End-of-Life Care and Social Work Practice The death of an elderly individual may occur in a variety of settings and circumstances. For example, an individual may die painlessly at home surrounded by the support of many loved ones, or an individual may suffer severe pain for months before dying in a health facility with little social support. In addition, it is possible that many health and helping professionals may interact with the dying person and his or her family. For this Assignment, you consider a social worker's role in end-of-life care. In addition to reading this week's resources, conduct your own research and obtain at least one additional journal article that addresses how a social worker might support clients as they plan end-of-life care. Submit by Day July 8, 2017 a 2- to 4-page paper that analyzes the role of the social worker in helping to plan end-of-life care. As a group, LGBT older adults experience unique economic and health disparities. LGBT older adults may disproportionately be affected by poverty and physical and mental health conditions due to a lifetime of unique stressors associated with being a minority and may be more vulnerable to neglect and mistreatment in aging care facilities (American, 2019). In the case of Francine (Plummer, 2014) she is a 70-year-old Catholic woman, who personally identifies as a lesbian. She never felt comfortable actually “coming out” due to the environment she grew up in. Both in the era, she grew up in and the strict Catholic belief she was raised in is against homosexual nature she felt it wasn’t appropriate to discuss. As she got older and experienced the loss of her partner, she felt those who cared about her felt she should not mourn her loss so hard. It could have been due to her never admitting who her partner really was, or the common mindset of those around her. It could affect how she viewed her life and what she should do as an older adult in her sexual life.
Environmental factors influence the aging process. Being physically and mentally active tends to slow down the aging process. Inactivity speeds it up. A positive outlook (positive thinking) tends to slow down the aging process. Insecurity, the lack of someone to talk to, negative thinking, and being in a strange environment tend to accelerate the aging process (Zastrow, 2016). In Francine’s case, the loss of her loved one and retirement has affected her outlook. She feels sad and isolated, it has taken its toll and that can progress the effects of ages. Once she gained a support system she was able to increase her activity and her mental stability changed.
As a worker, I would use the understanding that environmental factors and personal views can affect a client and manifest as an aging process. I would help Francine by using cognitive reasoning to help her accept her life and make changes that make her happy. While morning her loved one is appropriate, helping herself is as well.
The notion that there is a general intellectual decline in old age is largely incorrect. Most intellectual abilities hold up well with age. While older people show a decline in performance on IQ tests, their actual intellectual competence may not be declining (Zastrow, 2016). A strategy I might use in applying my knowledge of the aging process in social work practice.

The types of issues and concerns that children, and adolescents, present to social workers are as varied as the people themselves. Understanding how individuals behave in their particular environment will shed some light on their current challenges, but this alone is not enough. Social psychologists have studied affiliation and interpersonal attraction, mate selection, and relationship satisfaction. Not surprisingly, research indicates that males and females think differently about relationships. Some of these differences include comfort with relationship intimacy and physical contact, perceptions of attractiveness, reasons for mate selection, and the role of emotion within relationships (Crisp & Turner, 2010).
For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources and research two articles related to either gender and affiliation or gender and attraction. Consider how gender may relate to affiliation and attraction and whether or not you agree with the articles you selected.

The types of issues and concerns that children, and adolescents, present to social workers are as varied as the people themselves. Understanding how individuals behave in their particular environment will shed some light on their current challenges, but this alone is not enough. Social workers must know how to ask the right questions, as the answers will inform decisions about which resources may be most helpful.

Not surprisingly, research indicates that males and females think differently about relationships. Imagine how terrible it would be to plan a party and no one showed up. As a social worker, you may very well plan a group and no one attends. Why might this happen? In part, it might be due to a lack of proper planning. Prior to establishing a group, there is a great deal of planning that needs to occur. First and foremost, you need to assess the need for the group.
· Why does this group need to be provided?
· Are there enough individuals who would want this type of group?
· Is there a clear identified gap in services at the agency that shows a need for this group?
· Have you chosen a time when many clients could attend this group?
· What are the criteria for being accepted into the group?
· Is there a possible incentive that could be offered for attending the group (bus or gas fare, food, etc)?
· Do you need babysitting services so that clients with children are free to attend the group?
· Is this a task group, an educational group, and or a psychosocial group?
· Is the group open-ended or time-limited?
As you can see, there are many details a social worker needs to address, prior to starting a group. Once these details are finalized, how will you run the group and what intervention skills might you use to meet the need you identified?

Consider the needs of the population and the type of group you might build to benefit the population. Think about how you might structure this group and what role you, the social worker, might need to assume in order to support the group members. Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health” journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research.
From my understanding of the journal for this week, the social theory was how some ones health can be effected with or with out social relations. From the research it touches on how a person or people can be happy and also live longer with better health, when practicing social relationships. The article discuss how the theory of social relationships can make people stringer and healthier. It was used to support the research because the researchers conducted studies not only on humans but animals as well to prove this theory.
Choose one of the quantitative research results presented in the article; describe the evidence presented and indicate which variables of the experiment were highlighted.
The quantitative research results that I choose from the article was when the researchers were discovering that social relationships can cause a risk factors of mortality, and probably morbidity, from a wide range of diseases. From the readings the researchers shown that they used criteria include strength and consistencies of statistical association across a wide range of studies an cause and effect with animals and humans. An experiment of behavior pattern as an risk factor for (type A) heart disease. 1964 Surgeon general had evidence that social relationship and health increased that cigarette smoking was a cause or risk factor for mortality a range of disease. These factors are important because the researchers seen that there is less association of social relationships when it comes to smoking, because smoking is also linked to cancer.

Although social relationships as independent, overruling, and moderating variables affecting stress, health, or the relationships between them have been widely studied over the past decade, almost no attention has been paid to social relationships as dependent variables ( House, Landis & Umberson, 1988). I believe that modern social media sites support the claims that social variables determine both health and the nature of social relationships, both link social relationship to health. Modern social media is where you can give updates on thoughts and at one point it was some where you can express freedom of speech.

To begin with, I have set my eyes on becoming a social worker. Further, through my involvement in the realm of social work, I hope to help as many individuals as I can. Each year on or around June 15, communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day set aside to spread awareness of the abuse of the elderly (Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse & Neglect, 2013). The abuse of older adults is a growing concern and statistics suggest that the number of elders experiencing abuse is an alarmingly high number. Research suggests that close to half the people diagnosed with dementia experience some form of abuse (Cooper, C., Selwood, A., Blanchard, M., Walker, Z., Blizard, R., & Livingston, G., 2009; Wiglesworth, A., Mosqueda, L., Mulnard, R., Liao, S., Gibbs, L., & Fitzgerald, W., 2010, as cited on http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/Library/Data/index.aspx). Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. What causes people to be drawn to one another? What happens when one experiences rejection? Human beings are wired for relationships. Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. Humans engage in relationships of all kinds from family, acquaintances and friends, to romantic partners. Belonging is a basic human need (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

Baumeister and Bushman (2014) describe belonging as a human need that requires regular contact and ongoing relationships with at least four to six people. When people have no sustainable relationships or are long distances for extended periods from those they love, whether a friend, family member, or romantic partner, they become lonely and potentially depressed. Feeling lonely and ostracized is associated with aggressive and other antisocial behaviors (Baumeister & Bushman).
As social and cultural beings, humans benefit in many ways from belongingness to a group of people. Research supports that belongingness can benefit physical health as well as mental health (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Support from people with whom one has stable bonds is associated with higher resistance to disease and higher rates of healing from illness and injury.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). From my understanding of the journal for this week, the social theory was how some ones health can be effected with or with out social relations. From the research it touches on how a person or people can be happy and also live longer with better health, when practicing social relationships. The article discuss how the theory of social relationships can make people stringer and healthier. It was used to support the research because the researchers conducted studies not only on humans but animals as well to prove this theory.
Choose one of the quantitative research results presented in the article; describe the evidence presented and indicate which variables of the experiment were highlighted.
The quantitative research results that I choose from the article was when the researchers were discovering that social relationships can cause a risk factors of mortality, and probably morbidity, from a wide range of diseases. From the readings the researchers shown that they used criteria include strength and consistencies of statistical association across a wide range of studies an cause and effect with animals and humans. An experiment of behavior pattern as an risk factor for (type A) heart disease. 1964 Surgeon general had evidence that social relationship and health increased that cigarette smoking was a cause or risk factor for mortality a range of disease. These factors are important because the researchers seen that there is less association of social relationships when it comes to smoking, because smoking is also linked to cancer.

I believe that modern social media sites support the claims that social variables determine both health and the nature of social relationships, both link social relationship to health. To begin with, I have set my eyes on becoming a social worker. Further, through my involvement in the realm of social work, I hope to help as many individuals as I can. For a long a time, I have exhibited immense passion and the need to come to the assistance of individuals who are grappling with a vast array of unsavory circumstances. My passion is as a result of my experiences of the suffering of many people whom I have interacted with throughout my life. Notably, the majority of these people had to contend with abuse and neglect for a long time. Moreover, my need is as a result of my comprehension of the fact that transforming the globe commences with the assistance of a just a single individual and having the ability to empathize with individuals. Having witnessed so much suffering throughout my life, I feel that it is right for me to do whatever I can to bring smiles to faces of individuals who have faced diverse challenging situations in their life. In this way, I believe that I will be able to bring much-needed positive contributions to my preferred profession.
Further, I bring various positive and unique qualities to social work, the most prominent of which include empathy, active listening, and persuasion. Firstly, empathy relates to the capability of an individual to identify with the situation in which another individual is. Undoubtedly, empathy is immensely critical in the realm of social work owing to the fact that it aids those partaking in the field to not only comprehend but also assist others in ascertaining solutions to their problems. Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. The legendary American actor, Mickey Rooney, spoke to the United States Senate, describing his own experiences of pain and neglect at the hands of his stepson, asking legislators to take seriously the abuse of the elderly.

What causes people to be drawn to one another? What happens when one experiences rejection? Human beings are wired for relationships. Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. Humans engage in relationships of all kinds from family, acquaintances and friends, to romantic partners. Belonging is a basic human need (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

Baumeister and Bushman (2014) describe belonging as a human need that requires regular contact and ongoing relationships with at least four to six people. When people have no sustainable relationships or are long distances for extended periods from those they love, whether a friend, family member, or romantic partner, they become lonely and potentially depressed. Feeling lonely and ostracized is associated with aggressive and other antisocial behaviors (Baumeister & Bushman).
As social and cultural beings, humans benefit in many ways from belongingness to a group of people. Research supports that belongingness can benefit physical health as well as mental health (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Support from people with whom one has stable bonds is associated with higher resistance to disease and higher rates of healing from illness and injury.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). Assignment: Consider one of the topics: I choose to propose my own topic. (received teacher's approval)
Requirements: Use 1-2 in class philosophical texts (I have them in the attachment) and 3-4 academic sources (requires research) to analyze, explore, and make connections to each other. Needs to have at least one quote in each body paragraph.
My proposed topic:
In class, my teacher he talks about a scenario where people from different cultures tend to have different views and values, but people who were raised in both cultures can have an internal conflict between their cultures, causing to choose one over the other, have a mix of both (as in a hybrid form of culture), or identify themselves to another culture that lies somewhere in between, or maybe even reject both cultures.
In Nietzsche's essay "On Truth and Lying in an Extra-Moral Sense", he says "for between two absolutely different spheres such as subject and object, there can be no expression, but as most an aesthetic stance, I mean an allusive transference, a stammering translation into a completely foreign medium. For this, however, in any case a freely fictionalizing and freely inventive middle sphere and middle faculty is necessary." In connection to people who have lived in two different cultures this inventive "middle ground” and “aesthetic stance” is essential for them to embrace their own set of values and beliefs.
For the research part of the essay, I wanted to explore people who have immigrated to another country from their own home country since a young age, for their development is heavily influenced by the struggles of living in multiple cultures. (I’m one of them myself). In sociology, Ruben Rumbaut was the first to coin the term “1.5 generation immigrant”, which means the people who have arrived in another country before their adolescence. Based on the age in which they immigrated, some of these immigrants might feel a stronger connection to a particular culture where some might feel they belong right in the middle, being unable to identify themselves to either of their ethnicities. (Just providing possible examples)
Optional (If there isn’t enough topics): Also for immigrants who might choose one culture over another. It can possibly relate to another philosophical text. In Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave,” Aristotle argues that there are two mediums of knowledge that exists: the physical/sensory world(cave), where people(prisoners) are living happily in an illusion, and the intelligible world, where people can achieve a perfect form of knowledge through learning philosophy. For people, who have acquired the “perfect knowledge” of philosophy, when they go back to the sensory world, they will have a better and clearer perception of the world than those in the sensory world. They also have developed a responsibility of “quietly ruling” the people in the sensor.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
