DEFINITIONS:
Social functions of education are roles performed by education to
mould the individuals for a variety of social roles and development
of personality
Education may be defined as the process whereby the social
heritage of a group of people is passed on from one generation to
the next as well as the process by which the child becomes
socialized.
SOCIALISATION
Through education, the child is able to develop reasoning in social relations, cultivates
social virtues and thus becomes socially efficient
People have no knowledge about their society and must learn the way their society
functions. As children grow up they must be introduced to the society in which they are
going to live in
The society inculcates(to teach and impress by frequent repetitions or admonitions)
norms, values and skills that would fit the individual into the society through education.
The school also exposes people to social norms and values that are beyond those available
for learning in the family and other social groups.
Through education the child is able to develop reasoning in social relations ,cultivates
social virtues and thus become socially efficient .
DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONALITY
Education helps in the development of qualities of an individual such as physical,
mental and emotional make-up as well as his/her temperament and character.
Learner’s personality is also developed indirectly when he is encouraged to form
his or her own values and attitudes by studying outstanding people in history and
literature
The habits ,traits ,attitudes and ideals of individual is patterned by process of
education.
CHILDREN PLAYING TOGETHER AT
SCHOOL(PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT)
PLAYING TOGETHER HELPS
LEARNERS TO STAY PHYSICALLY
STABLE AS WELL AS SOCIALISE
WITH EACH OTHER
MENTAL DEVELOPMENT
AS CHILDREN WORK
TOGETHER TO COMPLETE
PUZZLES THEY DEVELOP
COGNITIVELY BECAUSE THEY
HAVE TO ARRANGE THEM IN
A THOROUGH MANNER
SOCIAL CONTROL
Education plays a vital role in regulating individual behavior through
transmitting a way of life and communicating ideas and values to the
new generations.
Through the process of education ,the society regulates the
behaviour of its members and enforces conformity to its norms.
Formal education in modern societies communicate ideas and values
which play a part in regulating behaviour.
SOCIAL INTEGRATION
Education integrates people into the broader society by giving
particular qualities to its values.
The school curriculum ,its extra-curricular activities and the informal
relationship between students and the school staff communicates
certain values and social skills such as cooperation or team-spirit,
obedience and fair play.
DETERMINATION OF STATUS
The level of education that someone has is a good indicator of socio-
economic status ,from lower ranking to higher ranking and education
leads to an economic opportunity.
It is through higher education that young people get higher paying
jobs /higher status jobs than their parents.
People who are highly or well educated are recognized in the society
and are given the utmost respect .
PROVISION OF ROUTE FOR SOCIAL
MOBILITY
Educational qualifications increasingly form the base of social status and
social mobility allocation to individuals .Individuals are able to shift from
one social status to another because of the education they have .
 Uneducated people can never contest for positions such as being a
member of parliament because no one would ever want to vote and to be
represented by an illiterate person .Therefore people need to be educated
in order to accomplish all this .
Education tends to generate vertical social mobility for those with higher
abilities by placing them in higher positions by increasing their earning
power and by preparing them for higher status occupation than that of
their parents.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Development as seen from the psychological perspective includes all
the processes and changes whereby individuals adapt to their
environment.
Education therefore helps us adapt to the environment we live in and
learn different things from people we live with .
Education trains the individuals in skills that are required by the
economy
Literacy stimulates economic and social development
