Energy Saving Solutions www.powertech-solar.com
Company Background www.powertech-solar.com After many years of intensive research & development, (much carried out in Cyprus) we are in a unique position to provide affordable solutions to the global problems of depleting energy and water supplies. We aim to inform people of the wide range of micro-renewables available that can be installed into new and existing homes to reduce energy or water consumption. These include: Solar Thermal Collectors Air Source Heat Pumps Hybrid Photovoltaic / Micro-Wind Systems Underfloor Heating Systems Rainwater Harvesting Systems
Why Solar Thermal? www.powertech-solar.com Around 20% of CO 2 Emissions are Produced Domestically – Solar Thermal Collectors Can Help to Counteract this Will provide 60% of Annual Domestic Hot Water Can be integrated with Air Source Heat Pumps through a thermal store to provide most of Domestic Hot Water Requirements Systems such as the Apricus Evacuated Tube Solar Collector are Modular – therefore parts can be easily replaced 25-30 Year Expected Life Increased desirability of property due to the Fuel Bill Savings and Property Energy Rating it Offers the Purchaser
Solar Thermal Collectors www.powertech-solar.com A Solar Hot Water System (Solar Thermal Collectors) can be one of two types: Flat Plate Evacuated Tube Flat Plate Collectors These are installed in the UK, however, they are more effective in hotter climates. Evacuated Tube Collectors Because they can passively track the Sun they are better suited to the Northern Hemisphere as they can capture incoming radiation at more oblique angles.
How Is Solar Thermal Installed? www.powertech-solar.com New Builds With a Multi Fuel Thermal Store. For greater domestic hot water production it can be integrated with an Air Source Heat Pump. Will also supply warm water underfloor heating (see next slide) With Twin Coil Cylinder to achieve an industry standard system Retrofit Either of the above With a Thermix Valve which allows a solar thermal collector to be installed with minimum disruption With a Combi Conversion Kit – the system by-passes combi when solar gain is high and acts as a preheat when solar gain is low The Powertech Apricus Solar Thermal Collector can be installed in a number of ways – either in vented or pressurised systems:

The Apricus Solar Collector www.powertech-solar.com To follow is an overview of the Apricus product…
AP Solar Collector
Background AP Solar Collector is a British/Australian joint design, manufactured in Nanjing, China under Australian management. Apricus is a worldwide registered trademark. Apricus is latin for “attracting the sun”. Currently exported to Europe, USA, Canada, the Middle East, Mexico, New Zealand & South Africa , Australia and many other countries. Evacuated tube technology is taking over flat plate market share in most thermal solar markets.
Quality Certifications European quality and performance certification by SPF Switzerland (EN 12975-2: 2001, Section 5) SRCC certification – entire USA FSEC certification – Florida, CA, USA. Australian Standard AS2712 – (Cert No.20405)
Collector Design Key design aims: Easy to install (plug in) High efficiency – long term performance Light-weight Easy to transport Attractive design Reliability and long life Significant advantages over flat plate Flexible use – domestic, commercial Installation on almost any wall or roof surface Installer friendly frame design

Evacuated Tubes Borosilicate Glass (3.3) Glass-glass seal (not metal to glass) Selective absorber coating (sputtered) Thermal absorption of 92% Excellent thermal insulation = performance Passively track sun throughout the day Silver (barium getter) vacuum indicator Strong (excellent hail resistance) Long lasting performance Inexpensive and easy to replace if damaged
Heat Pipes Made from air-conditioner grade copper (0 2 free) Startup temp of ~30 o C Heat transfer thousands of times that of silver Reliable - long life of 30+ years (8hours/day) Individually performance tested Freeze safe (controlled freezing)
Header (Heat Exchanger) Ag/Zn/Cu brazed potable grade copper Contoured design for turbulent water flow Heat pipe ports brazed to contoured pipes Guaranteed tight metal-metal contact Excellent corrosion resistance Minimal pressure drop Small water volume
Manifold Design Light, corrosion resistant, aluminium casing 50mm thick glass wool insulation Silicone rubber seals (UV stabilised) Lightweight Attractive finish
Frame Design 1.5mm 304-2B stainless steel Rated to 180km/h winds Pre-assembled Nut-locks Can slide left to right to match roof Suits flat, low-pitched and pitched roofs Silicone rubber pads for corrugated iron roofs Roof attached straps for tiled roof Rubbber pads for corrugated iron or asphalt roofs Silicone rubber seals (UV stabilised) Convenient tube attachment clips
Frame Design
Efficiency 3 main variables Insolation/Radiation Level: G = 800 Watts/m 2 Ambient Temp: Ta Collector Temp: Tm Performance drops with increased temp differential: Tm>Ta Performance drops more quickly with low insolation levels
Efficiency Curve CLOSE
Passive Tracking Tubes always facing sun (passive tracking) Peak conversion at 40 o – no gaps & no shading Flat plates only peak at midday Minimal effect if not due North

System Design Installation in many countries – many formats Domestic and commercial use Suitable for open or closed Loop (glycol-water) Can be configured for drain-back (end ports) Suitable for mains pressure (<800kPa) Suitable for potable water Needs only slow water circulation (0.1L/tube/min) Not suitable for chlorinated water (pool/spa) in open flow format
Standard Frame For suitably pitched roofs, the standard frame can be used. What is a suitable pitch? Equal or greater than latitude No less than 20 o Equal to or greater than 40 o in areas with very large hail Able to be used on tiled , asphalt or corrugated iron roof s .
Standard Frame
Flat Roof Frame For flat surfaces the flat roof frame is used. The feet can be round, or C channel style.
Flat Roof Frame
Low Pitched Roof Frame For a roof with insufficient pitch, a low pitched roof frame is used. Attaches to the roof the same as the standard frame – can be used on tiled or corrugated iron roof. Requires cutting of legs and rear-x brace if adjusting angle. Angle range of 10-30 o on top of the roof pitch.
Low Pitched Roof Frame
Different Mounting Options Frame can be mounted on a wall. Can be reversed to raise bottom of collector up. Frame can be cut and new holes drilled as required.

Commercial Applications Ideal for Commercial heating applications Caravan parks, Hotels, Schools (public showers/kitchen) Restaurants (dish washing) Industrial heating (supplement gas heating) Absorption/Adsorption Chilling Max of 5 x AP-30 per bank, unlimited banks running in parallel. Can run all in parallel with feed and return lines.
