The present investigation entitled “Studies on genetic variability in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)” was carried out at the UCOA, vegetable research farm, Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda during rabi 2015-16 to evaluate tomato genotypes. The experiment was laid out in CRD with three replications. Total 20 genotypes including check cultivar were evaluated for horticultural Traits contributing yield and quality (suitable for processing) .There is a wide variability in different genotypes in tomato. Traits i.e. Number of primary branches per plant, Days to first fruit harvest, Plant height (cm),number of fruits per cluster, number fruits per plant, average fruit weight (gm), equatorial diameter of fruit (cm), polar diameter of fruit (cm), number of locules per fruit, pericarp thickness (mm), fruit pH, Fruit TSS (0brix), days to last fruit harvest and average yield per plant (kg) were studied during the investigation Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for all the characters under study during the investigation. High Phenotypic and Genotypic coefficient of variation were detected for characters like number of fruits per plant, number of locules per fruit, pericarp thickness and average yield per plant. High heritability coupled with genetic gain were recorded for number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, number of locules per fruit and average yield per plant. Therefore these characters also show some scope for improvement through selection. A highly significant and positive phenotypic and genotypic correlation were found in number of fruits per cluster, plant height, number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight.

This study aims to determine the effect of Glomus mosseae mycorrhizae dose and varieties on growth and yield of chili (Capsicum annum. L) on Entisol soil. This research was conducted at the UNSYIAH Experimental Garden, Banda Aceh. The design used in this study is factorial randomized block design (RBD). The first factor in this study is the dose of mycorrhizal Glomus mosseae (D) consisting of 4 levels, namely: D0= without mycorrhiza, D1= mycorrhiza Glomus mosseae 5g plant-1, D2= mycorrhiza Glomus mosseae 10g plant-1, and D3= mycorrhiza Glomus mosseae 15g plant-1. The second factor is chili variety (V) consisting of 3 levels, namely: PM 999 varieties, Lado F1 varieties, varieties CTH-01. The variables observed were growth parameters, chili yield, total N-content and P-available on Entisol soil and the percentage of mycorrhizal infected roots. The results showed that mycorrhizal doses were able to increase the value of N-total and P-available on the soil and can improve plant growth and yield, the use of mycorrhizal doses of 15 g tan-1 generally results in better growth and yield of chilli compared to other doses, while based on the results of research CTH-01 varieties affect the growth and yield of chili plants. There is an interaction between mycorrhizal doses with chilli varieties on growth parameters and chili yield.

The effect of poultry droppings on growth and fruit yield of okra was evaluated during 2013 and 2014 cropping seasons at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching and Research Farm Mokwa Sub- Station (90181N and 504E) with altitude of 378.0 m above the sea level of the Southern Guinea Savanna Zone of Nigeria. The trial was conducted using Randomized Complete Block Design which consisted of ten (10) treatment combinations with three replications. Different rates of poultry droppings (t ha-1); 0 (No application), 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, 15 t ha-1 and 20 t ha-1 with two okra varieties, LD 88- 1 and Kukurasungi Local were used. Data was taken from five sampled plants per plot on parameters such as average plant height per plant (cm), number of leaves per plant, number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per plant, fruit length (cm) and green fruit yield (t ha-1). Results from this study showed that in the two years trial LD 88- 1 variety performed better than Kukurasungi Local and therefore can be used for okra production within the study area. Poultry droppings rate of 15 t ha-1 increased the fruit yield. Therefore, this can be applied as part of cultural treatment.
Comparative study of chemical fungicides for the management of citrus gummosi...AI Publications
Field experiment was conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mehsana, Gujarat to test the efficacy of various chemical treatments for the control of gummosis (Phytophthora nicotianae var. parasitica) of Citrus during the year 2017-2019. Ten -year-old acid lime (Kagzi lime) trees were treated with Bordeaux paste and fosetyl Al. Bordeaux paste application and fosetyl Al significantly reduced gummosis incidence. It can be concluded that for effective control of gummosis, citrus trees may be treated with Bordeaux paste on the main trunk or foliar spray of fosetyl Al gave average 33.33 % and 30.00 % disease index, respectively during the three-year experiments.

Fall armyworm infestation and management practices on maize fields of smallho...INNS PUBNET
Fall armyworm (FAW) is native to America and is currently affecting maize production in different parts of Africa, and recently reported in Tanzania. In the present study, FAW infestation levels and their associated management practices were investigated in 90 maize fields in the 18 villages in Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions. Infestation levels were assessed using a scale of 0 (no damage) to 9 (100% damage), while the management practices information was collected through a survey and questionnaires from 210 maize growing farmers in the 18 villages. Results showed that all fields were infested by FAW at low (1-4) to moderate (5-7) damage levels. Arusha scored the highest (66.59% and 5.422) significant mean incidence and severity (P<0.05) respectively, followed by Kilimanjaro (52.96%, 4.756) and Manyara (52.64%, 3.989) regions. Variation in damage levels was also observed among villages, with means incidences ranging between 35.57% and 79.55%, and mean severity ranging between 2.333 and 7.267. Variation between regions and villages can be associated with farmer’s knowledge and FAW management practices. About 84.3% of farmers reported synthetic pesticides as the main management option, although the majority did not effectively apply them. Farmer’s recommendations include awareness creation on the FAW management, provision of effective pesticides and resistant maize varieties, and government intervention in the overall management of FAW. From the findings it is evident that sustainable integrated management strategies against FAW is urgent needed and this study serves as a stepping stone for the development of sustainable management options.

A field experiment was conducted for two successive seasons 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 with four replicates at the experimental farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Omdurman Islamic University to determine the effect of inoculation and co-inoculation of symbiotic nitrogen fixing and phosphate solubilizing bacteria on fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) growth and yield. Fenugreek plant variety Kodab was used. Two bacterial strains Sinorhizobium meliloti strain TAL380 and Bacillus megatherium var. phosphaticum strain (BMP), each alone or in combination. Control plants were kept for comparison. The following measurements were taken per plant: number of nodules, dry weight of nodules, shoots and roots, plant height, pod length, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, 1000 seed weight and yield. Results showed that inoculation with TAL380 and BMP each alone significantly increased nodulation and nodule dry weight compared to the control. Inoculation with BMP significantly increased root dry weight, when inoculation with TAL380 significantly increased shoot dry weight and plant height, co-inoculation significantly increased root and shoot dry weight compared to the control. The two bacterial inoculations each alone or in combination significantly increased number of pods and insignificantly increased number of seeds per pod and 1000 seed weight at both seasons. There was no effect of inoculation with bacteria on pod length. Co-inoculation significantly increased fenugreek seed yield at both seasons compared to the control.
Growth and yield of 12 accessions of Pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) as influenced ...Innspub Net
Pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) has gained important commercial status in Nigeria due to its nutritional, medicinal and health benefits. In recent times, there is a growing preference for pure organic food due to the envisaged health and environmental benefits. Thus, a study was carried out on 12 selected accessions of pawpaw evaluated under three poultry manure (PM) application rates at the Department of Crop Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The field experiment was a split plot in randomized complete block design of three replications. The main plot treatment was three PM application rates (0, 5 and 10 t ha-1) and the sub-plot treatment was 12 accessions of pawpaw. Accession Ijm-Cl-Ro significantly (p<0.05) produced the tallest plants (71.7, 87.3, 108.3, 127.4 and 150.0cm) at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 months after transplanting (MAT), respectively. It had the greatest number of fruits (9.3) at 11 months after the onset of fruit formation, maximum fruit weight (7.15kg) and the highest fruit yield (23.83 t ha-1). Increasing PM rate increased growth traits of the pawpaw plants. Interaction of manure rate × accession on most of the growth attributes varied greatly, but showed no significant difference on yield traits. The accession Ijm-Cl-Ro with the application of 10 t ha-1 of PM which produced the best growth and highest fruit yield is recommended for improved productivity of pawpaw. The control plot produced no fruit throughout the study period, suggesting that manure application is crucial for sustained yield of pawpaw in the study area.

The present study was conducted to investigate some flowering, yield and fruit quality (fruit physical and chemical properties) measurements of twelve years old Balady mango seedling trees grown in clay- loamy soil under surface irrigation system of private orchard located at Esna district, Luxor Governorate as affected by Parlatoria oleae infestation rate during two successive experimental seasons through duration from early September 2016 till mid August 2018 years. Data obtained during both (2016/2017) and (2017/2018) seasons revealed that dates of first, full bloom and harvesting took place earlier in the uninfested trees (control) as compared to the analogous measurements of either slightly or severely infested ones. Moreover, two yield parameters i.e., number and weight (kg.) of mature fruits harvested per each individual tree were obviously decreased by both P. oleae infestation rates as compared to those of the uninfested trees (control). As for the impact on both fruit physical and chemical characteristics, the uninfested trees exhibited an obvious improve in (average fruit dimensions, volume and weight) and (total soluble solids, total soluble solids / acidity ratio, total sugars, reducing sugars and sucrose contents) associated with lower total acidity %. On the other side, the heavily P. oleae infested trees showed significantly the highest reduction in all studied yield and fruit qualities measurements, except with total acidity %, whereas the trend took the other way around as compared to the free and slightly infested trees. Besides, P. oleae was more active through autumn months particularly during October and November of 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. However, the reverse was true during winter months whereas the least values of P. oleae total population density were detected in both seasons, regardless of infestation rate. Concerning, the relationship between the differences in reduction % in a given desirable parameter from one hand and different infestation rate from the other estimated values of the simple correlation and regression coefficient pointed out the highly significant positive relationship between the increase of one insect per leaf and the increase in reduction of all tested yield and fruit qualitites measurements, except total acidity percentage.
Diversity of drought tolerance and seed yield in sunflower (Helianthus annuus...Innspub Net
Randomized complete block design with four replications in two drought and non-drought environments was used for this study. Drought resistance indices were calculated based on seed yield in stress and non-stress conditions. The results showed that GMP and STI were the best drought resistance indices so had the positive and significant correlation with Yp and Ys. Three dimensional graph showed that RFG5*AF80, G-543 and Farokh were the drought resistant hybrids. These hybrids had the highest amount of Yp, Ys, GMP and STI that revealed the highest yield potential as well as drought tolerance in these genotypes. Because of that these hybrids have promised potential to cultivate in drought prone environments. Regression analysis revealed that the traits grain filling rate, grain filling duration and water use efficiency accounted for 97.0% of total variation exist in seed yield. Path coefficient analysis demonstrated the highest and positive direct effect of grain filling rate and grain filling duration on seed yield in sunflower hybrids. Water use efficiency had low direct effect while high indirect effects via grain filling duration on seed yield. Therefore, the study revealed the importance of total grain filling rate and grain filling duration as indirect selection criteria for genetic improvement of seed yield in sunflower breeding programs especially in early generations. On the other hand, indirect effects of water use efficiency through grain filling duration on seed yield have promising result in selection programs. The five treatments used in the experiment were T. vogelii, A. sativum, S. incanum, dimethoate and control. Wingless adult female aphids were inoculated three weeks after transplanting of seedlings. Spraying and data collection were done weekly for four weeks. Data was collected on aphid nymph and adult counts on the third leaf from the aerial plant part of randomly selected plants from each treatment for 24 hours after the application of treatments and total plant fresh weight per each treatment. There were significant differences (p<0.05)><0.05) on the yield of rape. It was concluded that T. vogelii, S. incanum and A. sativum aqueous crude extracts have some pesticidal effects on aphid in rape production.

The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with seven treatments such as weed free, weedy check, pendimethalin 2.5L/ha, pendimethalin 2.5L/ha + clodinofop 400 g/ha, pendimethalin 2.5L/ha + sulfosulfuron 32.5g/ha , pendimethalin 2.5L/ha + pinoxaden 1000 ml/ ha, pendimethalin 2.5L/ha + atlantis 400g/ha and replicated thrice. Results revealed that pendimethalin 2.5 L/ha + atlantis 400g/ha was found effective to control weed population and produced higher number of grains per ear and enhanced grain yield upto 62.3 per cent over weedy check.
Screening of Guava genotypes to natural infestation of fruit flies (Diptera:T...IJEAB
The infesting species and their infestation indices of fruit flies were determined for guava genotypes (Psidium guajava L.),grown in River Nile, Sennar and North Kordofan States during the period from June to August 2010 .Twenty genotypes were selected from each state to be evaluated ,where ten mature fruits from each genotypes were harvested randomly from insecticide unsprayed trees. Fruits were brought to the laboratory and placed in individual plastic vials containing sand at the bottom to obtain the pupae. Infestation indices were estimated by means of total number of pupae/fruit. Pupal viability was then calculated based on the percentage of pupae resulted in fly emergence. Data was analyzed using analysis of variance and Duncan multiple range test for mean separations. Results showed that Guava fruits were infested by four fruit fly species Ceratitis cosyra, C.quinaira, C capitata and Bactrocera dorsalis constitute (82.2), (0.8), (16.7), (0.3% ) and 28.35 ,0.01 ,10.1 and 61.56% in River Nile and Sennar States respectively. While in North Kordofan State guava fruits were infested by C.cosyra, C.capitat and B.dorsalis 98.4,0.4 and 1.2% respectively. All the evaluated genotypes in River Nile and Sennar States were infested by the fruit fly with varying degrees only two genotypes 15 red flesh fruit and 19 white flesh fruit in Kordofan state were found free from fruit fly infestation. Infestation was much higher in Sennar and River Nile states (32 and 29 pupae/fruit) respectively compared to North Kordofan (1.6 pupae/fruit).The higher infestation rate occurred in ripe guava fruits (33) compared to 18 and 6 pupae/fruit in mature green and immature green fruit respectively.

Fall armyworm (FAW) is native to America and is currently affecting maize production in different parts of Africa, and recently reported in Tanzania. In the present study, FAW infestation levels and their associated management practices were investigated in 90 maize fields in the 18 villages in Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions. Infestation levels were assessed using a scale of 0 (no damage) to 9 (100% damage), while the management practices information was collected through a survey and questionnaires from 210 maize growing farmers in the 18 villages. Results showed that all fields were infested by FAW at low (1-4) to moderate (5-7) damage levels. Arusha scored the highest (66.59% and 5.422) significant mean incidence and severity (P<0.05) respectively, followed by Kilimanjaro (52.96%, 4.756) and Manyara (52.64%, 3.989) regions. Variation in damage levels was also observed among villages, with means incidences ranging between 35.57% and 79.55%, and mean severity ranging between 2.333 and 7.267. Variation between regions and villages can be associated with farmer’s knowledge and FAW management practices. About 84.3% of farmers reported synthetic pesticides as the main management option, although the majority did not effectively apply them. Farmer’s recommendations include awareness creation on the FAW management, provision of effective pesticides and resistant maize varieties, and government intervention in the overall management of FAW. From the findings it is evident that sustainable integrated management strategies against FAW is urgent needed and this study serves as a stepping stone for the development of sustainable management options.

A field experiment was conducted for two successive seasons 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 with four replicates at the experimental farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Omdurman Islamic University to determine the effect of inoculation and co-inoculation of symbiotic nitrogen fixing and phosphate solubilizing bacteria on fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) growth and yield. Fenugreek plant variety Kodab was used. Two bacterial strains Sinorhizobium meliloti strain TAL380 and Bacillus megatherium var. phosphaticum strain (BMP), each alone or in combination. Control plants were kept for comparison. The following measurements were taken per plant: number of nodules, dry weight of nodules, shoots and roots, plant height, pod length, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, 1000 seed weight and yield. Results showed that inoculation with TAL380 and BMP each alone significantly increased nodulation and nodule dry weight compared to the control. Inoculation with BMP significantly increased root dry weight, when inoculation with TAL380 significantly increased shoot dry weight and plant height, co-inoculation significantly increased root and shoot dry weight compared to the control. The two bacterial inoculations each alone or in combination significantly increased number of pods and insignificantly increased number of seeds per pod and 1000 seed weight at both seasons. There was no effect of inoculation with bacteria on pod length. Co-inoculation significantly increased fenugreek seed yield at both seasons compared to the control.

Pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) has gained important commercial status in Nigeria due to its nutritional, medicinal and health benefits. In recent times, there is a growing preference for pure organic food due to the envisaged health and environmental benefits. Thus, a study was carried out on 12 selected accessions of pawpaw evaluated under three poultry manure (PM) application rates at the Department of Crop Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The field experiment was a split plot in randomized complete block design of three replications. The main plot treatment was three PM application rates (0, 5 and 10 t ha-1) and the sub-plot treatment was 12 accessions of pawpaw. Accession Ijm-Cl-Ro significantly (p<0.05) produced the tallest plants (71.7, 87.3, 108.3, 127.4 and 150.0cm) at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 months after transplanting (MAT), respectively. It had the greatest number of fruits (9.3) at 11 months after the onset of fruit formation, maximum fruit weight (7.15kg) and the highest fruit yield (23.83 t ha-1). Increasing PM rate increased growth traits of the pawpaw plants. Interaction of manure rate × accession on most of the growth attributes varied greatly, but showed no significant difference on yield traits. The accession Ijm-Cl-Ro with the application of 10 t ha-1 of PM which produced the best growth and highest fruit yield is recommended for improved productivity of pawpaw. The control plot produced no fruit throughout the study period, suggesting that manure application is crucial for sustained yield of pawpaw in the study area.

The present study was conducted to investigate some flowering, yield and fruit quality (fruit physical and chemical properties) measurements of twelve years old Balady mango seedling trees grown in clay- loamy soil under surface irrigation system of private orchard located at Esna district, Luxor Governorate as affected by Parlatoria oleae infestation rate during two successive experimental seasons through duration from early September 2016 till mid August 2018 years. Data obtained during both (2016/2017) and (2017/2018) seasons revealed that dates of first, full bloom and harvesting took place earlier in the uninfested trees (control) as compared to the analogous measurements of either slightly or severely infested ones. Moreover, two yield parameters i.e., number and weight (kg.) of mature fruits harvested per each individual tree were obviously decreased by both P. oleae infestation rates as compared to those of the uninfested trees (control). As for the impact on both fruit physical and chemical characteristics, the uninfested trees exhibited an obvious improve in (average fruit dimensions, volume and weight) and (total soluble solids, total soluble solids / acidity ratio, total sugars, reducing sugars and sucrose contents) associated with lower total acidity %. On the other side, the heavily P. oleae infested trees showed significantly the highest reduction in all studied yield and fruit qualities measurements, except with total acidity %, whereas the trend took the other way around as compared to the free and slightly infested trees. Besides, P. oleae was more active through autumn months particularly during October and November of 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. However, the reverse was true during winter months whereas the least values of P. oleae total population density were detected in both seasons, regardless of infestation rate. Concerning, the relationship between the differences in reduction % in a given desirable parameter from one hand and different infestation rate from the other estimated values of the simple correlation and regression coefficient pointed out the highly significant positive relationship between the increase of one insect per leaf and the increase in reduction of all tested yield and fruit qualitites measurements, except total acidity percentage.
Diversity of drought tolerance and seed yield in sunflower (Helianthus annuus...Innspub Net
Randomized complete block design with four replications in two drought and non-drought environments was used for this study. Drought resistance indices were calculated based on seed yield in stress and non-stress conditions. The results showed that GMP and STI were the best drought resistance indices so had the positive and significant correlation with Yp and Ys. Three dimensional graph showed that RFG5*AF80, G-543 and Farokh were the drought resistant hybrids. These hybrids had the highest amount of Yp, Ys, GMP and STI that revealed the highest yield potential as well as drought tolerance in these genotypes. Because of that these hybrids have promised potential to cultivate in drought prone environments. Regression analysis revealed that the traits grain filling rate, grain filling duration and water use efficiency accounted for 97.0% of total variation exist in seed yield. Path coefficient analysis demonstrated the highest and positive direct effect of grain filling rate and grain filling duration on seed yield in sunflower hybrids. Water use efficiency had low direct effect while high indirect effects via grain filling duration on seed yield. Therefore, the study revealed the importance of total grain filling rate and grain filling duration as indirect selection criteria for genetic improvement of seed yield in sunflower breeding programs especially in early generations. On the other hand, indirect effects of water use efficiency through grain filling duration on seed yield have promising result in selection programs. The five treatments used in the experiment were T. vogelii, A. sativum, S. incanum, dimethoate and control. Wingless adult female aphids were inoculated three weeks after transplanting of seedlings. Spraying and data collection were done weekly for four weeks. Data was collected on aphid nymph and adult counts on the third leaf from the aerial plant part of randomly selected plants from each treatment for 24 hours after the application of treatments and total plant fresh weight per each treatment. There were significant differences (p<0.05)><0.05) on the yield of rape. It was concluded that T. vogelii, S. incanum and A. sativum aqueous crude extracts have some pesticidal effects on aphid in rape production.

This review paper evaluates different weed management practices in different crops and suggests effective weed control methods for

infestation of Helicoverpa armigera in the Institute for Agricultural Research farm (IAR), Samaru,
Zaria during the dry season farming of 2019. The experimental treatments consisted of four levels
of plant spacings (15cm, 30cm, 45cm and 60cm) and four levels of Poultry manure (0 tha-1, 4 tha-1,
8 tha-1 and 12 tha-1).The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design and
replicated thrice. Data was subjected to ANOVA and means separated with LSD at 5% level of
probability. Combined analysis of variance revealed significant differences in fruit number and
damage using poultry manure. However, high yield per stand (5.13) and damage (2.23) was
observed at 8 tha-1. On plant spacing, 45cm intra-spacing gave relatively high number of fruit (4.93)
and damage (2.08) compared to other spaces even though there was no significant differences
among the means. This implied that, such levels of poultry manure increased both fruit number
and fruit damage in tomato grown in Samaru, Zaria. Hence other integrated measures such as
application of novel insecticides, inter-cropping and date of planting inter-alia may be incorporated
to reduce damage due to tomato fruit borer induced by H.armigera for optimum yield in tomato
production.

3. INTRODUCTION
• Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.) is the second most important vegetable crop grown in the world after potato
(Degri and Sani, 2015).
• Nigeria is one of the largest consumers of vegetables in sub-Saharan Africa with about 22 kg per capita (Ogundari
and Agrifola, 2013). consumption in Nigeria stands at 2.3 million tonnes of tomato annually (GEMS, 2019).
• The crop is more susceptible to pest attack more than other vegetable crops, mainly because of its tenderness and
softness. Tomato is devastated by an array of pests, however, the major damage is caused by the Tomato Fruit
Borer (Sajjad, 2011).
• Tomato Fruit Borer (TFB) Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Nuctudea) is one of the serious pest of
tomato. The insect is polyphagy, with high mobility, high fecundity and facultative diapauses. The newly hatched
larvae bores into the fruit and feed inside, thereby making fruit unfit for human consumption and marketing
(Amin, Chakma, Alam, Hussain and Ge, 2016).
• Severe infection causes necrosis to the leaf chlorophillus tissue, suppresses tomato flower to bloom (Jallow, 2001).
The insect causes widespread economic damage to tomato farms with severe yield loss of up to 30 – 40 %.
Infestation range of H. armigera was up to 46. 85 % in Bangaledesh and 35 % in India (Chakraborthy, Santosh and
Chakravathy, 2009).
• Chemical control is the primary management approach used for the control of insect pest in tomato crop.
However, indiscriminate and excessive use of insecticides causes resistance to insects, pest resurgence,
environmental contamination, health hazard and in some cases, promote the build- up of toxic residues in fruits.
Since the fruits are eaten raw in salads, the health and environmental hazards associated with insecticides should
be avoided (Degri and Mai Lafiya, 2013).
• The current interest in integrated pest control and organic agriculture therefore need alternative control measures
that are effective, affordable, adoptable and safe to users and consumers. The use of cultural method such as
spacing and poultry manure is one of such alternatives to insecticides.
• The study aimed at examining the effect of poultry manure and plant spacing on incidence of Tomato Fruit Borer
as means of IPM for sustainable production.
4. Materials and Methods
• The experiment was conducted in Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu
Bello University Zaria farm in 2019.
• Treatments comprised of four plant spaces (15cm, 30cm, 45cm and 60cm) and
poultry manure (at rates of 0 tha-1, 4 tha-1, 8 tha-1 and 12 tha-1 )respectively.
• The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design replicated three
times, giving a total of 96 plots in a plot size of 27m2.
• UC82B variety of tomato was used . It was raised in nursery for three weeks and
therefore, transplanted to the field at four stand spacing followed by irrigation
(two times a week).
• Before flowering, ten stands were randomly selected and tagged in each plot for
data collection on number of fruits and damage. On fruit set, stands were
observed weekly for presence of H. armigera and number of fruits.
• Data on fruit number and damage were recorded weekly for five weeks by
counting the number of healthy fruits and fruits with tunnel or holes.
• Data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using the Gen Stat software
package 14th Edition. Means were separated using LSD test at 5 % level of
probability.
5. Result

8. DISCUSSION
• The investigation evidently proved that poultry manure increased
number of fruits and damage at 8 tha-1 and showed that spacing
had no influence on yield performance and damage due to TFB
induced by H. armigera.
• Karim, (2009) reported that crop fertilization has effect on
susceptibility of plant to insect pest attack.
• Saliou et al., 2010 reported 24 % reduction of loss due to H.
armigera through application of organic manure.
• Wegayehu et al., 2013, also noted a positive effect of insect on
closely spaced vegetable crops. Such findings were not in
agreement with the present study where spacing did not show any
significant effect on H. armigera infestation. This may be as a result
of the differences in location, variety used, date of planting,
composition of organic matter used and soil type among others.

9. CONCLUSION
• Poultry manure and plant spacing may be
incorporated into IPM approach for production of
tomato and management of TFB.
• There may be a need to incorporate other IPM
measures such as application of novel
insecticides, intercropping and date of planting
among others for sustainable management.
