Coaching is a collaborative process by a qualified professional working with an executive or manager who has a desire to develop and Accept positive thoughts and needed skills. Those skills might be development in: leadership, communication, inspiring followers, resolving conflicts, and/or clearly presenting information, just to name some work-related coaching areas. Coaches are people who have gone through specialized training, which differs from the work of consultants and therapists. There are a variety of different approaches to coaching. In my coaching practice, we use many tools and assessments to assist the coachee/client’s evidence-based development. Another approach is helping the client to be aware (mindful) in the workplace and personal situations as to what is occurring now (thoughts, feeling, and actions). The coach is a collaborative guide to the coachees/clients, focusing them to Accept professional and personal strengths and areas for development.
How you can build a successful team-

Tips To More Effective Coaching
1. Coaching is a developmental process that involves instructing, disciplining, and inspiring people to achieve more than they think possible.
2. There are four common attitudes managers take toward coaching - from not coaching at all to actively coaching by setting goals and holding people accountable.
3. Coaching can be directive, by giving advice, or non-directive, by asking questions to help people learn on their own. Non-directive coaching is more powerful and lasting.
4. Effective coaching involves asking open-ended questions, giving balanced feedback, creating action plans, and following up through accountability sessions.

COACHING THE COACHES

T he word “coach” is both a noun and a verb. As a noun it stipulates a person who instructs or informs others; as a verb it means the act of teaching or
training someone to do something. Coaches (the people) in sports, drama, and
music coach (the action) participants to greater performance by defining what
should be done, observing what is done, and offering feedback on what will be
done. In business settings, coaches play similar roles. They help aspiring managers
learn what should be done by offering pointers, learn what is done by observation,
and improve what will be done by providing feedback. Management coaching
may occur at many levels of a company, from CEO to line supervisor. Each coach
has a unique style and approach, but coaches may learn and adapt techniques
that help them be better at what they do. This chapter presents elements of a
coaching philosophy and steps in a coaching process that have been used in mul-
tiple settings to help aspiring managers manage better.
Philosophy
Coaching does not mean doing for others, but means helping others to get things
done. Coaches help athletes play the game better, even if they do not personally
play the game. Player coaches generally do not perform as well as sideline coaches.
Management coaches may not be the best managers, but they must be observers of
good management and motivators for good communication. In an early coaching
assignment, I observed a leader in team meetings. I paid attention to a few things,

such as how did he interact with people before the meeting? Was his style formal or
informal? Did people approach him or not? How did he manage the meeting? Did
he follow an agenda? How did he make decisions? How did he treat others during
the meeting? How did he follow up after the meeting? Did he follow up on actions
taken with regard to decisions made during the meeting? The ability to make these
subtle observations comes from having “your head on a swivel” and examining the
nuances of behaviors and their consequences. With this data, I then engaged him
in a conversation on what he did and what he could do to reach his goals.
Coaches earn their credibility by having a history of success. Coaching is both
a learned art from experience and a disciplined science from education. Becoming
a legitimate coach is a Catch-22: those you coach must have confidence in you, yet
you don’t earn confidence until you have coached others. Early coaching experi-

Defining the Generative Moment
Generative moments can be thought of as the
peak of a coaching session. A generative
moment can be filled with the high energy that
comes from being ready to do something new or
the peaceful calm that comes with a new way of
thinking.
Generative moments occur when clients are
aroused along the path of change and growth.

We call these “generative” because they inspire
clients to generate new ideas, perspectives, or
insights. They may also uncover capacities, which
can lead to bold actions that can positively alter a
client’s future (Bushe, 2007). Generative moments
are mini transformations that energize both coach
and client and catalyze the next stage of the
client’s progress.

they emerge as things that clients want less of
(aversive indicators), things that clients want more
