The following items are related to the Discussions of the Human Person:
 Man – is the general term commonly used to refer to the entire human race
 Human – refers to man as species
- Human Being is also used to distinguish man from animals
 Person – is much more complex term which is generally refers to a human
being granted recognition of certain rights, protection, responsibilities and
dignity above all.
►Personhood – state of being a person
►Human Nature – refers to the characteristics that distinguish
humans from all other creatures
- these traits are assumed to arise independent of the
influence of culture and society
ex: thinking, feeling, acting
- these traits are considered to form the essence of
humanity, and without them, an individual may not be considered a
human person
What is the Human Person?
The most basic definition of a human being relates to
the nature of human as animals.
How do we know that we are Human Persons?
Am I a rock? Am I a lamp? Am I a dog?
Is your pet truly aware of what is happening around it?
Can your pet truly feel emotions in the same way that you
do?
Is your pet capable of reflection? Can it question its nature
or identity as a dog?
Can your pet reflect on its actions and behavior? Do you
think it can feel guilt or satisfaction in the same way you
do?
Traits that Define a Human Person
Self-awareness
Self-determination
- Free Will
- Consequence
Externality
Dignity
Self-Awareness
Refers to the person having a clear perception of oneself,
including his or her thoughts, emotions, identity, and actions
Human person is defined by a deeper awareness which is
driven by rationality or human thought
- this awareness give rise to the notion of the “self”, which
philosophers describe as the person who is actively aware that
he or she is perceiving and experiencing reality
I am a person
I am alive
I exist
I am here
I am present
I am living at this very moment
- This awareness of the self also enables us to experience the
“inner world” that is defined by our personal thoughts and
ideas
Self Determination
This refers to the capability of person to make
choices and decisions based on their own
preferences, monitor and regulate their actions,
and be goal oriented and self directed.
We are persons because we act and we are aware
of our actions
►Enables us to do actions whenever we want to and
makes self-determination possible
►It is the capacity to choose a course of action from
various alternatives
►The existence of free will enables a person to act
willfully, control his or her actions, and recognize
himself or herself as the source of action
Free Will
Consequences
Consequences is the result or effect of an action or
condition.
As persons we are aware that each action we perform
has a consequences.
- philosophers believe that a person acts freely and
with due regard for the consequences of his or her
actions
► The capability to reach out and interact with others and the
world
► Philosophers consider a man a social being, and that a
person never exists in isolation
- we may be able to experience interiority – we imagine and
think of ourselves – but we also share these thoughts with other
persons
Externality
Dignity
►“the innate right to be valued and respected”
►Philosophers consider all humans as having
an inherent worth or value
“You’re worthless!”
►Philosophers do not equate value or worth with
any quantifiable measure such as price
“Each person is worth the same as
another person in the sense that every
person is priceless, unique,
unrepeatable, and irreplaceable”
• Have you ever wondered about what is beyond our
world? Or universe?
• Have you ever wanted to become better at
something or to learn something new?
• Do you see yourself becoming a better person over
time?
• Have you ever imagined a life that is better than
what you are living now?
TRANSCENDENCE
- One important trait that distinguishes the human person from
other beings in existence
- Ability to surpass limits; The state of excelling, surpassing or
going beyond usual limits
- Our mind is an important tool that allows us to go beyond
many of our physical limits
Being physically limited in our abilities does not prevent us
from hoping for or aspiring to greater things
Philosophy gives us useful tools to
explore our limitations and possibilities
for transcendence. The essence of
transcendence is to acknowledge our
limitations, identify possibilities for
development, and change ourselves for
the better
1.Describe one character from
the movie, “The Others” in
terms of their: body, soul and
spirit.
2.Write one of your limitations
and list down at least 2 plans
towards your transcendence.
Being a unique human person,
write down one skill, trait,
ability that you have that you
think others do not.

Editor's Notes

  1. Personhood denotes individual who are moral agents, right and wrong. Blameworthy and praiseworthyNature - the essential qualities or characteristics by which something is recognized
  2. Clear perception or full attention natin sa sarili. Rationality, the state of having a good sense and social judgement. The way we form opinions and thoughts. A human person know Human person is the point of convergence between material ad spiritual entities, that is between the soul and the body. Location E or she is living is livinng an experience at hini lang basta alam niya, siya ay active participant of that experience.
  3. As persons, we are able to exercise our imagination and reflection to go beyond our own thoughts and experience.. Ex: we imagine ourselves in other places without traveling there -- when in classroom, you find yourselves daydreaming -- we can’t travel thru time, but we recall past and imagine the future…. Dragons
