Sex and Character: Building Moral IntelligenceMann Rentoy
This document provides information on building character in students. It discusses the importance of character education given societal changes that have made parenting and teaching more challenging. It outlines three institutions historically responsible for shaping character - the home, school, and religion. Specific challenges to developing good character in today's world are explored such as a lack of empathy, increase in peer cruelty, and mental health issues among youth. Strategies are presented for teaching key virtues like empathy, conscience, and self-control. This includes modeling good behavior, reinforcing virtues, and using moral discipline consistently.
Parenting involves promoting a child's healthy development from infancy to adulthood through ensuring their health, safety, education, and transmitting cultural values according to major sources. However, helicopter parenting, which is over-controlling and over-protective behavior, can have negative long-term effects on children such as difficulty becoming independent and self-sufficient adults. While providing engagement, over-involvement from helicopter parents can stunt children's emotional growth and learning to handle challenges on their own. Sources discuss the importance of allowing children to develop independence through making mistakes and experiencing normal adolescent development.

This document summarizes Erik Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development and James Marcia's four statuses of identity development. Erikson's stages focus on developing trust, autonomy, initiative, industry, identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity from infancy through late adulthood. Marcia identified four statuses - foreclosure, identity diffusion, moratorium, and identity achievement - that adolescents progress through as they develop a sense of self and commit to identities. The document also lists factors like physical changes, sexual identity, beliefs, and culture that contribute to identity development.
This document discusses incivility and its impacts, and provides suggestions for promoting civil engagement and building trust between government and communities. Some key points:

- Younger generations have less social trust and faith in institutions, so engagement is important. Thoughts are provided on boards, social media use

Analysis of a business problem using various normative theoriesAnura Kumara
The document analyzes a business problem from the perspectives of deontological, utilitarian, and egoism theories. A sales manager replaced a farmer's broken tractor engine for free without the company's approval. From a deontological view, the action was inconsistent and could not be universalized. A utilitarian analysis found more stakeholders experienced pain than pleasure. However, discussing it with the company could have helped the farmer while maintaining stakeholder benefits. While egoism sees helping customers as ethical, the action's consequences were risky for the company's relationship and reputation. In conclusion, the manager should have obtained management approval rather than act alone given the situation's ethical complexity.

Analysis of a business problem using various normative theoriesAnura Kumara
This document analyzes a business problem faced by a sales manager from an ethical perspective using various normative theories. The sales manager replaced a farmer's broken tractor engine for free even though the damage was not due to a manufacturing defect. Analyzing this through deontological and utilitarian perspectives suggests the action was unethical, as it lacks consistency and could damage the company's relationship with its supplier. However, from an egoist perspective focusing on the individual, the sales manager's actions seem ethical as he was helping a poor farmer in need. The document concludes by recommending the most ethical and sustainable course of action.

The document discusses capital structure theory and tools for capital structure management. It outlines three theories on optimal capital structure: independence theory, dependence theory, and moderate theory. It discusses how capital structure affects a firm's cost of equity, risk, and value. Agency costs increase with leverage as debt holders incur costs to monitor management. Firms should choose a capital structure that minimizes their weighted average cost of capital to maximize value.

The document discusses early childhood development from ages 0-5. It states that the experiences children have in their early years, including sounds, sights, touches, thoughts and interactions, build the biological "code" for success in life. It also discusses how cognitive, social and emotional capacities are intertwined and develop in the frontal lobe of the brain through interconnected neural circuits. These capacities rely on predictability and stability provided by caregivers in infancy and increasing self-regulation and autonomy as children age into school and adolescence. Pleasure and dopamine are released through acts of kindness, collaboration, problem-solving, physical activity, and creative/artistic pursuits. Parents are part of supporting development rather than just observing outcomes.
Children living in poverty face overwhelming stress that hinders their cognitive and social development. Growing up in high-stress environments correlates with higher rates of mental illness and weakened development. The constant state of stress deteriorates children's mental health and cognitive abilities needed for academic and social success. Additionally, untreated mental illness is common among impoverished children due to the high costs of treatment and lack of access to resources. This perpetuates a cycle where poverty increases the risks of mental illness and vice versa.
Raising Children of Character www.mannrentoy.comMann Rentoy
This document discusses the importance of character formation for youth in today's society. It argues that parents and teachers must work harder than past generations to develop good character due to societal changes. These include a culture of softness, increased peer influence, and more time spent with media and technology. The document provides tips for parents, such as limiting screen time, modeling good values, and teaching delayed gratification. It emphasizes the role of the family in shaping a child's conscience and advocates for countercultural parenting to develop strong character.

The document provides information on topics related to adolescent development including physical, emotional, and mental health issues. It discusses normal physical changes during puberty for both boys and girls. Emotional development in adolescents includes increased mood swings, self-consciousness, and risk-taking behavior due to ongoing brain development. Mental health issues covered include self-harm, suicide risks, and effective support strategies. Other topics addressed are sexuality, social influences like internet and gaming, and risks of alcohol and drug use among adolescents. This document discusses the importance of character along with knowledge. It states that knowledge without strong moral character is dangerous, as it can enable harm. It uses examples like giving a sports car to a drugged teenager to illustrate this. The document also contrasts examples of people with knowledge but poor character, like Donald Trump, against those with knowledge and good character, like Elon Musk. Overall, it argues that education should focus on developing both intelligence and strong principles in youth.
This Webinar was presented on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, as part of the free monthly series from Friends for Youth's Mentoring Institute with Special Presenter John Stirling, M.D.
Clinicians caring for victims of early abuse or neglect are often puzzled at their inability to respond to a more consistent and caring environment, including mentoring. This presentation synthesizes concepts from developmental neurobiology, attachment theory, and family ecology to help participants understand the obstacles faced in leaving abuse behind, and to suggest paths to more effective therapy. Mentoring is an important component in treatment and there will be a special focus on understanding the Big Picture regarding early trauma, including the physiologic response to stresses, learned helplessness, and intrauterine drug exposure, to show how these children and youth react differently and need special handling.
The document provides an overview of proven public relations tools that can be used to build a school district's reputation and support student success. It discusses 5 key PR tools: 1) Doing a good job and focusing on quality service, 2) Connecting PR efforts to student learning, 3) Providing excellent "WOW" customer service, 4) Leveraging the "power of three" through small acts of positivity, and 5) Trumpeting good news to the community. The overall message is that strategic, learning-focused communications can help districts engage stakeholders and enhance their reputation.

The document discusses adolescent grief and development following the death of a loved one. It notes that while adolescents experience grief similarly to adults, their cognitive abilities and defenses lead to different outward expressions of grief. Their grief may be masked by behaviors like acting out, substance abuse, or eating disorders as they seek support. Losses are so difficult for adolescents that they can only endure strong emotions briefly before distancing themselves, leading their grief to be unrecognized at times. The death of a parent during this identity-development period can be especially challenging.
The document discusses how social experiences shape the human brain and the importance of considering the social environment of schools. It covers three main themes: how social experiences affect the brain by changing its structure and function; the complex nature of the "social brain"; and how to enhance the social experience of schools. The social brain is regulated by different areas that respond to social cues, stress, bonding and more. Schools must provide opportunities for social cognition, grouping, play and skills development to support students' social brain development.
