Gillian recently graduated from university with a degree she did not enjoy and is unsure of her career path. She knows she wants to teach but has not been given the opportunity in her home country. An empathy map was created for Gillian to better understand her situation and feelings of lost direction, frustration at not being able to pursue teaching, and desire to explore different jobs without commitment through things like crafts, children, and creative work instead of routines. The problem statement aims to help Gillian find a satisfying career that aligns with her interests and skills.
1. Empathize and Define
Does this traditional path from education to employment make sense today
for the hundreds of millions of learners around the world?
(I) I interviewed a recent graduate who did not enjoy her major and
looking for other directions as far as work is concern. Not sure what
type of work to do and now wondering if taking a gap year would have
been better.
(II) Empathy map (see next page)
(III) Problem statement
Gillian, a very creative, intelligent, people oriented, IT-savvy and
hardworking young lady needs a way to find the career choice
Because she has graduated from a course she did not like and
although have chosen to teach, has not been given the chance to be
train as a teacher in her own country.
2. I Feel
• she has lost her direction on career
choice
• she knows what she wants but have
not been given a chance to try at it,
i.e. teaching
• she could do with some time at
other jobs without commiting to
one too soon as she is fortunate
that she does not need to work to
support herself as yet
Do
• Finding out what she really likes
• Likes to work with her hands esp
craftwork
• Likes working with children
• Like creative work
• Does not like admin or routine work
• Does not want to work in a lab
• Does not mind meeting and working
with people
Say
• self doubt
• wants to do better
• she can do good if she likes what she is
doing
• she has supportive parents who just
want her to find out what she likes to
• fortunate that she can further her
studies in an area that she likes
• wish she had quit her course after the
first year as she did not enjoy it
• she is ok and that a first degree is just a
starting point
• she is very fortunate
• would have been better to take a gap
year after A levels before university
I Think
• she would be a good teacher
• she might enjoy being a graphic
designer
• she would like to explore and try out
different areas of work before
deciding on the final career path
