Educational technology has evolved over the past few centuries from primarily chalkboards and books to increasingly incorporate modern devices. In the 18th-19th centuries, chalkboards and books were the main teaching tools. In the early 20th century, films, photographs and slides began to be used to supplement teaching. Radio stations licensed for education launched in the 1920s. Television was introduced for instructional purposes in the 1950s and computers began being used for education in the 1970s and beyond, with the internet becoming widespread in schools by the late 1990s and 2000s.
