The movie has all the right ingredientsto make it an entertaining

ourhouse.Roofswereflying andtreeswerebeinguprooted.Outsideour front
window I could seea nearbyixora shrubswayingwildly. The stormsoon
gatheredin force, Rain was falling heavily,andr.vaterwas poruing into the
housearoundtheedgesof theclosedwindows,
I lookedout of the back door and watchedin amazementas the slope
behindmy Ar.rntMaura'shouseturnedinto a waterfall.Then I heardpeople
shouting,"The river hasburstits bankandis corningdown on us!'oIt was
impossible!Theriverbedthatranthroughthebackof ourneighbourhoodwas
approximately20 metresr.videand20 metresdeep,andwasnevermorethan
one-thirdfull.
Therewas no time to think. As the water camerushing in, my sisters,
EnilleandLalaandI pickedup ourthreedogsand rushedout of our house
with our parents.We didn't getfar whenI sawour neighboursrunningback
and crying out that the bridge was alreadyunderwater. We were trapped
becausethebridgewasouronlyrvayto higherground.
We all gatheredat a neighbour'sltouseanddesperatelytriedto think of a
way out.Severalmensecureda ropebetrveenthetreeson eithersideof the
swollencreek.Theplanwasto holdontothisropeaswe madethedangerous
crossing.Thewaterhadrisento chestlevelandI fearedI wouldn'tbeableto
hold on to the dogs as ',veprossed.I decidedto leavethem at a:rother
neighbour'shouse,whereI hopedtheywouldbesafe.
Severalpeoplehad gatheredon the otherside of the creekto watch oul
progress.However,by the time we werereadyto cross,it wastoo late.The
waterwasrising quickly and comingin full force,Hugepiecesof lumber,
postsandanimalswerebeingcarriedalongata f ighteningspeed- anyonein
the creekwould have beensweptaway.The only option left for us was to
climbto theroof of Atmt Mauta'shorise.
Altogether,29 people,includingseveralmenr.vhohadbravelycrossedthe
creekto help us, weretrappedon the roof. huddlingcloseagainstthe cold
wind. As the hours passed,we grew nurnbwith cold and fear and stared
helplesslyasthe risingwaterlickedmenacinglyat the edgeof the roof. At
onepoint,I lookedoveratthehousewhereI hadleft my dogs.Half of it.was
gone.Sowasourold housenextto it. Despairsunoundedus.

As nightfell, all we coulddowaspray.A municipalrescueteamcame,but
