eMAR Explained
What is eMAR?
A Medication Administration Record or MAR (eMAR for
electronic versions) is the report that serves as a legal record of
the drugs administered by a healthcare professional to a Patient
or Resident of a facility.
The MAR is part of a Patient’s permanent record on their
medical chart. The healthcare professional signs off on the
record at the time that the drug is administered.
MARs are commonly referred to as drug charts.
versions may be referred to as eMARs.

Electronic
How Does eMAR Work?
• The eMAR relays drug dosage data to the pharmacy, which is then
connected to nursing stations.
• The following prescription data is included in an eMAR: Medication
dosage, number of refills, medication type, medication classification,
patient refill history, real-time prescription status, tracking capabilities
• Electronic prescription forms such as eMAR can save lives and improve
quality care for countless patients.
• eMARs also require less manual data-entry and eliminate the need for
paper prescriptions, thus reducing costs.
• Quality assurance flags and audit tracking tools are in place in eMars so
that electronic prescription security is always attained and physician and
pharmacy error rates are kept to a minimum.
• Efficient operating systems and simplified eMAR provide vast digital
prescription information, including medication history and refill history.
How Does eMAR Help Healthcare Professionals Do Their Jobs?

•

The Physician is able to order, re-order, refill and add to MAR directly in the eMAR. Ensures
accurate prescribing as there is no risk of illegible handwriting. The Physician can access all
historical administration information available by eReports on demand, as well as complete the 3Month Physician Review in real time.

•

The Pharmacist can minimize medication errors as eMAR limits transcription and processing errors.
Real time information exchange among users leads to a significant time saving for processing
medication orders in real time.

•

The Administrator of the facility can define various roles that dictate the level of access that staff
will have. These security features enhance the integrity of the system as nurses only have access to
information that the Administrator chooses. The Administrator, in turn, can access all areas of the
system which is critical from a quality control perspective and designate any back up.

•

The Nurse can accurately administer the medications by verifying the 5 R`s of administration: Right
Patient; Right Dose; Right Medication; Right Time; Right Route. eMAR reduces the medication
administration time by 40%.
