The Illusion of Strong Signal
Strength!
7
• Co-Channel Interference
• No One is Working in the Hallways
• AP Should NOT Be in Line of Sight to Each Other
• One of the Greatest Barriers is the bathroom
Negatives of Hallway Wi-Fi
Why Hallway Deployments are Bad
Problems can be Endless!
8
• Low Signal Noise Ratio
• Major Coverage Holes Where Wi-Fi is Needed
• Not Designed for Capacity
• Poor Roaming Decisions
• Lots of Omni Directional APs in the Hallway

Why Hallway Deployments are Bad
APs Deployed in Hallways APs Deployed in Rooms
• Significant coverage problems
• Significant self-interference at
APs (impacts upstream traffic)
• Strong coverage in rooms
where devices are used
• Minimal self-interference

Providing Wi-Fi Coverage Where it Matters!
Proper Wi-Fi Deployment
12
Place the AP as close to client
devices as possible
• Minimize obstructions between AP
and clients
• Facilitate client device’s ability to
talk back to the access point
Place neighboring APs so that
they’re NOT in line of sight of
each other
• Minimize co-channel interference
with other APs on the network
• Maximize channel re-use
Moving Wi-Fi into the Rooms
13
General Guidelines & Best Practices
Practices
• Stagger APs horizontally and vertically
– Avoid hallways
– Do not stack floor to floor
• Space out APs evenly
– Allows for static and uniform transmit power
settings
– Simplifies channelization process
• Use building structure (e.g. walls, corners)
to isolate neighboring APs
• Avoid mounting behind obstructions (e.g.
above ceilings, near ductwork/pipes, etc.)
• Follow good wiring and mounting practices

Editor's Notes

  1. Thank you for joining us today! We’re very excited to have you on today’s webinar. Gabriel and myself will be presenting today and here to answer any of your questions. (RECORD) I’m very excited to talk about Wi-Fi in the hospitality market. EnGenius has 1,000’s of devices deployed into the hospitality space and we have help 1000’s of SI’s integrators either fix and install wi-fi networks. Let’s get started. What we will cover: What we see in the Hospitality Market What problems we see in the Hospitality Market Our Experiences with Bad WLAN Design in the Hospitality Market Our Best Practices for the Hospitality Market Our Recommended Solutions for the Hospitality Market
  2. 2018 Lodging Technology Study. Hospitality Technology “Tech Spending Increase as Hotels Eye Data & Digital to Empower Guests”. HT compiled data representative of 64,409 properties, across a variety of topic from budgets to top challenges, investment plans & technology goals. 1/3 of the respondents were recognized as technology innovators. 2018 Lodging Technology Study indicate that hoteliers continue to struggle with insufficient IT budgets and feel burdened by pressures of maintaining legacy infrastructure. Adding to difficulties of hotels staying on pace with innovation, is the inability to justify ROI on the latest tech advancements. Extra Note: Hotels that want to gain competitive edge are prioritizing empowering the guest, offering services that allows each individual the experience he or she wants. Technology will play a vital role in this and will require a faster pace of investment and a willingness to do things in different ways. This may require some periods of discomfort as new norms are established.
  3. Stats pulled from Lodging Technology Study and our experience of installing 1000’s of hotel Wi-Fi networks. I believe everyone already knows that Wi-Fi is a critical piece to their success within the hospitality business. 38% or hotel owners/IT staff will be specifically updating their guest Wi-Fi AND 46% will be making some changes to guest Wi-Fi. 3-5 devices are being used per person OR 6-10 devices are being used per a room. The Wi-Fi network plays a critical role to the overall network to guest, BUT also to the IoT devices within the hotel and staff members so that the hotel can function and provide services to the guest.
  4. The demand for Wi-Fi is there, but hoteliers are still slow to implement Wi-Fi or should I say good Wi-Fi.
  5. We still see this happening! So it’s hard to believe that people are complaining about wi-fi in these types of deployments. “No in-room WiFi?!?” “This is the hotel that will have me checking my future reservations with a fine-toothed comb. There was a cable for in room internet and wi fi access in "public areas" of the hotel, but I guess I was naive to think "in this day and age" that a reputable chain hotel would have wireless, high speed internet access in all their rooms.” “If that's not bad enough, they charged us $32 a day to have Wi-Fi” February 11, 2017
  6. When we see full strength we think good Wi-Fi, but that’s not necessarily true. Hotels (no mistake to the owner/manager) just wanted to add Wi-Fi to say they had Wi-Fi. Integrators would put wireless access points in hallways and they would walk the property with their laptops and see great signal strength. We actually need to take the Wi-Fi out of the corridors! AP’s placed in hotel hallways is a part of the problem for problematic (can work) Wi-Fi. Specifically when the applications being used on Wi-Fi is way more demanding. Guest are using devices that Now that we have demand for good Wi-Fi.
  7. Avoid Negative Reviews Online. Create a better experience for the customer. Reference December 19, 2016 by Rowell
  8. David Riches provided the pic in the middle
  9. You can see on the right when you place the AP’s in the room coverage area is where you need….where the wireless client devices is located.
  10. You want to have more than just full strength, you provide good reliable Wi-Fi to your guest. Quote from 2018 Lodging Technology Study: "Hotels that want to gain competitive edge are prioritizing empowering the guest, offering services that allows each individual the experience he or she wants. Technology will play a vital role in this and will require a faster pace of investment and a willingness to do things in different ways. This may require some periods of discomfort as new norms are established.”
  11. You want to be sure to implement wireless where it’s most needed. You have to ask why you are deploying Wi-Fi. Budget is always an issue, but if your customers are not happy then you wasted your time and money. It will end up costing you more.
  12. Remember 3 devices average per person and 6 devices per a room.
  13. General Practice. Note: you will need to install different types of access points based on the usage and client devices.
  14. Know how your access points provide signal and what is the outcome dependent on mounting. – Ceiling Mount
  15. Wall Mount
  16. Client access for outdoor applications pools, parking lots, parking structures, camping sites, RV parks, and marinas … AP no higher then 20ft.
  17. Pick the right hardware for the job. This is what our System Integrators are deploying in hospitality.
  18. Consider Common areas like small lobbies, seating areas, small eating areas, small conference rooms, or small business centers.
  19. Consider High Capacity or User areas like bars, restaurants, large/busy lobbies, large busy walk ways (Las Vegas), training rooms, casinos, large conference rooms, convention areas.
  20. For High Capacity or Common Areas we have two great solutions that we offer for these applications. These are the most popular. EWS360AP is the most used ceiling mount access point in the industry. NOTE: Mesh is supported on the EWS360AP.
  21. Remember 3 devices per user and 6 devices per room. This is not counting the IoT you have going on in that room or other devices that need to connect, either wireless or wired.
  22. 3-6 devices per room PLUS all the other connected devices you want to make you have coverage. Deploy for In-Room Wi-Fi the EWS550AP is by all means the most popular solution. NOTE: Mesh is supported. Street Price will be $149 Project Based SKU Ruckus Wireless H510 cost $395 One-Time $150 License Fee $30 Technical Support & Firmware Private Cloud License $95 per Year Cisco Meraki MR30H cost $599 $150 Annual Fee Lose Access to AP if Not Paid Public Cloud Solution Only Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-IW cost $99 11AC (Wave 1) 2 GigE Ports Wave 2 Not Available 11AC Wave 2 (2.4 & 5 GHz) 1300AC Autonomous or Centrally Managed Mode 21dBm/20dBm transmit power to provide more coverage and better penetration 2X2:2 Internal Omni-Directional Antennas to provide 360 coverage 3 x 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switched Ports (client ports) 1 (PSE) 802.3af PoE to power up VoIP Phone IEEE 802.3af/at Compliant PoE+ for placement anywhere Secured Guest Network to keep your private network safe 16 SSID’s to segment the wireless signal Bandwidth Shaping to control traffic flow per SSID SSID-to-VLAN Tagging to separate & keep the traffic secure
  23. 26% of the hoteliers that were apart of the Lodging Technology Study were enhancing guest room technology. 3 to 6 client devices per room and enhanced tech in the rooms you will need the EWS550AP. The wall plate is a wave 2 access point, that is powered by a PoE switch and provides connectivity and/or power to a multiple of devices.
  24. Consider outdoor high capacity or moderate applications like indoor & outdoor pool areas, parking structures, parking lots, golf courses, outdoor family centers, tennis courts, court yards.
  25. Make sure you deploy for high-capacity or moderate capacity. We have two outdoor solutions that we offer for these applications. These are the most popular and the ENS620EXT is becoming one of our most popular devices. Parking Structures Parking Lots Pool Areas Tennis Courts Golf Courses Indoor Pools
  26. EnGenius has line of switches that can be placed in IDF’s (Intermediate Distribution Frame) or MDF’s (Main Distribution Frame) to connect floors vertically, horizontally or to different buildings.
  27. Avoid network congestion at busy times, improve productivity of employees, & shorten response times to the guest users. We have multiple PoE switching solutions, but the EWS7926EFP is becoming a popular for hospitality solutions. The EWS1200-TFP is also a popular PoE switch EWS7926EFP (EWS) EnGenius Wireless Management Solution (7) 19 inch (9) Wireless Controller (26) Number of Ports (E) 1G Copper + 10G SFP (FP) Full Power (802.3af Output for all ports) Future-Proof for Modern & Growing Businesses Implement into New or Refresh Projects Interconnect to Core Networks
  28. To enable your guest you have to enable your staff! Keeping your staff mobile AND connected is crucial. Provide Better Customer Service Enhance Safety and Security Reduce Response Times Improve Productivity
  29. The Lodging Technology Study showed 18% were going to enhance bandwidth. In fact Regan Yeldell, Senior Director at Comcast Business said, “Bandwidth is the only thing standing between you and rave reviews.” The reason I bring this up is because our Durafon Product operates on it’s own 900Mhz network. Your staff can communicate with one another a great ranges without putting any stress on your network. You alleviate the wired (no traffic) and wireless networks (no traffic or interference). 250,000 sq ft of indoor coverage 12 floors of penetration 3,000 acres of outdoor area Durability Handset to Handset communication Take, Receive & Transfer Calls Take customer calls Call for bellhop or valet Check with housekeeping Assist guests at pool or spa Coordinate restaurant seating Contact meeting and conference manager Call Security or Emergency Services Radio Maintenance Direct personnel for deliveries
