Rice production is dependent on temperature, floods, droughts and precipitation which are all affected by climate change. A rise in temperature of 2-4°C can result in a 15% reduction in rice yields, and 17-40% reduction in rainfed areas. Higher temperatures also cause heat stress and sterility in rice. Floods and waterlogging from increased rainfall can submerge crops, while droughts from decreased rainfall cause moisture stress and reduce tillering, plant height and spikelet fertility. Climate change is negatively impacting rice production in developing countries and arid zones, with potential solutions including controlling deforestation and building dams.
