TSE 2016 - Finding and Evaluating the Performance Impact of Redundant Data Ac...Concordia University
This document discusses an approach for finding and evaluating the performance impact of redundant data access when applications are developed using object-relational mapping (ORM) frameworks. The approach involves static analysis of source code and database access methods, instrumentation of the application during testing to intercept database calls and SQL queries, and comparing the data needed by the application logic to the data actually requested from the database to identify redundant data anti-patterns. The approach is evaluated on three applications of different sizes, and results show that removing redundant data anti-patterns found by the approach can improve response time by up to 60%.

This document discusses using data analytics to improve various phases of load testing large-scale systems. It describes measuring performance counters and logs from prior tests to design more realistic new tests that include user-centric behaviors. Repetitiveness of performance counters is measured to determine when tests can be stopped early. Test results are stored in repositories with visualizations to help analysts quickly diagnose issues. Open challenges remain in better leveraging load testing for continuous performance improvement.
ICSE2014 - Detecting Performance Anti-patterns for Applications Developed usi...Concordia University
The document discusses performance anti-patterns that can occur when using object-relational mapping (ORM) frameworks. It presents a framework for detecting and ranking performance anti-patterns based on their impact. One example anti-pattern is retrieving excessive data from the database that is never used. The framework detects this by analyzing data usage and checking if retrieved data is ever accessed. Experiments on open-source systems show this anti-pattern can be detected and fixing it improves performance significantly with medium to large effect sizes. The ranks of anti-patterns are also consistent across different data scales.
This document presents a traditional approach to predicting hard queries using a keyword analyzer over databases. It proposes using association analysis to find the top k results from search keywords. An algorithm is proposed to find the top k searched keyword items from a combination of keywords in a probabilistic method that predicts results quickly. The proposed system uses a keyword analyzer and frequent pattern tree generation to efficiently rank the top k results over a corrupted database.

Supporting privacy protection in personalized web searchPapitha Velumani
This document proposes a personalized web search (PWS) framework called UPS that protects user privacy during search. UPS can generalize user profiles to different levels based on privacy requirements while balancing personalization utility and privacy risk. It presents two greedy algorithms, GreedyDP and GreedyIL, for runtime profile generalization and an online mechanism for deciding when to personalize queries. Experiments show UPS effectively protects privacy while maintaining personalization benefits and GreedyIL outperforms GreedyDP in efficiency.
This document discusses searching incomplete databases. Existing work addresses when data values on certain dimensions are unknown, but real-life data like from sensors may have missing dimension information as well. The proposed system develops a probabilistic framework to model similarity search on dimension incomplete data, allowing users to find similar objects with probability guarantees. It derives lower and upper bounds on the probability of similarity to efficiently filter irrelevant objects without examining all missing dimension combinations. Experimental results on real data demonstrate the approach's effectiveness and efficiency.

Comparative analysis between traditional aquaponics and reconstructed aquapon...bijceesjournal
The aquaponic system of planting is a method that does not require soil usage. It is a method that only needs water, fish, lava rocks (a substitute for soil), and plants. Aquaponic systems are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Its use not only helps to plant in small spaces but also helps reduce artificial chemical use and minimizes excess water use, as aquaponics consumes 90% less water than soil-based gardening. The study applied a descriptive and experimental design to assess and compare conventional and reconstructed aquaponic methods for reproducing tomatoes. The researchers created an observation checklist to determine the significant factors of the study. The study aims to determine the significant difference between traditional aquaponics and reconstructed aquaponics systems propagating tomatoes in terms of height, weight, girth, and number of fruits. The reconstructed aquaponics system’s higher growth yield results in a much more nourished crop than the traditional aquaponics system. It is superior in its number of fruits, height, weight, and girth measurement. Moreover, the reconstructed aquaponics system is proven to eliminate all the hindrances present in the traditional aquaponics system, which are overcrowding of fish, algae growth, pest problems, contaminated water, and dead fish.
Electric vehicle and photovoltaic advanced roles in enhancing the financial p...IJECEIAES
Climate change's impact on the planet forced the United Nations and governments to promote green energies and electric transportation. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. In addition, the proposed system allows for an isolated power setup without the need for a transmission line which enhances the safety of the electrical network
Design and optimization of ion propulsion dronebjmsejournal
Electric propulsion technology is widely used in many kinds of vehicles in recent years, and aircrafts are no exception. Technically, UAVs are electrically propelled but tend to produce a significant amount of noise and vibrations. Ion propulsion technology for drones is a potential solution to this problem. Ion propulsion technology is proven to be feasible in the earth’s atmosphere. The study presented in this article shows the design of EHD thrusters and power supply for ion propulsion drones along with performance optimization of high-voltage power supply for endurance in earth’s atmosphere.

efficient prediction of difficult keyword queries over databases
1. Efficient Prediction of Difficult Keyword Queries over Databases
Efficient Prediction of Difficult Keyword Queries over Databases
Keyword queries on databases provide easy access to data, but often suffer from low ranking
quality, i.e., low precision and/or recall, as shown in recent benchmarks. It would be useful to
identify queries that are likely to have low ranking quality to improve the user satisfaction. For
instance, the system may suggest to the user alternative queries for such hard queries. In this
paper, we analyze the characteristics of hard queries and propose a novel framework to measure
the degree of difficulty for a keyword query over a database, considering both the structure and
the content of the database and the query results. We evaluate our query difficulty prediction
model against two effectiveness benchmarks for popular keyword search ranking methods. Our
empirical results show that our model predicts the hard queries with high accuracy. Further, we
present a suite of optimizations to minimize the incurred time overhead.
There have been collaborative efforts to provide standard benchmarks and evaluation
platforms for keyword search methods over databases. One effort is the data-centric track
of INEX WorkshopQueries were provided by participants of the workshop. Another
effort is the series of Semantic Search Challenges (SemSearch). The results indicate that
even with structured data, finding the desired answers tokeyword queries is still a hard
task. More interestingly, looking closer to the ranking quality of the best performing
methods on both workshops.
DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEM:
Suffer from low ranking quality.
Performing very poorly on a subset of queries.
We set forth a principled framework and proposed novel algorithms to measure the
degree of the difficulty of a query over a DB, using the ranking robustness principle.
