Introduction
• Gashiram kotwal is a
Marathi play witten by
playwright vijay Tendulkar
in 1972 as a response to
the rise of a Local polical
Party, in Maharashtra.
• The play is a political satire,
written as historical drama.

• It is based on the life of Nana phadnsvis one of the prominet
ministers in the court of Peshwa of Pune and Gashiram
Kotwal , the police chief of the city.
• It's theme is how men in power give rise to ideogies to serve
their purpose, and later destroy them when they become
useless.
• It was first performed on 16 December 1972 , by the
progressive Dramatica Association in Pune.
About play
• In the play Gashiram is main character.
• He comes to Pune .
• He is working with Lavani Dancer.
• Gashiram being a Bhrmin goes to connect alms at the
Peshwa's festivel the next day .
• However he is ill - treated there and is charged with
pick- pocketing and imprisoned for the office.

• He then decide to take
revenge.
• So the play continues on
to reach the next part of
this play.
• Gashiram exchange his
own daughter to get the
post of kotwal of Pune
From Nana.
Nana gets Gauri and Gashiram gets
Power and position.

• Having got the post he begins to enforce strict rules in the
city.
• He starts asking for permits for everything and starts
throwing people in jail for the smallest offences.
• In the meantime, Gashiram's daughter is impregnated by Nana,
and dies during childbirth.
• The situation goes out hand when a few people in the jail die
from suffocation.

• The Brahmins then complain to the Peshwa.
• The Peshwa summons Nana who orders Gashiram to be
killed in the most inhumane way possible.
Suffering
• He suffers because he does not looks like Brahimins , and
that ' s why he suffers a lot.
• He humilities a lot the play
• He is good man. But situations makes him bad person.
• All Brahmins behaves with him very badly.
• He is not thief But becsuse of his look he becomes
the thief.

• He tries to proves his self .But he fails . And he becomes
criminal. He does not do anything then he punished ,he is
angry and then he decides to take revenge.
• when he works with Lavani Dancer at that time he also
humiliates by Nana .
• For him this city is new. That's why he needs a support and
through his works he wants respect.
• But the does not get support and respct.

• So his suffering converts into the revenge.
• And he becomes kotwal, and starts to take a revenge with
that people.
• And he becomes more strict, and he creates many rules and
those who break the rules he gives then punishment .
• At the end he also killed by people in very inhuman way.
Conclusion
• In the play struggle for identity and struggle for
belongingess is there.
• In the play is ignored and humiliaties by people.

  • 2. Introduction • Gashiram kotwal is a Marathi play witten by playwright vijay Tendulkar in 1972 as a response to the rise of a Local polical Party, in Maharashtra. • The play is a political satire, written as historical drama.
  • 3. Continue... • It is based on the life of Nana phadnsvis one of the prominet ministers in the court of Peshwa of Pune and Gashiram Kotwal , the police chief of the city. • It's theme is how men in power give rise to ideogies to serve their purpose, and later destroy them when they become useless. • It was first performed on 16 December 1972 , by the progressive Dramatica Association in Pune.

About play • In the play Gashiram is main character. • He comes to Pune . • He is working with Lavani Dancer. • Gashiram being a Bhrmin goes to connect alms at the Peshwa's festivel the next day . • However he is ill - treated there and is charged with pick- pocketing and imprisoned for the office.
  • 5. Continue... • He then decide to take revenge. • So the play continues on to reach the next part of this play. • Gashiram exchange his own daughter to get the post of kotwal of Pune From Nana.
  • 6. Nana gets Gauri and Gashiram gets Power and position.

Continue... • Having got the post he begins to enforce strict rules in the city. • He starts asking for permits for everything and starts throwing people in jail for the smallest offences. • In the meantime, Gashiram's daughter is impregnated by Nana, and dies during childbirth. • The situation goes out hand when a few people in the jail die from suffocation.
  • 8. Continue... • The Brahmins then complain to the Peshwa. • The Peshwa summons Nana who orders Gashiram to be killed in the most inhumane way possible.
  • 9. Suffering • He suffers because he does not looks like Brahimins , and that ' s why he suffers a lot. • He humilities a lot the play • He is good man. But situations makes him bad person. • All Brahmins behaves with him very badly. • He is not thief But becsuse of his look he becomes the thief.
  • 10. Continue.... • He tries to proves his self .But he fails . And he becomes criminal. He does not do anything then he punished ,he is angry and then he decides to take revenge. • when he works with Lavani Dancer at that time he also humiliates by Nana . • For him this city is new. That's why he needs a support and through his works he wants respect. • But the does not get support and respct.

Continue... • So his suffering converts into the revenge. • And he becomes kotwal, and starts to take a revenge with that people. • And he becomes more strict, and he creates many rules and those who break the rules he gives then punishment . • At the end he also killed by people in very inhuman way.
  • 12. Conclusion • In the play struggle for identity and struggle for belongingess is there. • In the play is ignored and humiliaties by people.
