American College of Education
Purpose

understanding of what is required to be an effective educational leader.
 Furthermore, I am utilizing this presentation software to debrief and reflect
on my learning and understanding of educational leadership.

order to be successful.

 Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
 Community of Care and Support for Students
 Professional Capacity of School Personnel

Professional Standards for Educational
Leaders (continued)
 The previous slide listed many different categories of responsibilities and job
requirements for educational leaders.
 Capability of understanding and handling each aspect is crucial to the success
of the school, and in turn the success of each student.
 Every staff member of a school has the goal of benefitting students, but the
ultimate responsibility for the success of the school falls on the shoulders of
school leaders, particularly the principal.
 I will review each of the professional standards that were previously
mentioned in order to show the scope of responsibility for educational
leaders.
Mission, Vision, and Core Values
 Effective educational leaders have the ability to establish a mission and vision plan
for their school, as well as their overall core values.
 Each of these focus on high quality education and academic achievement for all
students.
 Mission Statement
 The mission statement is a shared statement that lays out what the school is focusing on
in order to achieve its goals.
 Vision Statement
 The vision statement is a shared statement that provides goals for the school to achieve.
 Core Values
 Core Values represent what the school believes in for the betterment of all stakeholders,
but especially the studens.
Ethics and Professional Norms
 Most people identify that teachers are held to higher societal norms due to
their position in the community. This responsibility is amplified for
educational leaders, especially school principals.
 This responsibility requires that all school leaders are following ethical and
professional norms, set by federal, state, and local laws.
 The purpose of this is to promote each students’ academic well-being and
success.
Equity and Cultural Responsiveness
 Educational leaders must strive for equity of educational opportunity and
culturally responsive practices.
 Much like every other standard and responsibility, the purpose of this is to
ensure and promote every students’ academic success and well-being.
 Each student is unique, and school leaders need to understand how to identify
and promote methods of teaching and interacting with students in a way that
connects with them.
 Promoting instructional practices that reach all students through
differentiated instruction and universal design for learning is key to
promoting academic success for all students.
Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
 Understanding school curriculum is vital for the success of educational
leaders. Effective educational leaders develop and support rigorous and
coherent systems of curriculum.
 Understanding the curriculum fully allows for educational leaders to develop
teachers properly in order to ensure instruction promotes student academic
success and achievement.
 Statewide assessments are high pressure for all stakeholders involved due to
their weight on the determination of a school’s effectiveness. Understanding
assessments and how to plan for them properly is vital for academic and
school success.
Community of Care and Support for
Students
 Schools can be difficult places for many students. School leaders need to
create an environment for students that cultivates a supportive, caring, and
inclusive school community.
 This responsibility is much more difficult than it seems. School is often times
a place that students do not want to be, however it is up to the educational
leaders to provide a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
 One way to do this is to create a system that promotes and rewards positive
behaviors and deters negative behaviors.
 Furthermore, establishing connections with the students and always
interacting with the students in a positive manner will likely lead to a
welcoming and nurturing school environment.
Professional Capacity of School
Personnel
 One of the more difficult responsibilities of educational leaders is to hire,
develop, and maintain quality teachers. This is especially difficult for low-
paying school districts.
 Educational leaders are often times responsible for identifying professional
development opportunities for the staff, and making proper selections to help
achieve school goals is extremely important for a successful school.
 Promoting proper collaboration and providing constant constructive feedback
for teachers is crucial, especially if the teachers are inexperienced.
 Providing the staff with necessary materials is significant for the success of
the schools.
 There are many different considerations for this standard, but it is without a
doubt one of the most significant ones.
Professional Community for Teachers
and Staff
 Establishing and maintaining a professional community for teachers and staff
is vital to the success of a school.
 Maintaining positive relationships between staff members helps to create a
welcoming environment which creates a better learning environment for the
students.
 This can be achieved in many different ways, including:
 Praising teachers for their work
 Giving positive feedback
 Encouraging interdepartmental collaboration
 Listening and addressing their concerns in a timely and professional manner
Meaningful Engagement of Families and
Community
 Educational leaders are required to interact with all stakeholders of a school.
 The stakeholders include:
 Students
 Staff
 Parents
 Community Members
 Educational leaders must interact with stakeholders in meaningful and
mutually beneficial ways for the betterment of the students.
 Working together with all stakeholders will help the improve student
achievement and overall academic success.
Operations and Management
 Managing human and fiscal resources responsibly and appropriately is a
cornerstone of being a successful educational leader.
 There are many different aspects of a school that require funding to work
effectively, and often times there are more than enough people looking for
more funding. Managing school funds appropriately and in a manner that will
benefit the students the most is often times the best way to use the funding.
 Managing human resources is a tough task as well. Establishing school
procedures, master schedules, and morning and afternoon duties for teachers
can be difficult. Furthermore, school days are always changing due to events
like crisis drills, field trips, required presentations, picture day, and more.
Establishing plans to manage human resources throughout the year is
important and crucial to school success.
School Improvement
 The main goal of an educational leader is to promote academic achievement and
well-being for all students. However, the next biggest goal is to continuously
improve as a school throughout the year and between school years.
 Establishing and implementing plans to continuously improve the school is vital to
creating and maintaining an effective learning environment for all students.
 No educational leaders should ever strive to maintain status quo since there will
always be room for improvement in some fashion.
 This is why establishing an effective mission and vision statement is crucial for
success. In fact, each of the standards covered in this presentation contribute to
overall school improvement.
 Educational leaders are required to create a School Improvement Plan and
reevaluate it each year. This is usually where the school’s mission and vision
statements can be found, including school goals and a plan to address concerns.
Summary
 This presentation was created and posted to share the different
responsibilities of an educational leader.
 Each school will be different in its strengths and weaknesses, but the overall
school environment and school culture lays in the hands of the school’s
educational leaders.
 I am looking forward to becoming an educational leader, and knowing and
understanding each of these standards will allow me to be successful.
