Summary / Conclusions:
• Child mortality and family planning are both (fairly) frequently cited as ‘top picks’ in global prioritisation.
• This is prima facie curious, since the most-obvious effect of the second intervention is precisely to undo the most-obvious effect of the first.
• Benefit-cost analyses (indeed) only manage to make both interventions simultaneously come out as ‘top picks’ by engaging in ‘doublethink’: making inconsistent decisions as to which effects (‘direct’ vs ‘indirect’) to count vs disregard, across the two interventions.
• Analyses of mortality-reduction projects neglect indirect (e.g. economic) effects.
• There may be a case for ignoring such effects in some
contexts (e.g. doctor-patient relationships), but not at the level of global prioritisation.
• Analyses of family planning programs ignore the (‘direct’) ‘value of lives not born’, counting only the ‘indirect’ effects on others.
• This presupposes a person-affecting and/or an average-utilitarian approach to population ethics. Those approaches are initially intuitive, but ultimately indefensible.
• There is a resulting danger that we are currently wasting billions of dollars per year, by doing and then undoing good.
• To fix this: More sophisticated analysis, including serious attempts to put neo-Malthusianism and the value of individual additional lives in dialogue with one another, is required.

Lecture 13 the changing agenda of world politics
This document discusses the changing nature and content of the international agenda. It defines an agenda as the issues currently attracting international attention. Issues can gain prominence on the agenda through both random and planned means, or a combination. Whether an issue rises on the agenda depends on factors like the number affected, its urgency and visibility to key decision makers. International agendas emerge and change as different actors like states, NGOs and individuals work to frame issues according to prevailing norms, laws, policies and levels of governance. Powerful forces can influence what is considered important, but some issues remain important to particular groups despite being off the broader agenda.
Generational equity
1) Historically, debt bondage has led to debtors and their children being condemned to perpetual slavery to repay financial debts. Some ancient laws and traditions included provisions for debt forgiveness and freeing children from slavery due to parental debt.
2) The concept of intergenerational equity proposes that endowed institutions should spend investment gains equally between current and future beneficiaries, preserving resources for future generations. For example, unsustainable logging could deprive future generations of forest resources.
3) Debates around national debt and intergenerational equity consider whether current deficit spending and debt accumulation provides benefits to the present generation at the expense of increased costs and risks imposed on future generations through higher taxes or reduced government services.

The US has carried debt since the Revolutionary War, with amounts fluctuating over time based on wars and economic conditions. Debt increased dramatically due to the Civil War and World Wars, reaching $1 trillion in 1982 and surpassing $5 trillion in 2000. The national debt has risen due to factors like military spending, recessions reducing tax revenue, and social programs increasing spending. A high debt level relative to GDP can increase interest rates, taxes, and fiscal deficits while slowing economic growth. Suggestions to recover include making American companies more competitive, restricting strategic asset sales to foreigners, and revising trade policies to better serve US interests.
Combating the Debt Addiction
Ulf Dahlsten gave a presentation at the Stockholm School of Economics on March 22nd, 2014 about combating debt addiction and stabilizing the financial system. He argued that more needs to be done as the system has issues like extreme pro-cyclicality, underestimating endogenous risks, excessive money creation, growing private debts, asset inflation, and complexity. He focused on these problems and asked questions about addressing excessive money creation, the danger of private debt buildup, curbing asset inflation without hurting the economy, and what central banks, regulators, and politicians can do to help.

The Global Economic Outlook: What's Next?
Here in mid-2012, the global economy continues to expand but also to face significant risks. In Europe, the financial crisis of many banks and sovereigns has worsened in recent months. In the United States, growth in employment and output remain slow—and several difficult fiscal choices await the end of the year. Many BRIC-and-beyond countries continue to grow fast—but in China and India, most notably, growth has slowed the past year. This inaugural “Breakfast with Matt” will examine some of the main factors in the global economic outlook.

Collapse of Western excess is creating a crisis for developing countries caught in the tailwind. 2.8 billion survive on less than two dollars a day. After significant gains in the last decade, which saw GDP growing across Africa at an average of 5%, latest figures indicate this is dropped to less than 3%. The solutions are complex, will be incremental, and require action at both macro (intergovernmental) and micro-levels (individuals and NGOs assisting economic development on the ground). There is no silver bullet, but only realistic and committed action at all levels.

Following the analys of Thanos Dokos in ELIAMEP, if Greece fails to recover, it may well be forced to leave the Eurozone with a huge economic and political impact for the Euro and the EU. He argues there will be severe repercussions for regional stability in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the EU‘s and NATO‘s ability to play a substantial role in those regions.
Allowing Greece to become a weak or even a semi-failed state will have an impact well beyond its immediate borders. On many issues, the ability of Greece to make a positive contribution should no longer be taken for granted.
