More Benefits of Using an EMR or EHR Over Paper Charts Save a Tree or Two – You won’t eliminate your use of paper, but you can significantly reduce the amount of paper/charts you use in your practice.	Legibility of Notes – No more dealing with various handwriting styles since notes are typed.Accessibility of Charts – Indexed and easily searchable by multiple identifiers. No more searching the entire clinic for a lost paper chart.Transcription Costs Savings – Many users have been able to save on transcription costs by implementing an EMR.Space Savings – Many people are able to save space where they’d normally be storing shelves and shelves of paper charts.Eliminate Staff – This almost never happens immediately. Usually this happens through natural turnover of employees and usually occurs with your front desk or medical records staff.Eligibility for Pay-for-performance – It could take two years or more for you to implement an EHR and implement a meaningful quality improvement mechanism that would lead to your receiving payments from these programs.New Physician Recruitment – Many new physicians are looking for practices that use an EHR and will only work for an organization that uses an EHR.Multiple Users Use a Chart Simultaneously – Most EMR programs support multiple users accessing a chart at the same time. Many even allow multiple people to chart notes at the same time also.Lab Results Returned Automatically – This depends on a lab interface, but is more reliable and integrated with the care given.X-Ray Results Returned Automatically – This also depends on a X-ray interface, but has the same possible benefits of a lab interface.Electronic Prescriptions – Scripts sent electronically or printed out avoid problems of legibility by the pharmacy receiving the script.Spell check – Many EMR software includes a spell check and often even include a medical dictionary.Disaster Recovery – Depending on your EMR backup schedule, you can store a copy of your data in multiple locations for better disaster recovery. Plus, in an emergency you could carry a backup of your data with you. Think about how you’d carry a room full of charts with you in an emergency.Drug to Drug Interaction Checking – Most EMR provide a database of Drug to Drug interactions when writing a prescription.Drug to Allergy Interaction Checking – Most EMR provide a database of Drug to Allergy Interaction checking when writing a prescription.Quality of Care?Increased Efficiency?Better Patient Services?Improved Workflow?Improved Patient CommunicationsImproved Accuracy for Coding Evaluation and ManagementImproved Drug Refill CapabilitiesImproved Charge CaptureImproved Claim Submission ProcessReduced Medical Records Transportation Costs	Disclaimer: I also feel it necessary to make note that not all of these things will be a benefit to every clinic with every EMR. However, these are possible benefits that one should consider when implementing an EMR.
But what about security? What about HIPAA and HITECH?
The Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, known as HIPAA, require the Department of Health and Human Services to establish national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health plans, and employers. It also addresses the security and privacy of health data. Adoption of these standards has greatly improved the efficiency and effectiveness of the nation's health care system by encouraging the widespread use of electronic data interchange in health care. While HIPAA compliance is the responsibility of each and every healthcare organization, the PracticeTRANSfusion system is dedicated to making it easier, safer and more cost-effective for them to reach that goal, by providing the technical controls and safeguards that support all of our clients’ HIPAA compliance policies and procedures. In fact, PracticeTRANSfusion meets or exceeds all HIPAA requirements. Below are some of the things we incorporate within our application to meet compliance.·Security: 128-bit encryption used at all times for all files being transferred. ·Accessibility: All users have unique user names and passwords. ·Auditing: All access to patient information is recorded for auditing capability. This includes edits, printing, viewing, etc.In addition to our technological capabilities to help ensure your full HIPAA compliance, PracticeTRANSfusion is committed to serving our clients as a knowledgeable and informed source regarding any changes in HIPAA regulations.
Thursday, August 6, 2009 Is Cloud-Computing Right for Health IT? What, exactly, is “cloud computing?” Is it appropriate for health IT? What are the security issues and risks? “Cloud computing” is a term described as a style of computing in which on-demand resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Software-as-service (SaaS) is a type of cloud computing, where users do not need to install or maintain any software themselves – simple Internet access and a browser are all that is needed. Users do not need to have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the “cloud” that supports them – the Internet site (e.g. Practice FusionTM provides a unified dashboard to the user, and works out the technical issues of presenting that data in the background. Is this approach appropriate to health data? One of the greatest advantages of a “cloud” approach is that the network, server and security headaches that existfor locally-installed, legacy client/server systems is eliminated. Cost and poor usability have been cited as the biggest obstacles to adoption of health IT – especially Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems – and has resulted in problematically-low EHR adoption rates. Eliminating this cost, and the IT maintenance burdens that are often beyond the reach of small medical practices, clearly removes these significant roadblocks to EHR adoption. What about safety? There are several issues around safety of health data which should be separately considered.Data safety in the event of disaster-recovery is better when the data is hosted, in a “cloud.” With local data installation, and certainly with paper records, a localdisaster (building fire, tornado, hurricane, etc.) can wipe out local data. The only point of failure in a cloud-based approach is loss of internet access. Redundancy of internet access (hard lines, wireless, cell-phone) is recommended to minimize this risk. Security of the data from the standpoint of malicious hacks. Compared to locally-housed resources, “cloud” services typically improves security because SaaSproviders (like Practice Fusion) are able to devote resources to solving security issues that many customers cannot afford. This has been the subject of a recent Practice Fusion blog post. By implementing high-level encryption across connections, as well as housing the data in a dis-aggregated and encrypted structure, the Practice Fusion "cloud" implements all the security requirements resulting from HHS "meaningful use" criteria.Privacy of data. Access to medical data is tightly controlled, and Practice Fusion has devoted much attention to this. Especially in an environment where a patient’s EHR data might be shared between practices taking care of that patient, and where EHR data is shared with a patient-centered Personal HealthRecord , diligent attention to privacy and permissions must be at the root of a “cloud”-hosted EHR or PHR system. The approach to EHRs and PHRs that has been charted by Practice Fusion, is a tremendously positive step for everyone. Elimination of barriers to HERadoption, while at the same time ensuring security and privacy of protected health information, are all positive results of using the “cloud” approach. They will move us all toward the true intent of “Meaningful Use” of EHRs – the basis of the federal stimulus around the emerging national health IT policy.

You will start to realize these benefits and see a return
Those offices who use PracticeTRANSfusion decrease accounts receivable days as well, providing billing personnel with authorized access to transcripts to reduce the time for coding, thereby reducing the time to final bill. Today, many clinicians dictate referral letters in addition to notes.  These referral letters are little more than an introduction and a summary of the clinician’s findings.  Clinicians can choose to use our platform to automatically generate a cover letter that includes the findings from the note, thereby eliminating referral letters. 	Improved Workflow	You may use PracticeTRANSfusion to keep patient schedules and referring clinicians’ addresses accessible on-line, via the internet so that information within the transcript is accurate and complete.  No more researching a transcript after it has been returned to the medical facility for an address or the birth date of the patient.   This information is securely kept on-line and is used by the transcriptionists when transcribing a dictation.Time Savings	With PracticeTRANSfusion's automated workflow you will reduce your dictation-to-chart-placement turnaround time because transcripts are accessible to authorized staff immediately upon completion.
