 Matter is anything that has mass and takes
up space .
 Energy is the ability to do work.
 There are producers and consumers!!!.
 Producers make their own food.
 Consumers eat other organisms
 Law of conservation of energy states that energy
cant be created or destroyed.
 Law of conservation of mass states that mass
cant be created or destroyed , matter moves
through the environment different forms.
 Matter and energy can leave an ecosystem when
organisms move.
 Example : some birds feed on fish in ocean.
 Matter can leave an ecosystem by moving water
and air.
 Even when matter and energy leave or enter an
ecosystem they are never destroyed!!!
 Energy pyramid is a tool that can be used to
trace the flow of energy through an ecosystem.
 The pyramids shape shows that there is less
energy and fewer organisms at each level.
 Fewer organisms can be supported at higher
levels
 The bottom levels are the producers has the
largest population & most energy.
 The other levels are the consumers
 Open system when matter enter and leave
an ecosystem
 The role of decomposers in cycling matter is
to break down wastes and dead organisms ,
returning matter to the environment.
 There are three ways that water can enter
the atmosphere : evaporation , , transpiration
,, respiration.
 Evaporation : when the sun heat causes
water to change from liquid to vapor
 Transpiration : when plants release water
vapor from their leaves
 Respiration : when organisms release water
as wastes
 In condensation the water cools and return
to liquid
 In precipitation when the water falls from the
atmosphere to the land and ocean
 In runoff the precipitation falls on land and
flows into streams and rivers
 Groundwater is the water stored
underground water in spaces between or
within the rocks
 Rain , snow , sleet , and hail are forms of
precipitation
 Most precipitation falls into the ocean
 Groundwater will slowly flow back into the
soil , streams , rivers , and oceans

 Energy Matter
1)How might energy and matter leave the
ecosystem?????
2)How do organisms get energy and
matter???
3)What is the role of decomposers in cycling
matter
4)How does energy move through an
ecosystem???
5)How does water from the atmosphere return
to earths surface??
6)What happens through precipitation??
7)What would happen to the ecosystem if there were
no nitrogen fixation bacteria???
8)What happens through nitrogen cycle???
9)Define combustion
10)Tell what happens during cellular respiration?
11)Define open system
12)Define energy pyramid
13)what happens to energy and matter in
ecosystem??
14)Define the law of conservation of mass??
