History answers back
ABstrACt
This article highlights the distinctive turn in public discourse towards historical
resources, analogies and stories to help citizens make sense of the current era of
austerity through a selective analysis of the media coverage of the London 2012
Olympic Games. It argues that in straitened times British citizens are being asked to
make do, to accept the rolling back of state provision and to modify their expectations
of a civil society on the basis of historical myths as well as current realities. Having
noted this, the article asks where on television are the counter-discourses that may
also wish to lay a claim to a national history and to tell national stories and even to
contest the dismantling of the welfare state? How might these spaces work to resist
the prevalent criticism of public services, organized labour and popular protest and
to defend the class (and other) politics and values with which these have been histor-
ically associated? In answer to these questions this article offers a brief considera-
tion of the ways in which the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony deployed
history and historical reference.

During this age of austerity no one can have failed to notice how British tele-
vised national events such as the Royal Wedding and the Diamond Jubilee
have been deployed to conjure up wartime fortitude and a nostalgic commu-
nity spirit. This was also true of the news coverage running up to the London
2012 Olympic Games and to some degree of the Games itself. These last
took place in Britain in 1948 and were consequently known as the ‘Austerity
Games’, so naturally they chimed with current times and invited the airing
of personal recollections of shoe-string sports and ‘making do’. Ahead of the
Games, the Second World War Home Front and post-war years were invoked
at every turn. For example, when cyclist Bradley Wiggins stepped forward to
ring the bell at the start of the Opening Ceremony the BBC commentator
urged him to ‘keep calm and carry on’, using a slogan from the mid-twentieth-
century Home Front which is now ubiquitous in British media and marketing.
Likewise when Team GB had failed to win a gold medal several days into the
Games Britons were also advised by the Daily Telegraph (Rayner, Marsden
and Magnay 2012) to ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Unification of the Two Germans States
Berlin Wall was an obstacle that enclosed West Berlin that hindered its access by people coming from East Berlin and the surrounding regions. This scenario happened between 1961 and 1989; however, between 1949 and 1969, almost two million find a hundred thousand people from East Germany to the Western state. This action increased the number of skilled-labor, intellectuals, and professionals in the Western State[footnoteRef:0]. Remarkably, this action affected the economic prosperity of East Germany due to limited skilled labor, intellectuals, and professionals that worked in various departments in East Germany. Eastern Germany responded to the dubious activity to protect the economic prosperity of the Eastern state. In regards to this, the Eastern State built a block to hinder access of the citizens from the Eastern state to Western Berlin and entire Western Germany. The block was built for the first time in 1961 when the decree was implemented by the Volkskammer from Eastern Germany. The block was constructed using cinder blocks and barbed wire that replaced several concrete walls, which were supported by barbed wire and protected by soldiers in several watchtowers. Besides, the barrier was also protected by mines, watchtowers, and gun emplacements[footnoteRef:1]. Later in the 1980s, the walls systems, fortifications, and electrified fences were extended by almost 45 km that divided the Berlin City into two; western and eastern part[footnoteRef:2]. The cold war between the eastern and western Germany was solved letter, and the two states reunified to form one united Germany. The Berlin Wall constructed symbolized the undiplomatic relationship between eastern emanating from Western Europe and the cold war in East emanating from Western state. Almost 5,000 people from the eastern state crossed over the obstruction using all ways possible and reached the final destination safely, whereas other 5,000 were captured in their attempt that resulted in the massive killing of 191 people when they scrambled to cross the wall. Thereafter, the obstruction wall stopped to serve as a political barrier between the two German states.

History answers back
ABstrACt
This article highlights the distinctive turn in public discourse towards historical
resources, analogies and stories to help citizens make sense of the current era of
austerity through a selective analysis of the media coverage of the London 2012
Olympic Games. It argues that in straitened times British citizens are being asked to
make do, to accept the rolling back of state provision and to modify their expectations
of a civil society on the basis of historical myths as well as current realities. Having
noted this, the article asks where on television are the counter-discourses that may
also wish to lay a claim to a national history and to tell national stories and even to
contest the dismantling of the welfare state? How might these spaces work to resist
the prevalent criticism of public services, organized labour and popular protest and
to defend the class (and other) politics and values with which these have been histor-
ically associated? In answer to these questions this article offers a brief considera-
tion of the ways in which the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony deployed
history and historical reference.

During this age of austerity no one can have failed to notice how British tele-
vised national events such as the Royal Wedding and the Diamond Jubilee
have been deployed to conjure up wartime fortitude and a nostalgic commu-
nity spirit. This was also true of the news coverage running up to the London
2012 Olympic Games and to some degree of the Games itself. These last
took place in Britain in 1948 and were consequently known as the ‘Austerity
Games’, so naturally they chimed with current times and invited the airing
of personal recollections of shoe-string sports and ‘making do’. Ahead of the
Games, the Second World War Home Front and post-war years were invoked
at every turn. For example, when cyclist Bradley Wiggins stepped forward to
ring the bell at the start of the Opening Ceremony the BBC commentator
urged him to ‘keep calm and carry on’, using a slogan from the mid-twentieth-
century Home Front which is now ubiquitous in British media and marketing.
Likewise when Team GB had failed to win a gold medal several days into the
Games Britons were also advised by the Daily Telegraph (Rayner, Marsden
and Magnay 2012) to ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Unification of the Two Germans States
Berlin Wall was an obstacle that enclosed West Berlin that hindered its access by people coming from East Berlin and the surrounding regions. This scenario happened between 1961 and 1989; however, between 1949 and 1969, almost two million find a hundred thousand people from East Germany to the Western state. This action increased the number of skilled-labor, intellectuals, and professionals in the Western State[footnoteRef:0]. Remarkably, this action affected the economic prosperity of East Germany due to limited skilled labor, intellectuals, and professionals that worked in various departments in East Germany. Eastern Germany responded to the dubious activity to protect the economic prosperity of the Eastern state. In regards to this, the Eastern State built a block to hinder access of the citizens from the Eastern state to Western Berlin and entire Western Germany. The block was built for the first time in 1961 when the decree was implemented by the Volkskammer from Eastern Germany. The block was constructed using cinder blocks and barbed wire that replaced several concrete walls, which were supported by barbed wire and protected by soldiers in several watchtowers. Besides, the barrier was also protected by mines, watchtowers, and gun emplacements[footnoteRef:1]. Later in the 1980s, the walls systems, fortifications, and electrified fences were extended by almost 45 km that divided the Berlin City into two; western and eastern part[footnoteRef:2]. The cold war between the eastern and western Germany was solved letter, and the two states reunified to form one united Germany. The Berlin Wall constructed symbolized the undiplomatic relationship between eastern emanating from Western Europe and the cold war in East emanating from Western state. Almost 5,000 people from the eastern state crossed over the obstruction using all ways possible and reached the final destination safely, whereas other 5,000 were captured in their attempt that resulted in the massive killing of 191 people when they scrambled to cross the wall. Thereafter, the obstruction wall stopped to serve as a political barrier between the two German states.

- 2. Emil Stjernholm-Billing * This paper analyzes the relationship between capital and culture in the age of globalization. Focus is put on one specific media, television, and emphasis is put on one specific site of contestation: the Danish-Swedish co-production The Bridge (Bron/Broen, 2011). By revisiting Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s The Culture Industry, this essay explores and revitalizes the question what structures and strategies the culture industry relies upon today?
- 3. Emil Stjernholm-Billing The Bridge (Bron/Broen, 2011) revolves around a spectacular murder–– taking place on the middle of the Öresund bridge between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden––which subsequently forces Danish and Swedish police officials to cooperate to find the killer.
- 4. I will revisit the concept of the culture industry, primarily as it is theorized in two texts: first, I analyze Adorno’s essay “On Popular Music”, published in Studies in Philosophy and Social Sciences; and second “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception”, written with Max Horkheimer and published in Dialectic of Enlightenment.
- 5. Emil Stjernholm-Billing * This essay takes one particular medium as its object of analysis: television. Focus is put on two particularly salient negotiations: first, in the form of new technology; and second, the upsurge of regional commodification. Both highlight many of the tensions the television industry today faces.

Emil Stjernholm-Billing Technological advancements and new media practices profoundly have altered the way our lives are constructed, and consequently these changes can are also visible in the culture industry. For instance, the television media, dating back to the 1930s, now utilizes new media forms, in terms of online broadcasting, interactive participation and transnational narratives.

Emil Stjernholm-Billing Commodification: regional marketing is getting increasingly important as tourism appears as a concrete way of motivating private capital investors as well as regional funding. Standardization: the television industry economically depends on the creation of travelling concepts. The Bridge becomes The Tunnel?
- 9. Emil Stjernholm-Billing Provisional findings: The Bridge highlights some of the tensions the culture industry faces in the age of globalization. Here, the rise of new technology and new patterns of communication are central themes, both in terms of text and in terms of production. At the same time, the omnipresence of Adorno’s key notions–– standardization and commodification––underlines that the relationship between culture and capital remains a significant one.
