1. Analysis of the shootout scene in Four Brothers directed by John Singleton, 2005 focusing on
Mise en Scene and Cinematography
I have chosen the film Four brothers and i have chosen this scene because it is a very powerful
and action packed scene and it shows the relationship and how all of the brothers would risk
their lives for each other. Throughout this scene i will be analysing the film form of mise en
scene and cinematography.
The scene starts off with a close up shot of jack answering the door then cuts to a mid range
shot of a hooded man walking away producing a rude gesture over his shoulder towards jack,
also when the rude gesture is presented it stands out over everything else in the shot because
he is wearing red gloves which stands out against the cold white and blue colours in the scene.
This then causes the viewer to think that something about this situation isn't right. This is shown
by the man being hooded and this indicates that he wants to keep his identity hidden and it
causes the viewer to ask themselves why is he hooded and trying to hide his identity. Then cuts
back to jack being hit with a snowball and the camera cuts to a close up shot to show the
frustration on his face then the camera cuts to a handheld camera to make the chase more
dynamic and makes you feel like you are there and causes this moment to be more dramatic.
The chase momentarily stops and the camera cuts to a close up shot of the hooded character
and he turns and reveals that he is wearing a hockey which takes us back to the concept of why
is this man hooded and now masked and hiding his identity, he then brings a gun up into the
camera shot and aims it at jack . The camera once more snaps to a close up shot of jack and
this camera shot is perfect because it show the expression on his face from the realisation that
a gun is being pointed directly at him. Jack is then shot in the shoulder and falls to his knees, the
camera cuts back to the gunman and this constant cutting between characters is to
