This document outlines learning objectives for understanding information-based texts. It will help students recognize text structures, understand how these texts are used, and identify different types. It discusses how an author's purpose, such as to entertain, persuade, or inform, affects what they write. Readers should consider the author's purpose to evaluate what is being presented. Examples are provided of texts with persuasive purposes on both sides of the hunting debate. The document concludes by defining information text and providing examples of different types.

Midterm Essay Metacommentary (750 Words)Form The form of thi.docxssuserf9c51d
Midterm Essay: Metacommentary (750 Words)
Form: The form of this essay will take after Jenny Boully’s The Body, an Essay. Rather than writing a standard essay form, you will instead write only footnotes that reference an absent body text. The body text you reference can be a real text, such as a text from class, your own writing, or elsewhere. Alternatively, it can an imagined text, one that doesn’t actually exist at all.
Content: The content of this essay is your commentary on something else. Your notes about the absent text you are referencing. Your observations and thoughts about that which we cannot, ourselves, as readers, see. If your absent text is a poem from class, then your essay will be your thoughts on the poem. If your absent text is a grocery list you put together the night before, then your essay will be your thoughts on that grocery list.
Citations: You must reference or cite three texts, either poems or essays, from the readings we’ve done in class.
Expanded Midterm Explanation
When writing this paper, you’ll begin by choosing something from your journal, from your notes, from lecture, from the texts we’ve read in class, etc.
Ex 1: As the Vietnamese delegates explained how the US War in Viet Nam depended on gendered and sexualized violence in Asia, Asian American women emphasized the transnational nature of that violence. “We, as Asian American women, cannot separate ourselves from our Asian counterparts,” Evelyn Yoshimura argued. 1 “Racism against them is too often racism against us…. The mentality that keeps Suzy Wong, Madame Butterfly and gookism alive turns human beings into racist murdering soldiers and also keeps Asian Americans from being able to live and feel like human beings.”
Add a footnote or two, explaining your thinking about something in your chosen excerpt.
Evelyn Yoshimura references the inseparability of Asian American women from Asian women across the world. How the Asian American woman might sometimes seem an isolated figure, distant from those who live in Asia. But how the very same violences that affect Asian American women affect, too, those women across the Pacific.
Ex 2: You can also add a footnote based on your own footnote!
It has never occurred to me that I might be isolated, myself, from Asia. I have always considered myself to be in relation to people, even if I’ve only been once or twice to Japan. There is something that keeps my attentions on Japanese media, Japanese people.
Ex 3: You might add a footnote to something you’d written in your assignments earlier. For example, if earlier you wrote about your parents’ immigration story:
I think what I was trying to say here was that in order for me to understand myself, in order for me to explain myself to anyone else, I first must start with the story of my parents. So I want to take this space to tell that story.
But remember! The source of your footnote will not be included in the essay. Only the footnote.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Learning Objectives
This lesson will help students
Recognize the structure and features of a variety of information based
text
Understand how information based texts are used and how they help
readers
Know strategies for reading information-based texts
Identify different types of information-based texts
2. Author’s purpose
Authors write for different purposes. They may
write
To entertain
To persuade
To inform
Sometimes the author's purpose (reason for
writing) affects what they write.
It's important for you to recognize that as you read.
3. What is the author’s purpose
For example, if an author is writing to persuade, then his/her writing
will contain only information that will encourage you to share his/her
beliefs.
Look at the reading passage on the next page. This writing is trying
to persuade you by sharing their opinion.
4. This writer believes that hunting animals is bad. His writing contains
only information to persuade you NOT to hunt.
Hunting, stalking, and killing of
animals, has been an American
tradition since early man lived here.
Today it exists as a "sport". There is no
longer an excuse or reason for stalking
and killing an animal in his or her
habitat. However, people continue to
hunt animals today and they feel they
have every right to continue to do so.
Animals need to be protected from
this attack by humans.
5. This writer believes that hunting animals is good. His writing contains
only information to persuade you to hunt.
I remember my first hunting trip with my dad. He
taught me to aim and shoot straight. I remember
how proud I was when I brought that first rabbit
home and the family feasted on my
"achievement".
Today I continue to tramp through the fields or the
woods. It brings back such fond memories of
those trips with Dad. And I still get a feeling of
satisfaction out of being able to bring something
home--whether a small rabbit or a graceful deer.
Hunting brings me great joy! I wish everyone had
an opportunity to experience that feeling of
accomplishment.
6. Think about the author’s purpose when
you are reading information text.
The author's purpose, or reason for
writing, affects the content of what
he/she writes. As a reader, you need
to become aware of that purpose so
that you can evaluate the content of
what the author is writing.
In other words…YOU CAN'T BELIEVE
EVERYTHING YOU READ!
Think about why the author is writing
as you read for information.
7. Writing that is meant to inform is called
information text. Some examples are:
newspaper or
magazine articles
information leaflets
websites
biographies
advertisements
reviews
literary nonfiction
documentaries
news clips
public service
announcements
manuals
maps
8. Remember, even when reading information text the
author may have a purpose. Read below. What is
this author’s purpose?
The Surgeon General has reported on the effects
smoking has on the health of adults. Furthermore
recent studies have found that individuals exposed
to second-hand smoke over a period of time also
suffer adverse affects to their health. Parents
should avoid exposing their children to cigarette
smoke and should educate their children on the
affects smoking can have on health.
