Madeira International Airport in Portugal is a major civil engineering project. The airport's runway has undergone several remodels and expansions since 1964 to accommodate growing passenger traffic. Most notably, in 2000 the runway was expanded over the sea supported by 180 columns up to 70 meters tall, reaching a length of 2781 meters. This innovative engineering feat was designed by Portuguese engineer Seguedães Tavares and received international recognition, winning the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2004.

Cleaning Art Objects By Laser

1. The Shizimen Bridge in Zhuhai, China won 1st prize in an international design competition to provide access across the Shizimen canal to the new Shizimen central business district scheduled for completion in 2014.
2. The design uses a single, continuous undulating ribbon of steel to form sculptural arches that provide cable stay support for the three lanes of traffic and pedestrian/cycle paths on either side of the 300 meter wide opening.
3. Both pedestrian and cycle paths are at a lower level than the vehicular traffic to provide open views from the bridge while creating a sound barrier between paths and road traffic.
Gotthard base tunnel
The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the world's longest rail tunnel at 151.84 km in total length. It connects the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Uri through the Alps. The tunnel was constructed between 1993 and 2016 to increase rail capacity, reduce pollution from trucks, and decrease travel times through the Alps. Four tunnel boring machines were used to excavate 85.529 km of the tunnel, with the remaining 66.311 km excavated using conventional blasting techniques. When completed in 2016, the tunnel was expected to accommodate 200-250 trains per day at costs of CHF 9.74 billion.

- 1. MADEIRA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Engineering is an extremely wide science, covering a series of branches. Among those, there’s civil engineering, which directs its aim towards the project and the construction of public and private structures, such as roads, bridges, buildings, dams, etc. In Portugal, one of the great constructions in the field of Civil Engineering is Madeira International Airport, also known as Funchal Airport. It was successfully opened on the 18th of July, 1964 but its initially 1600m long runway has suffered some remodels throughout the years. The first one took place in 1973 due to the growing flow of tourists arriving in Madeira, having been built a new terminal, capable of holding 500 .000 passengers each year. Between 1982 and 1986, the runway was successfully extended to a total of 1800m and also four gates were opened. However, the ultimate remodel, the one that makes Madeira International Airport so fascinating Civil Engineering wise, happened on the 15th of September of the year 2000. This was a project designed by the Portuguese Engineer Seguedães Tavares, consisting on the expansion of the airport’s runway over the sea, reaching the 2781m of length, supported by 180 columns, each about 70m tall. This piece of work is acknowledged worldwide and it has been awarded an IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2004 by the International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineers (IABSE), putting Portugal on the map as far as Civil Engineering is concerned and making Seguedães Tavares the first Portuguese to win the equivalent to an Engineering Nobel Prize.
