Movie genre is a term used to categorize different types of movies, based on
the similarities in the narrative elements from which movies are constructed.
Animated film is one of the most popular genres in today's generation. It is an art
that brings fantasy to life, produced by a collection of illustrations that are
photographed one-by-one then played in a quick succession. Being an imaginative
and creative genre, animated films are enjoyed by all ages. The movies I have chosen
are Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Sleeping Beauty (1959), both
produced by Walt Disney. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a story revolves
around a beautiful princess who lived with seven dwarfs to hide herself from the
wicked queen. However, she still fell into the queen’s trick and entered a deathlike
sleep. Meanwhile, Sleeping Beauty is about a princess who was cursed by an evil
witch, Maleficient to die on her sixteenth birthday. She was brought away from the
palace and protected by the fairies, and fell into an ageless sleep which was ended
with a kiss from a prince. These two movies were my childhood favorite, after re-
watching them when I turned eighteen; I found that there are some similarities
between them such as the motive of the villains, cottage in the woods, non-human
h e l p e r s a n d t h e e n d i n g o f t h e s t o r y .
Firstly, both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, Aurora were harmed by a
jealous villain. Snow White's stepmother, the evil queen wanted to kill her out of
enviousness. She was furious when her magic mirror which always told her she was
the fairest woman in the world said that Snow White was a thousand times more
beautiful than her. The queen first sent a huntsman to kill Snow White, then disguised
herself as an old stooped hag to trick her to eat a poisoned apple. Meanwhile in
Sleeping Beauty, Maleficient who was not invited to the celebration as the other
fairies cursed Aurora to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die on her sixteenth
birthday. At the end, both villains succeeded briefly to make the princesses fell into a
deathlike sleep by using their evil magic spell as they were later defeated; the queen
in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was killed as she fell to her death amidst
lighting and thunder bolts, while Maleficient in Sleeping Beauty was slayed by the
prince with one thrust when she was in dragon form.
The next similarity I found among these two movies is both princesses
were saved by a kiss from a charming prince they had met once before. Before Snow
White ran into the jungle, Prince Ferdinand was mesmerized by her angelic voice and
they fell in love upon meeting each other. At the end of the movie, Prince Ferdinand
heard the heartbroken dwarfs' crying and grieving. He saw Snow White, the ragged
maiden he fancied at the castle lying in a bier full of flowers. Not knowing that a true
love kiss can wake her up, Prince Ferdinand kissed her cold red lips gently for farewell,
and that kiss saved Snow White from her death. In Sleeping Beauty, Aurora met
Prince Phillip in the woods when she went out to pick some berries for the fairies.
They sang and dance, both felt the sparks of love at first sight. However, Aurora soon
fainted into a sleeping death after touching a spinning wheel as the curse. Prince
Phillip was kidnapped by Maleficient right after that as he was the one who was able
to break the spell. Nevertheless, with the help of the three kind fairies, Prince Phillip
navigated a brutal path to save his true love, Aurora. He escaped from the tower,
killed the dragon transformed from Maleficient and rescued Aurora with a kiss on her
lips.
Next, both Snow White and Aurora took refuge in a cottage in the woods
at one point of their lives. Snow White found a lovely cottage which belonged to the
dwarfs and hid herself there from her stepmother. She cleaned the house, made the
beds and cooked for the dwarfs while living there. At the other side, Aurora was taken
to a cottage in order to run away from Maleficient. She was raised in the deep forest
by the fairies without magic until the age of sixteen. While staying there, Aurora did
house chores and pluck berries for them. In short, both princesses did work for
people they stayed with in the cottage.
The last similarity I found between the films is both princesses are helped
by non-human helpers. For example, Snow White was helped by the seven dwarfs
and Aurora was helped by the three kind fairies- Flora, Fauna and Merryweather.
Besides, they had woodland features which made them able to communicate with
animals and connect to nature. The dwarfs not only allowed Snow White to stay with
them, they even chased and killed the evil queen together with the ever-helpful
animals after Snow White fell into her trick and poisoned by her. In Sleeping Beauty,
the fairies bestowed gifts on Aurora when she was just born- Flora gave her beauty,
Fauna gave her the gift of song and Merryweather tried to repair the curse bestowed
by Maleficient. Instead of dying, Aurora would fell into a long deep sleep and the
spell would be broken with the first true love's kiss to her. Other than that, the fairies
took very good care of her, treating her like their own daughter and even cried when
Aurora grew up, knowing that she was going back to the palace, where she belonged
to.
In a nutshell, although the two stories are different, both movies show a lot
of similarities. Both princesses, Snow White and Aurora while similar in their
upbringings found happiness and love in unexpected ways. They both met their
significant others in humble surroundings. Also, both women did not complain about
the way they were raised, as they made the best out of their situations.
