This document discusses the interrelationship between pulpal and periodontal diseases. It begins by outlining the pathways of communication between the pulp and periodontium, such as dentinal tubules, accessory canals, and the apical foramen. It then discusses how pulpal disease can lead to periodontal disease through retrograde spread of infection, and vice versa. Etiological factors including microbial pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi as well as non-microbial factors are described. Contributing factors to endodontic lesions in the periodontium such as inadequate treatment, coronal leakage, trauma, resorptions, and developmental malformations are also summarized.
