6. Folkbildning /Liberal Adult Education / in
Sweden
• Swedish folkbildning is the collective name for the
activities conducted by the country’s folk high
schools and study associations in the form of
courses, study circles and cultural activities.
• Folkbildning is a part of the liberal non-formal
educational system.
7. Liberal Adult Education concept
• Voluntary
• Participants influence the content
• Learning and social interaction go hand in
hand
• Contributes to strengthening of civic society
through close cooperation with volunteer
organisations, NGOs
8. Study circles
The study circle is the most important form of study
in the study associations. In the study circle, a small
group meets to learn together based on a plan of
study and with a study circle leader.
There are study circles in hundreds of different
subjects. Some have a more theoretical emphasis,
such as language, history and studies in current
social issues.
Others are more practically oriented, such as dance,
woodworking, instrumental music and so forth.
9. Every year, the 10 study associations arrange:
• Approximately 285,000 study circles with a total of almost 2 million
Participants
• Approximately 250,000 cultural programmes with more than 15
million participants
Every term, the 150 folk high schools have:
• Approximately 26,500 participants in extended courses
• Approximately 80,000 participants in short courses
Public grants to folk high schools and study associations in 2009:
• From the state: approximately EUR 328,565,000
• From county councils: approximately EUR 82,496,000
• From municipalities: approximately EUR 42,517,000

Large inflow of immigrants in Europe (1 mln in Sweden) Target group is… Why is this the most disadvantaged group? = least integrated one - have not succeeded to enter labour market - live on social welfare or black job - very limited Swedish - socially isolated - not familiar with culture / law structures The research shows that Sw. government arranges a lot of integration activities plus a lot of money spent. Soc. Activities – to activate Pre-vocational – to provide them with formal knowledge to enter formal education Only 5 % make this step
The general goal is: To achieve this we intend to: EM-Kit to give both necessary information and to motivate them Partnership will support this process and make the result sustainable
We chose Folkbildning (Liberal Adult Education) as a basis for the EM-kit It is a unique concept for Scandinavian countries FB – is a non-formal education arranged by Study Associations and Folk High Schools and financed by government
Here you see the main attributes of the FB This form of education has its origins in people movement against alcoholism in the 18th century In form of study circles – campaign against Before Sweden entered the EU – a lot of study circles to rise awareness among sitizents what EU means Now: the same way of working. Till exempel – Swedish for Ukraininans.. We are administrator for them.
Not formal class or lecture Study circle leader not teacher Very flexible Do not get any formal certificate
Each partner has to cooperate with 1 or 2 NGOs: To test the EM-kit on participants To Develpp this kit together with representatives (realistic) Further each partner aims to involve well trusted individuals among the target group: Good example Trusted Easier communication on the same language ATTENTION! To ask partners if they have this contact
Roger has one example of good practices regarding networking for this target group. He will tell us this in his presentation
