts from visual design to specifically focus on HOW the
visual rhetoric works, not simply WHAT it conveys: discuss how the use of rhetorical appeals
determines the effectiveness of the visual argument. To complete the essay successfully, you

The marketing research process is undertaken to answer a wide variety of questions, which might include: "Where do our guests come from? How frequently do people dine out in this area? In what types of restaurants do they most frequently dine? If the seating capacity of a restaurant is expanded by 20 percent, what impact will this have on sales and profits? If the city builds a new convention center, how many additional room nights is that likely to bring to the city?"
Conducting market research is not an inexpensive proposition, and when research is undertaken, care must be taken to ensure that proper methods are used. This is true whether the hospitality organization conducts its own market research or relies on external consultants. Market research data are only as good as the methodology used. If poor methodology is used, the results are not likely to describe the situation accurately, and marketing decisions based on this information are not likely to be very appropriate. Figure 6.3 contains the five steps involved in the marketing research process.

Step 1: Define the Problem
Before initiating any marketing research effort, a firm must decide whether marketing research is necessary. In general, marketing research should be undertaken if it clarifies a problem that could impact your business, if it helps in selecting between alternatives for achieving marketing objectives, if it assists in gaining a competitive advantage, or if it provides useful information on your markets.1 Marketing research may not be needed if the information is already available, there is insufficient time for marketing research, resources are not available, or costs of conducting the research outweigh the potential benefits of having the information.
If the decision is made to proceed with the marketing research, the research problem should be clearly defined. What does the research effort propose to do? What types of questions need to be asked? Ultimately, your goal is to recognize and evaluate different modes in order to discover how the
modes work together to create arguments and how they respond to rhetorical situations. Your
thesis should make an argument for how you interpret the ad’s message and whether the ad is
successful or not (i.e. is it persuasive for its intended audience) based on its use of visual and
rhetorical strategies. In other words, you will take a stance about the piece and make an argument
about its messages and rhetorical strategies. In the body of your essay, you will use rhetorical
appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and concepts from visual design to specifically focus on HOW the
visual rhetoric works, not simply WHAT it conveys: discuss how the use of rhetorical appeals
determines the effectiveness of the visual argument. To complete the essay successfully, you
will need to discuss specific and concrete elements of the image/commercial as visual and/or
audio evidence.

Formatting Details
Margins
The left-hand margin must be 1inches (4 cm.). Margins at the right, top, and bottom of the page
should be 1.0 inch. (See exception for chapter title pages below.) The Research Report text may
be left-aligned (leaving a ragged right edge) or may be both left- and right-aligned (justified).
Line Spacing
Double-spacing is required for most of the text in documents submitted during the Research
Report process.
Paragraph Spacing
The text of the document is double-spaced. There should be no extra spaces between paragraphs
in sections, however, indent the first line of each paragraphs five spaces.
Page Numbering
All pages should have page numbers in Arabic numerals in the upper right-hand corner.
Type Style
The body text, the student should use 12-point Times New Roman. Text for the cover page may
be larger but should not exceed 14-point size. Text for the chapter title text should be 14-point

typeface or any settings on the word processor that would decrease the spacing between letters or

If "Never work!" was the apex of critical strategy in
the twentieth century, perhaps "Never play!" could
be the same point of extreme negation for the twenty-
first. It is of course almost impossible to never work,
but it at least defines an ambition: to abolish wage
labor and the commodity form.
It was and remains a surprisingly popular ambi-
tion. The cycle of struggles in the overdeveloped
world in the late twentieth century took it as their
lodestar, whether unwittingly or not. The whole
counterstrategy of making work seem like some-
thing else, like play even, stems from the boredom
that both wage labor and the commodity form
generated.
This boredom is spreading even to what was once
called the underdeveloped world. By their tens of
millions, peasants left the land, in China and else-
where, and in some cases ended up in the factories
that make the world's commodities. But it's getting
harder to keep them there. The riots and suicides at
Foxconn are just the tip of the iceberg. Nobody much
likes to do this sort of work if there's any option.
In the overdeveloped world, work is only one of
the ways of creating a value chain and extracting a
profit. The more advanced form of spectacular
economy extracts value from play. This is why the
critical slogan of the times might need to be "Never
play!" Where play was some kind of alternative for
so many late-twentieth-century avant-gardes, from
the Situationists to the Fluxus movement to the New
Games movement, the overdeveloped world in the
twenty-first century is all about recuperating those
energies, those desires, those appetites, for the com-
modity form.

The Social Life of Wireless Urban Spaces:
Internet Use, Social Networks, and the Public

This study explores the role of urban public spaces for democratic and social engagement.
It examines the impact of wireless Internet use on urban public spaces, Internet users, and
others who inhabit these spaces. Through observations of 7 parks, plazas, and markets in 4
North American cities, and surveys of wireless Internet users in those sites, we explore how
this new technology is related to processes of social interaction, privatism, and democratic
engagement. Findings reveal that Internet use within public spaces affords interactions with
existing acquaintances that are more diverse than those associated with mobile phone use.
However, the level of colocated social diversity to which Internet users are exposed is less
than that of most users of these spaces. Yet, online activities in public spaces do contribute
to broader participation in the public sphere. Internet connectivity within public spaces
may contribute to higher overall levels of democratic and social engagement than what is
afforded by exposure within similar spaces free of Internet connectivity.

Internet access in public parks, plazas, markets, and streets has been made possible
through the proliferation of broadband wireless Internet in the form of municipal
and community wi-fi (e.g., NYC Wireless) and advanced mobile phone networks
(e.g., 3G). The experience of wireless Internet use in the public realm contrasts with
traditional wired Internet use, which is confined primarily to the private realm of the
home and the parochial realm of the workplace. An extensive literature has addressed
the influence of Internet use on the composition of people’s social networks
(Hampton, Sessions, & Her, in press), their engagement in political, voluntary, and
other organizational activities (Boulianne, 2009), and their interactions within home
and workplaces (Bakardjieva, 2005; Quan-Haase & Wellman, 2006). But, Internet
use in the public realm has remained relatively unexplored. This type of use carries

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

These topics fall into the following categories: too broad (you will not write a book for this class), the topic is too current making reliable sources difficult to obtain, or the instructor has seen the issues too many times to read another paper on the issue. Be sure you have read “Ad Analysis” from Writing Commons. Audience: Gear your analysis for you, your classmates, your
- 2. instructor, and the original audience for the visual selected. You will need to carefully review the intended audience for the piece. Length and Source Requirements: Essay should be 700-800 words in length, plus Works Cited/References page (follow APA or MLA format and documentation per your professor). The advertisement is the only source required. Format: Follow MLA or APA style for format and documentation as directed by your instructor. Focus: Your analysis should show the intended audience for the piece as well as the purpose and implied purpose for the piece. Carefully analyze how the piece has presented its ideas and what “tools” have been used to persuade the intended audience. When choosing a piece, choose a piece that captures your attention. What argument is being made in that one piece? Who or what is the piece about? Organization and Development: After choosing the visual argument you will analyze, do some background reading. Use the parts of the Rhetorical Situation to help you analyze the advertisement selected: · Audience—who is the target audience for the piece? Young children (McDonald’s ads), Adults (Sandals Beach), Elderly (Medicare), etc. · Context—A little knowledge about the company or advertising agency may be useful. For instance, McDonald’s would not produce a commercial with Paris Hilton washing a Bentley (Hardees). · Purpose—Overall goal of the advertisement · Tone—Attitude toward the subject
- 3. · Arrangement—Where items are placed in the visual. Specific descriptions will be needed to help your reader visualize the piece. Location of each piece in the advertisement is important to the analysis. · Scale—Size can tell a great deal about the primary focus for the advertisement. · Text—Every text on an advertisement has a purpose. · Color—Do the colors act as a “flashing” light? In the movie Beetlejuice, the character Beetlejuice used flashing neon lights and arrows to attract attention. What has your piece used? Style: Use sensory details to describe the piece and make the piece “vivid” to your audience. Do not assume the audience has seen this particular piece before reading your analysis.
