Becoming a STAR Learner Created by Everett T. Shupe II, MBA, Certified Association Executive (CAE) Certified Meeting Professional (CMP)
A STAR Learner is……. Strategic Thoughtful Responsible
Strategic Learner Actions Prepare a professional development plan for self and set goals that are challenging yet obtainable. Select to attend programs that meet my professional development goals. Take risks by attending programs I would not normally attend that will gently nudge him or her out of my comfort zone. Read all emails, faxes and mail that come across my desk. Read about the latest trends inside and outside of the meetings industry. Take the next step that increases my involvement in professional organizations to the next level.
Thoughtful Learner Actions Let others know about my professional development needs. Fill out surveys, evaluations & Pre-program questionnaires because I know that Program Planners actually use this to tailor programs that will meet my needs. Research speakers and facilitators that I see on program agendas to learn more about the perspectives and experience they bring to the sessions I attend. Actively participate and ask questions. Gain new perspectives by interacting with persons outside of my circle of friends. Enjoy the honest feedback & companionship of those friends, colleagues and professional coach inside my circle.
Responsible Learning Actions Reflect on all that I have learned, constantly refining how lessons learned can be useful in my day-to-day activities. Share what I have learned with other colleagues. Use what I have learned to help others in the industry by becoming a mentor. Model what I have learned and challenge every-day industry practices that may be outdated, inconsistent, or even unethical. Careful in the ways that I offer feedback in order to nurture and care for those new learners and leaders in the industry. If I cannot do all of this because I am too busy, then I will enroll in a time management class or find a professional coach who can help me manage my time.
Learning Principles You should develop a set of principles that help guide you as you are making important decisions that affect what you learn, how you learn, why you learn, etc. Examples of Learning Principles Learning is an active and participatory process. Learning is non-linear and dynamic. Relationships between individuals support the learning process. Reflective practices are a strong component of learning.
Learner Objectives Everyone is motivated differently to attend a meeting, conference or training. Individuals also have different needs that they would like met. Why do you attend meetings and what you would like to take away. Think about all aspects of yourself: mind, heart, body and soul.
