Gratitude of Ash Phillis Wheatley drew attention in the 18thcentury for being a black slave, and a
child prodigy who was able to write poems and songs. She was born in Gambia, Africa, and brought to
Boston as a slave when she was a child, and became slave and companion to John Wheatley s wife. As
she grew older, John Wheatley s wife viewed her as a feeble and brilliant girl who deserves to be
educated and felt great affection toward her. Therefore, Susanna Wheatley s daughters taught Phillis
how to read and write, so she delivered her honest opinions through her writings (Baym and Levine
763). Then she became the first African American writer to publish a book of poetry while other slaves
were forbidden to learn how to read and write. Her ability to write and read gave her freedom of
expression and enabled her to become a free woman. Her literacy influenced her surroundings in
numerous ways. She was acknowledged by many people for her great poetical talents ( Phillis
Wheatley, the First para 3). In the poem On Being Brought from Africa to America, Phillis Wheatley
appeals to ethos and pathos, uses suitable diction and a metaphor to demonstrate that the

Canto V Analysis
SUMMARY
Dante and Virgil have just left limbo, the first circle of hell, and are now on their way into the second
circle of hell, where hell really begins. It is here that Dante first witnesses the punishment brought
upon the sinners. They encounter Minos, the beast judge who blocks the way into the second circle.
He examines each soul as they pass through and determines which circle of hell they must go to by
winding his tail around himself. Minos warns Dante of passing through but Virgil silences him. Dante

TONE This Canto describes the first real level of hell. The canto is very poetic and makes use of many
similes, metaphors, and adjectives. There is also no shortage of hyperboles. The canto begins by
describing the qualities of the second circle by describing the voice of the damned rose in a bestial
moan, (v 3) referring to the damned rose as those lovers driven by passion who were condemned for
their acts of adultery.
In verse 25, Dante describes the choir of anguish to be like a wound with a simile. Next, by using a
metaphor, he describes the fate of the adulterous sinners and their punishment as being battered
eternally by the winds and storms of hell, as they were figuratively battered by the winds of passion in
their lives on earth. He describes with a simile how as cranes go over sounding their harsh cry, /
leaving the long streak of their flight in air, / so come spirits, wailing as they fly (v 46 48). Finally, he
makes use of another simile to iterate how after Francesca tells of her tale of love, Dante faints and
falls, as a corpse might fall, to the dead floor of hell (v 140).
IMAGERY This canto begins to delve into the more sublime, dark, and mysterious. Words like,
moaning, screeching, and lamenting give this canto a sad and depressed feeling. Spatially, I can

Are men and women s sexual desire the same as we get older or is it just a myth that a women s desire
decreases as we get older? It has been my experience that conversations with other women tend to
always lead into when we had to have sex last. Most of the women I talk to about this topic do not
enjoy sex as much as they once used to. The significant other seems to want to have sex much more
than the female does. I understand this does not include everyone. One of my goals for this class was

This paper addresses four problems that policing faces in the United States. The problems that will be
covered throughout the paper are: police discretion, race and policing, police corruption, and police
use of force. Throughout the paper, I will provide an understanding for each problem, discuss some
issues of each, and provide some suggestions of how these problems should be addressed. I will
provide some examples of each problem. This semester we covered many topics related to policing
and these four topics are of interest to me.
The first pressing problem that I will be discussing is police discretion. Police discretion is defined as
the decision an officer makes if they want to proceed with a police matter or give someone a warning.
Mastrofski (2004) described discretion as officers having freedom with choosing different options of
performing their daily duties. Officers are expected to go out on the street and respectfully do their

However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often
young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, If this were a

My process for creating this project was fairly simple. Upon being informed of this assignment, my
