For far too long we've been forced to reuse layout patterns that have worked in the past, creating a web full of sites that all look the same. Narrow timelines, browser support restrictions and lack of a true grid system have led us to create work that is "good enough".
I've spent years exploring how we can make the web a more unique space. With some of the newer CSS techniques available, we can start to make more creative designs. CSS Grid Layout is on the horizon and will play a major role in the design of our sites. Finally having a true, 2 dimensional grid will give our layouts much more flexibility and it is on us to explore the possibilities.

I hope you enjoy a few things I've learned as I've gone through the highs and lows and my life. My Life Lessons are meant to inspire, reflect and engage the reader. We only have one life, so make it count.
Dear Reader,
I humbly present to you a collection of my insights into experiences that are by and large common to most of us. I have tried to put them down in a manner that it reaches out & the reader can connect with it.
It is not something that already doesn’t exist around us. It’s just that, we often don’t even realize what already exists around us. It is very similar to an incident which I remember vividly. I had taken my two year old daughter on a flight. We boarded the aircraft through an aerobridge. Once on board she kept on wanting to get onto an “airplane” similar to the one she was able to see through the window. I could not convince her that she was on one already.
Essentially this collection is about a journey that all of us are already undertaking. It’s just that, we are so engrossed in making the journey that, we don’t care to look outside the window to see what we are missing. It’s a snapshot of all the little things that are around us which we take so much for granted that, we have become oblivious of their very existence.
I fondly call it “SAU GRAM (100 gm) ZINDAGI”.

Suzanne A Sign of Things to Come
I don’t know when I started doing it. I guess I’ve always hated school and I’ve always been really nervous about things. A lot of the time, even before college, I used to play with my hair a lot and pull on it; the more nervous I became, the tighter I pulled. But I didn’t think there was anything unusual about it. You know, everyone has nervous habits that they turn to when they get stressed out, right? My parents were . . . let’s say “difficult.” They were always making me feel like I didn’t do well enough. “Couldn’t you have gotten an A? Couldn’t you play basketball or soccer? Couldn’t you have won the game? What could you have done to prepare for the test better? What can we learn from this? Why don’t you have a boyfriend? Maybe if you dressed differently? You know, we just want you to be happy.”
Many loving parents are described as being “overconcerned” about their children, or “overcontrolling” or “overinvolved.” Where do such patterns of behavior come from? What can parents do to avoid crossing the line in their efforts to guide and protect their maturing children?
I guess this whole thing really started a long time ago. When I was in seventh grade, I used to pluck out my eyelashes. I can’t remember how it started, but I remember that it used to relax me when I was tense. I also got the idea in my head that my eyelashes and my eyes were really irritated. I thought that maybe I had some dirt caught in there, and it was stuck between my eyelashes. So I would loosen it and stop the irritation by pulling the eyelash out. I actually remember thinking that there were microscopic bacteria—like I had seen in a science film—living on the end of the eyelash, wiggling around under my skin, and the bad eyelashes needed to be pulled out. The little pain of pulling the lash out was something I actually looked forward to, like when you have a hanging fingernail that hurts and you need to pull it out: a second of pain and instant relief. Once I started noticing that I was doing it, I would be really nervous right before I would pull it, and I would think that maybe I shouldn’t pull this one. Then, when I was pulling it out, I imagined I could feel the irritating part coming out. After it was over, I felt relieved, all the nervousness gone. I would look at the lash I had pulled, almost trying to see the little bacteria wiggling like a worm on a fishhook. Soon, my eyelids were running out of hair, but no one seemed to notice, so I thought it wasn’t a big deal. Maybe I wasn’t really plucking them all out, I thought. Maybe I was just pluck ...

So you’re fully prepared to embrace the awkward, we’ve
put together a couple of the most awkward moments
you may encounter in your day-to-day lives at university.

When you are standing in the doorway,
attempting to shove open a door that says ‘pull’
for a solid 3 minutes before a kind stranger does
the familiar *cough* ‘it says pull‘ *cough*.
While this has a high probability of occurring,
it’s such a common awkward moment that its
degree of awkwardness is super low.

classroom

We’re just going to say it; this can be one of the
most shameful experiences. However, while you
may think the whole class will be chuckling, we can
guarantee they’re all silently praying that it doesn’t
happen to them, ever. So in a way, you embracing
this moment will be an inspiration to all of those
who haven’t experienced this yet! #ownit

We can’t help it, sometimes we are just
waaayyy more excited to see someone than
they are to see us! This is not a bad thing
though and if anything, they’ll probably
be feeling more awkward for not being as
friendly as you are.
The intense awkward feeling occurs when
you over-greet someone who wasn’t waving
at you in the first place…
13. When you see
people you know…
but you don’t

Oh, nope, it’s not them’ – you, being super awkward.
Don’t stress this one, it literally happens all the time! And trust us
when we say that both parties usually feel just as awkward. Make
like Taylor and shake it off, or you can always pretend you were
waving at someone behind them…

That feeling you get when you realise ‘I’ve been here
before’ and you’re likely going in circles as you get lost on
campus. The good news is, most people DO get lost on
campus! Pull aside a fellow USQ-ian or duck into the closest
reception and ask for directions. If they can’t help you, this
awkward moment dissolves into thin air (two awkward
moments make a right).
15. Running into
an academic
outside of class

‘Seeing a teacher outside of school is like seeing a dog walk on
its hind legs’, Janis Ian, Mean girls.
If you find yourself face to face with your lecturer, it’s okay to
smile and say hello! Remember, they’re people too. Our pro
tip is to keep the conversation light and friendly. It’s probably not
best to engage in a full chat about how you couldn’t solve Task 3
in your latest assignment while you’re both grocery shopping…
16. Miss mouth,
spill food

You may just be tired or having a long day, it’s not your
fault that your chip covered in BBQ sauce didn’t want to
be eaten and instead decided to jump onto your clothes.
It’s also not your fault that you were wearing a white shirt
that day. These things just happen.
All we can do is embrace the moment and move on!
We don’t recommend removing your shirt at this point in
time, but perhaps you could strategically carry your study
equipment to hide the damage before escaping to the
nearest bathroom to review the situation.
19. EMBRACE the AWKWARD
Experiencing awkward moments is a lot more bearable with friends.
