1. John Dryden was an influential 17th century English poet, literary critic, translator and playwright who came to dominate English literary life during the Restoration period.
2. As a critic, Dryden was one of the first in England to use historical analysis and emphasize the importance of native elements in literature rather than blindly following French rules and traditions.
3. While Dryden greatly admired the ancients, he was not a strict follower of classical rules and was more interested in a work being good for its time rather than conforming to preconceived theories of art. Dryden placed criticism on a solid foundation to guide future generations.
Death Be Not Proud - John Donne
John Donne was a 17th century English poet known for his metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical poetry uses philosophical concepts and complex language to explore the relationship between the human and spiritual world. Donne's poem "Death be not proud" personifies death and argues it should not be proud of its power to overcome humans, as death is merely a restful picture compared to eternal life after. The poem uses dramatic language and its message is powerfully delivered in the final lines.

Sentimental comedy elicits emotion and features middle class characters that are generally good. Anti-sentimental comedy elicits laughter and features sophisticated and arrogant upper class characters. Sentimental comedies, like "Stoops to Conquer", have elements of morality, virtue, and manners. Anti-sentimental comedies, like "School for Scandal", use irony, wit, laughter, and farce to portray characters. The document discusses the differences between sentimental and anti-sentimental comedy forms.
