Research
By Michael Ivan
You’re Next(Home Invasion)
I watched the trailer and a few clips from
“ Your Next”
Here is a link to the trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez0YcXsWL8I
Things that I noticed:
• It is evident that all the attackers have masks on to conceal
their identity.
• Settings are often isolated and far away from society.
• Realistic blood to convey that the film is going to be
gory/scary.
• Victims seemed to be trapped and cornered in one area,
which connotes that they have no escape.
Screenshots from “You’re Next”
This screenshot shows that the killers are
wearing masks to conceal their identity.
This screenshot shows a woman holding a
weapon which is a counter stereotypical
representation of women.
This screenshot shows that they have been
watching them without the family knowing.
Halloween 1978 (Slasher)
I watched the trailer and a few clips from
“Halloween”.
Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHuOtLTQ_1I
Things that I noticed:
• The killer typically is an outcast to society.
• Stereotypically there is a big confrontation
between the protagonist and antagonist.
• The victims are isolated in a small area (house),
meaning that they are trapped.
• Women seen as vulnerable and fragile.
Screenshots from Halloween (1978)
This screenshot shows that the women is banging on the
door in fear showing that she is vulnerable and scared.
This screenshot shows the setting of the house and shows
how they are isolated.
This screenshot shows that the killer is an outcast to society
and that a big confrontation is about to happen as he is
walking towards his victim.
Cloverfield (Giant Monsters)
I watched the trailer and a few clips from
“Cloverfield”
Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxqSIsxMlYQ
Things that I noticed:
• Many weapons such as guns, rocket launchers, etc.
• The monster causes mass destruction to the
environment.
• Humans team up to fight against the big monster.
Screenshots from “Cloverfield” (Giant Monsters)
This screenshot shows the mass destruction that the monster
causes, as we see part of the building fly off.
This screenshot shows the type of weapons that
the army uses, for instance rocket launchers.
This screenshot shows that the humans are working
in numbers to try and beat the giant monster.
The Wolfman(Werewolf)
I watched the trailer and some clips from
“The Wolfman”
Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JB1NY2xut8
Things that I noticed:
• Weapons such as guns are used, this shows that
this film is going to be violent.
• The werewolf man is an outcast to society and
is being hunted down.
• The werewolf would disguise his identity and
hide from society.
Screenshots from “The Wolfman” (Werewolf)
This screenshot shows that weapons such as guns
are used in this film, this connotes that the film is
going to be about violence.
This screenshot shows that the werewolf man is
disguising as a normal human being in order to
hide from society.
This screenshot shows that once caught he starts
getting tortured which explains why the wolf man
is running away from society and is hiding.
Poltergeist 2015 (Ghosts and Spirits)
I watched the trailer and some
clips from “Poltergeist” (2015) Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u2KUpPNIf4
Things that I noticed:
• Focuses on more of the children, which makes
the audience feel sympathetic towards them.
• Assistance is needed therefore they call
professionals to try and help.
• The monster is typically hidden and sneaks up
behind others without showing itself which
helps bring up tension.
Screenshots from “Poltergeist” (2015)
This screenshot shows that the film focuses more on
the children and that the victims are children.
This screenshot shows that they have called for help
to try and sort out the problem.
This screenshot shows that the monster doesn’t really
show itself and instead plays around and moves
things about such as this clown toy.
Buried (Phobia and Isolation)
I watched the trailer and clips from
“Buried”
Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRQ0oqFBoP4
Things I noticed:
• No real setting, just focused on one
place, emphasising the fact of
isolation.
• Only focused on one person
throughout the whole trailer, the male
protagonist, showing he is alone and
has no help, which creates tension.
• Mise en scene such as blood, help
reinforce that he is in trouble and
needs help.
• It’s a race against time, therefore they
show the watch constantly.
Screenshots from “Buried”
This screenshot shows that he is looking at the time which
emphasises the race against time to get saved before he
dies.
This screenshot shows that the main male protagonist has
blood on him, showing that he is in danger.
This screenshot shows that the male protagonist is all alone
by himself and needs help and leaves the audience with the
enigmatic of if he will be able to suvive.
28 Days Later (Virus)
I have looked at the trailer and clips
from “28 days later” Here is a link to the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7ynwAgQlDQ
Things I noticed:
• The theme of running away is very evident, they do
this in order to survive and leaves an enigmatic to the
audience if they will survive or not.
• The main male protagonist has a costume that looks
like he just came out of hospital.
• The streets are abandoned as no one is on the streets.
Screenshots from “28 days later”
This screenshot shows that the protagonist is wearing a
hospital gown, and looks like he just came out of a hospital.
This screenshot shows that the streets are abandoned, this
also leaves an enigmatic for the audience as they want to
know to know why there are no people on the streets.
This screenshot shows that many people are running
away from something which leaves the audience
wondering what are they running from and why. This
creates tension.
