An acrostic poem is a poem where the first letter of each line spells out a word or phrase. The word or phrase can be anything the author chooses, such as a name. When writing acrostics, children often use their own name or a friend's name. To write an acrostic, the author decides what word to use, writes it vertically, then brainstorms words or phrases to use in the lines that start with each letter of the word.
