There are always moments in our lives when we wish we could be in a
better place, a better position, a better environment or have a better this or that.
No doubt that no one is perfect but being human beings, we wish our world is
perfect and we feel disappointed when we realise it is not.
I was quite a weak child when I was born, and at age two, I was found to
be suffering from asthma. At such a young age, I did not understand what
suffering meant but the ones who suffered the most were my loving parents.
One could tell the worried looks on their faces but not once did they complain
and they would do just about anything to find ways for their little girl to get
better. I could not even recall undergoing the critical moments during my
asthmatic attacks. There were just vague memories of being in school one
moment, and the next, lying on the back seat of my father’s car, being driven to
the hospital.
My asthma attacks were really bad when I was in school. Once, during
recess, I sort of lost consciousness due to breathing difficulties. What a
commotion it caused. The next thing I knew, I was lying in a hospital bed.
By age seven, I had been in and out the hospital so often that I somehow
had the idea that the hospital was my second home. I got used to it and made
friends with the doctors and nurses. Some of their faces and smiles are still
vivid in my mind. I also remember dancing happily around the corridors of the
hospital while waiting for my hospital meal. Once, I even threw up on my
father’s hand while he held me on the way back home. Ah, to be carefree like a
child!
What I remember most though were the moments when my classmates
played sports, all I could do was just sit and watch. Then, when my sister
joined our friends for rope skipping in the playground, I would be confined at
home, forced to look only from inside due to my condition. On top of that, I
was not allowed to join them.
I was also not allowed to eat or drink anything cold such as ice cream,
jelly, or even certain type of fruits. Oh, how I longed to have them during those
extremely hot days. Pets were also strictly forbidden. It was a big no-no to go
near or touch rabbits or small animals as my parents were afraid that their hair
would trigger an attack.
Every day, I was made to take a very bitter cough mixture. The
consequences would be dire if I were to skip even once. Thankfully, all these
were not to last. By age 12, my body managed to somehow overcome the
asthma and I recovered completely. It was a miracle and I could not thank
enough those who had helped me. Doctors had told my parents that if I did not
overcome the illness by that age, I would have had it for life.
Thankfully today, I could do everything a normal person could –

although I’m not as agile or athletic as those with a healthy childhood. I could
now enjoy having pets and eat or drink anything I want without fear of falling
ill. I remember eating my first whole apple when I was 13. To me then, that
was a luxury! In life, we tend to forget how fortunate we are. Too much focus
is given on what we do not have rather than what we have. The grass is always 45
greener on the other side!
Just recently I was undergoing a particularly dry stint in my business.
That gave me sleepless nights and as I pondered on how to move forward,
suddenly it all came back to me. I was reminded of my asthmatic childhood
and the importance of being grateful for what I have. Even though I am going 50
through a difficult time, it is alright because I am no longer sick. Tough times
do not last, but tough people do.

Read the following poem Nature and answer the questions that follow.
We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring.
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields –
Magnificiently.
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
And there is no sound but the swish of water in the
gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.
Also there are the days when leaves fade from off
guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.
But best of all there are the days when the mango and
the logwood blossom
When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the
scent of honey,
When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest
breath of air,
When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow
stars
And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

  • 13. SULIT 10 1119/2 Section C [25 marks] [Time suggested: 50 minutes] Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 There are always moments in our lives when we wish we could be in a better place, a better position, a better environment or have a better this or that. No doubt that no one is perfect but being human beings, we wish our world is perfect and we feel disappointed when we realise it is not. I was quite a weak child when I was born, and at age two, I was found to be suffering from asthma. At such a young age, I did not understand what suffering meant but the ones who suffered the most were my loving parents. One could tell the worried looks on their faces but not once did they complain and they would do just about anything to find ways for their little girl to get better. I could not even recall undergoing the critical moments during my asthmatic attacks. There were just vague memories of being in school one moment, and the next, lying on the back seat of my father’s car, being driven to the hospital. My asthma attacks were really bad when I was in school. Once, during recess, I sort of lost consciousness due to breathing difficulties. What a commotion it caused. The next thing I knew, I was lying in a hospital bed. By age seven, I had been in and out the hospital so often that I somehow had the idea that the hospital was my second home. I got used to it and made friends with the doctors and nurses. Some of their faces and smiles are still vivid in my mind. I also remember dancing happily around the corridors of the hospital while waiting for my hospital meal. Once, I even threw up on my father’s hand while he held me on the way back home. Ah, to be carefree like a child! What I remember most though were the moments when my classmates played sports, all I could do was just sit and watch. Then, when my sister joined our friends for rope skipping in the playground, I would be confined at home, forced to look only from inside due to my condition. On top of that, I was not allowed to join them. I was also not allowed to eat or drink anything cold such as ice cream, jelly, or even certain type of fruits. Oh, how I longed to have them during those extremely hot days. Pets were also strictly forbidden. It was a big no-no to go near or touch rabbits or small animals as my parents were afraid that their hair would trigger an attack. Every day, I was made to take a very bitter cough mixture. The consequences would be dire if I were to skip even once. Thankfully, all these were not to last. By age 12, my body managed to somehow overcome the asthma and I recovered completely. It was a miracle and I could not thank enough those who had helped me. Doctors had told my parents that if I did not overcome the illness by that age, I would have had it for life. Thankfully today, I could do everything a normal person could – 1119/2 © 2011 Hak Cipta Bahagian Pendidikan Menengah MARA 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 [Lihat halaman sebelah SULIT http://edu.joshuatly.com/
  • 14. 11 SULIT 9 1119/2 although I’m not as agile or athletic as those with a healthy childhood. I could now enjoy having pets and eat or drink anything I want without fear of falling ill. I remember eating my first whole apple when I was 13. To me then, that was a luxury! In life, we tend to forget how fortunate we are. Too much focus is given on what we do not have rather than what we have. The grass is always 45 greener on the other side! Just recently I was undergoing a particularly dry stint in my business. That gave me sleepless nights and as I pondered on how to move forward, suddenly it all came back to me. I was reminded of my asthmatic childhood and the importance of being grateful for what I have. Even though I am going 50 through a difficult time, it is alright because I am no longer sick. Tough times do not last, but tough people do. • 18. 15 SULIT 1119/2 Section D [20 marks] [Time suggested: 35 minutes] 32 Read the following poem Nature and answer the questions that follow. We have neither Summer nor Winter Neither Autumn nor Spring. We have instead the days When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields – Magnificiently. The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs And there is no sound but the swish of water in the gullies And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds. Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun. But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey, When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air, When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.
