People love to watch movies and this is why a lot of movies had been
produced in the past years. Movies have become a form of entertainment for people
and because of this many film industries slowly evolve throughout the whole wide
world. Thus, movies have become so popular that people occasionally talk about
the recent movies that they watched, how good it was and how they anticipate for
the following movies. A movie genre is a category of movies that are made with a
similar style or similar subject. Movies can be in a number of genres such as comedy,
action, adventure, horror, musical based, romance and more. So, what is a musical
film? A musical film is a film genre in which songs are sung by the characters into
narrative, usually accompanied by dancing. Two musical films that I have chosen to
compare are Frozen and Tangled, both produced by The Walt Disney Studio. These
two films can be compared by their production studios, character as well as the
moral of the stories.
Frozen was directed and written by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. It features
the voices of Kristen Bell as Anna and Idina Menzel as her older sister, Elsa the
Snow Queen. The movie, Frozen, is about an optimist princess, Anna who sets of on
a dangerous journey to bring back her sister, the Snow Queen Elsa who possesses
the magic power to turn things into ice. The story sets place at the kingdom of
Arendelle. Elsa who has the incredible power, loses control of her powers freezing
Arendelle. Later, Elsa fled to the mountain and Anna, her younger sister decided to
save the kingdom by bringing back Elsa. By accident, Anna was hit in the heart by
Elsa’s power, and only true love can save her. On the other hand, Tangled, originally
titled Rapunzel, was directed by Howard and Nathan Greno, starring Mandy Moore
and Zachary Levi. The story is about a lost princess with long magical hair,
Rapunzel, who yearns to leave her secluded tower after being held up by Mother
Gothel, her stepmother. On one occasion, a thief named Eugene broke into the
tower and met Rapunzel. They went on an adventure and in the end Rapunzel finally
got back to her real family.
Both movie, Frozen and Tangled , were produced by the Walt Disney
Animation Studio. These two movies are animated and as a means to retell classic
“Fairy tale” stories. Besides, both of the movies share the same animation style
especially for their female animated characters: big eyes, thin lips and small nose.
These features can be seen on Anna, Elsa and Rapunzel. The settings involved are
mostly similar , which is a kingdom and the jungle setting. Frozen and Tangled both
employed unique artistic style by blending together feature of both computer-generated
imagery and traditional hand-drawn animation.
Another similarity of Tangled and Frozen will from the aspect of characters.
Apart from physical appearance, both protagonists in the movies show similar
personalities. In Frozen, the movie’s main protagonist is Anna, she is a daring
person and act before she thinks. In the movie, during her sister’s coronation
ceremony, Anna met Prince Hans and she wanted to marry to him despite knowing
him for merely a day. In order to save her sister Elsa who ran away after freezing
Arandelle, Anna went on the journey by herself without thinking of the consequences
that she would face. She even pass the power to control Arandelle to Prince Hans
whom she has just met without knowing the bad intention of him. Similar to Anna,
Tangled’s main protagonist, Rapunzel also portrays daring personalities. Rapunzel
was held up in the tower by her stepmother, Mother Gothel for eighteen years. On
one occasion, Rapunzel mentioned that she wanted to leave the tower to see the
lights in the sky but the idea was rejected by Mother Gothel. When Eugene the thief
broke into the tower, Rapunzel requested him to bring her to see the lights in the sky.
Without thinking of the consequences, Rapunzel escaped from the tower together
with Eugene. Anna and Rapunzel are cheerful people. Both of them enjoy doing
things like speaking to paintings on the walls or animal and running throughout the
castle or tower due to having no one to communicate with.
Furthermore, both movies give great impact to the audience. Love takes time
and is built upon sacrifice and caring is shown in both movies. In Frozen, many
characters have portrayed the moral value of that. For example, when Anna was at
the brink of death, Olaf the snowman went to rescue by starting a fire to keep her
warm. Anna tells Olaf to leave, not wanting Olaf to melt because of the fire. Olaf
didn’t want to abandon his friends by telling Anna that love is putting someone eles
before yourself. Besides that, Kristoff put himself through danger to help Anna to
find Elsa and finding ways to save Anna from dying because he really loves her. On
the other hand, in Rapunzel, Eugene was willingly to sacrifice himself to rescue
Rapunzel even though he knew that he will die. From these events in both movies,
they show that love takes time and is built upon sacrifice and caring.
To conclude with, I have compared the similarities between the movies
Frozen and Tangled from the aspect of production , characters as well as moral
value of the stories. I think that Disney’s movies have given a lot of impact and
entertainment to us. After doing research on the two movies, I have learned that we
should never lose their dreams. We should work hard and strike for our dream just
like Anna and Rapunzel.
