● The earliest period of Maoris knows as the 
“Archaic” period.(1280-1500)

● They has their own language. 
● From about 1890, maori people realized that 
English is important. 
● They insisted that their children have to learn 
English. 
● They used numbers, like the people from the post-war 
years.
Population 
● In 1796 there were 100 000 Maori. 
● In 1896 there were only 42 113 people. 
● Right now there are 598 605 people.
Society 
● Most Maoris lived in villages. 
● Maori society across New Zealand was stratified 
into three classes of people: rangatira, chiefs and 
ruling families. 
● They can be in relationships between different 
classes.
Special events in New Zealand 
● 1200-1300 – ancestors of the Maori arrive by canoe 
from other parts of Polynesia 
● 1815 – first british missionaires arrive 
● 1893 – New Zealand becomes world's first country 
to give women the vote 
● 1888 – Reefton becomes the first town to have 
electricity by Walter Prince 
● 1947 – New Zealand gains full independence from 
Britain

● Abel Tasman, Dutch explorer, was the first one 
who sighted New Zealand(1642, 13 december) 
● Tasman left without going ashore 
● James Cook, British explorer, visites New Zealand 
(1769, 6 october) 
● Cook drew a map about New Zealand and wrote 
about Maori people
