Employment Within the
Industry
Job types within the industry
Firstly, before I researched into the job types within the industry, I had to decide which areas I enjoy the most
which are acting and writing. There are a plethora of job types that link to this which include: technical
writer, advertising, journalism, actor, broadcasting and publishing. Out of these areas, the job types I want to
do in the future are publishing (writing books or novels) or acting. I want to do these things as they are my
main passion as I have tried to improve my writing and acting skills over this course.

Technical
Writing
To become a technical writer, it is common for people
to have any of the following: a degree in engineering,
computer science or a related technical field, with
courses in communications and business writing, a four-
year degree in English or technical writing, 5-6 years of
technical writing experience, proficiency in Microsoft
Office and Adobe Suite, along with strong team
management and project management skills.
In addition, key qualities employees look for within
potential employers include being able to communicate
effectively, a good researcher, being creative, having
good teamwork and technical skill and to have
reasonably efficient time management skills.

Advertising
To become an advertiser, I would need a
relevant College Degree as most advertising
managers have bachelor's degrees in
advertising or marketing.
Moreover, the qualities that are required for
this job type include the ability to be
creative, excellent writing skills and good
management skills as these components are
the main areas that a company look for in a
potential employer.

Journalism
To become a journalist, it would be helpful to have A
university degree as it is one of the most common
qualifications for journalism. There are undergraduate
journalism degrees that teach you all the skills to become a
journalist. There's also the postgraduate route, which you can
complete after an undergraduate degree in a different subject.
These include master's degrees and postgraduate diplomas.
A foundation course is a useful way to progress onto a further
journalism degree. To enrol on a journalism degree, GCSEs and
A-Levels in English are desirable, while media-based courses
also prove beneficial.
In addition, the qualities I would need to be a full-time
journalism include good writing skills, curiosity and a hunger
for news, critical thinking and analytical skills, dedication to
accuracy, fairness, balance and media ethics, courage and
boldness to ask tough questions and report with empathy and
compassion, expert communication skills to interview sources
and write in-depth stories, knowledge of technology and data,
investigative skills to gather, assess, record and share relevant
information.

Acting
To gain a career in acting, you don’t need a drama degree. Some
people have an innate talent for acting, while others take acting
classes or a performing arts degree to hone different techniques,
styles, and modes of acting. There are no formal requirements to
start an acting career in the UK.
Qualities that would give you a good chance within the industry
includes leveraging my natural talent, honing my skills through
training or practice, putting together an acting CV and show reel,
and continuous training.

Publishing
To become a publisher, I don’t need a degree in
publishing. However, a four-year degree in English,
Communications, Creative Writing, Journalism,
Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting or
Bookkeeping can help me prepare to run a book
publishing business.
The qualities I would need to start publishing
include having an excellent grasp of spelling and
grammar, quick learning ability, adaptability,
outgoing personality, ability to juggle different
projects in varying stages of development at the
same time, written and verbal communication
skills, critical thinking skills and project
management skills.

Companies employing and the skills required
From the research I have done, I have gathered that publishing and acting are not reliable career paths in my area
therefore I have decided to look at similar employment with other areas that I am confident with. Whilst I continued my
research, I stumbled across a company employing called “Foundever” and the job sector being “Customer Support
Advisor - Phone, Chat, Email and Social Media” which although doesn’t fall under any of my main passions in the media
industry, it is a very appealing job due to the reasonable requirements, along with a good rate of pay and the fact I have a
majority of the skills they are looking for which include: being passionate about delivering a positive customer
experience and exceeding expectations using positive language, having strong reading, written and verbal
communication skills, having strong interpersonal skills, having strong analytical and problem solving skills, being
proactive, self-motivated, able to work using own initiative, is prepared to always go above and beyond Excellent
attention to detail is required, able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, ability to thrive in a challenging,
fast paced environment and develop new skills, can adapt to change in products and processes with ease and
effectiveness, ability to remain calm and focused Resilient and able to take and act on constructive feedback, strong team
player with ability to organise, coordinate and execute on details.
