OBJECTIVES: 
A. READING SKILL 
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 
- identify the main idea and supporting details of a text 
- scan and skim the texts to find specific information 
- guess unknown words in a text through the use of contextual clues and 
decoding strategies 
- identify referents 
- recognize contextual references in a text 
- make inferences 
- evaluate and discuss the main ideas in a text 
- distinguish facts and opinions in a text 
- think critically in response to a text 
- understand a wide range of content words and idiomatic expressions in a text 
B. WRITING SKILL 
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 
- use linkers, transitions, and parallel structures appropriately 
- develop an understanding of the sentence and paragraph 
- understand and use the key concepts of paragraph writing such as topic 
sentence, supporting sentences, concluding sentence, unity and coherence
- describe places, people, things and events 
- state their opinions about given situations, pictures, articles 
C. LISTENING SKILL 
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 
- identify main ideas

- take notes 
D. SPEAKING SKILL 
At the end of the course, students will be able to: 
- express their opinions about given topics 
- participate in conversations and group discussions 
REFERENCES: 
New English File (Upper-Intermediate) Supplementary materials will also be provided 
when required. 
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: 
Lecture; question and answer; class/group discussions; communicative/meaningful 
language exercises; in-and-out-of-class reading and writing tasks. 
LENGTH AND PERIOD:
3 hours per week; 15 weeks and 45 hours in total 
ATTENDANCE: 
Students are required to attend classes and examinations. Minimum required 
attendance is 70% for class sessions per semester, which makes up hours of absence 
at most. A student who does not fulfill the requirements for attendance is not allowed to 
take the final exam for the semester concerned and is to repeat the course. Students 
who miss an exam will not be given a make-up exam unless they submit an approved 
medical report or any other official document proving their excuse. 
CODE OF ACADEMIC CONDUCT: 
Cheating during exams or presenting someone else’s work as yours (plagiarism) will not 
be tolerated under any circumstances. Disciplinary action will be taken against any 
student who violates the code of academic conduct.

    ATTENDANCE: Students arerequired to attend classes and examinations. Minimum required attendance is 70% for class sessions per semester, which makes up hours of absence at most. A student who does not fulfill the requirements for attendance is not allowed to take the final exam for the semester concerned and is to repeat the course. Students who miss an exam will not be given a make-up exam unless they submit an approved medical report or any other official document proving their excuse. CODE OF ACADEMIC CONDUCT: Cheating during exams or presenting someone else’s work as yours (plagiarism) will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Disciplinary action will be taken against any student who violates the code of academic conduct.
