Abstract
Blockchain educational technology has created assessment and management tools for
learner credentials that are permanent, transparent and sustainable while giving users
direct access. Personal encrypted credentials enable users to shape lifelong learning pathways
and personalizes education according to individual values and needs. They allow
for the permanent documentation of both formal and informal learning based on transversal
competencies, adjustable across the economic sector and responsive to situational
needs. Badging was the initial response to online credentialing. Mozillaís open digital
badges have become the unofficial global standard and the specifications remain free.
They may be viewed in e-portfolios and social networks. Yet, if issuers cease hosting
badges, they become invalid even when authentic. Some experiments with blockchain
technology remedy this situation by creating a permanent, secure and sustainable infrastructure
for learning records. The MIT Media Lab has produced the bitcoin based Blockcerts;
whereas the Knowledge Institute, Open University, UK has developed Ethereumís Smart
Contracts to document Microcredentials (Badges). Both are Open Source products. Most
EU nations are experimenting with educational blockchain. The technology creates an
infrastructure to document, store and manage credentials and provides learners with a
sustainable record of achievements they can control. It also benefits universities by
reducing administrative costs and bureaucracy.

Abstract. The 'blockchain' is the core mechanism for the Bitcoin digital payment system. It embraces a set of inter-related technologies: the blockchain itself as a distributed record of digital events, the distributed consensus method to agree whether a new block is legitimate, automated smart contracts, and the data structure associated with each block. We propose a permanent distributed record of intellectual effort and associated reputational reward, based on the blockchain that instantiates and democratises educational reputation beyond the academic community. We are undertaking initial trials of a private blockchain or storing educational records, drawing also on our previous research into reputation management for educational systems. EUNICERT: ETHEREUM BASED DIGITAL CERTIFICATE VERIFICATION SYSTEMIJNSA Journal
The fake certificate is a special global problem in today's digital age. Thousands of universities and educational institutions around the world do not exist but can release hundreds of millions of fake degrees. Verifying the integrity of qualifications is a real challenge for today's employers. Applying the anti-data
modifying properties of blockchain technology, this study proposes a solution issuing and verifying digital certificates called EUniCert to solve this problem. By changing the design and integrating new consensus algorithm used in Ethereum platform into the Unicoin network that was used to verify and store the information related to the issued digital certificate, the EUniCert improves the latency to validate transactions as well as the number of verified blocks in the blockchain network compared to the previous solution that we have proposed. We implement a simple blockchain system to illustrate the management operation of the digital certificates on the ethereum platform. Besides, we conduct a simulation to evaluate the performance of our proposal compared with the previous system. The result is that the average latency decreases by 3.27 times as well as the number of verified blocks increases by 11% compared with the previous system.

Blockchain Architecture to Higher Education Systems de Palanivel Kuppusamy del Department of Computer Science de la Pondicherry University.
ABSTRACT:
The blockchain is an emerging technology that serves as an immutable ledger, which allows transactions to take place in a decentralized manner. It has become a publicly available infrastructure for building decentralized applications and achieving interoperability. Blockchain-based applications ensure transparency and trust between all parties involved in the interaction. The blockchain also makes blockchain technology-based services interest to the education sector. Nowadays, educational organizations focus on online education and propose to create a system based on educational smart contracts in a public ledger. This public ledger will be shared between major offline educational institutes around the world. From a software architecture perspective, blockchain enables new forms of distributed software architectures across a large network of untrusted participants. The objective of this article is to apply blockchain technology in learning solutions and to propose a blockchain architecture to e-Learning solutions in Higher Education Systems. The proposed architecture exploits the benefits of the blockchain and offering security, anonymity, longevity, integrity, transparency, immutability and global ecosystem simplification, in order to create a globally trusted higher education credit system.

2. Education Revolution and how Blockchain is
helping.
Blockchain, the technology behind so many changes is undoubtedly impacting
every business niche. From healthcare to supply chain, Blockchain has various
uses in different verticals. The education sector is yet another field where we can
spot the use of Blockchain. You might be wondering how Blockchain will be useful
in the education sector. In this blog, I will be unveiling the same.
2
3. Opportunities that Blockchain holds in higher
education
We all know that Blockchain is known for the safety and security of data. It can
prove to be useful even in the education vertical. The opportunities fall into the
following categories:
Identity and Student Records: The first and the most crucial use of Blockchain in
education sector lies in maintaining the privacy and security of student records,
their credentials, accomplishments, and other details.
3
4. New Pedagogy: Customizing teaching approach to make learning models for
students.
Costs (Student Debt):Distribution of scholarship funds and rewards to the students
and maintaining the database for the same.
The Meta-University: Designing new model of higher education.
These are the various areas where the use of Blockchain can prove to be
revolutionary and bring in some significant changes. So let’s delve deep into how it
is going to work?
4
5. Identity, records , and Blockchain
Although there are various categories where Blockchain finds usage, I will be
focusing on its practical application in the current scenario.
We all know that Blockchain is a distributed ledger. It has all the information stored
and distributed in the entire network of the system which is also popularly known
as nodes. With the help Blockchain, the institutes and the management can keep
all the records at one place and can easily access this information at any given
time. The primary challenge which the Blockchain helps to overcomes is the
privacy and security of data.
. 5
6. I would like to quote an example here, in the year 2013, a list of 157 strategies
was published by the Education Advisory Board (EAB) collecting data about
students and alumni for colleges and universities to exploit in fundraising efforts.
However, when it comes to securing this information, then universities are
vulnerable to it, the same way the larger organisations.
6
7. So to sum it up in simple words cryptocurrency is a medium of exchange. You can
also exchange digital currency for fiat currencies. There are many online platforms
from where you can buy cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is the pioneer when it comes to
the rise of digital currencies. It is with the rise of Bitcoin that Blockchain came into
the picture.
7
8. There have been cases where the information hacked; the sufferers include
names like – and Kirkwood Community College, Berkeley, Ohio State University
and the University of Wisconsin. There are other examples like the Yale
University accidentally published confidential information online. All these
incidences indicate that the data management and storage are not full-proof and
free from hacking. Instead, they are easily and readily available to the hackers.
Under such circumstances, Blockchain can come as a panacea.
8
9. How will Blockchain help?
Well, you might be wondering, how will Blockchain help in this. The answer lies in
the fact that we can program Blockchain to virtually record everything like birth
certificates, education transcripts, student loans or anything that can be expressed
in code. Blockchain makes use of PKI or Public Key Infrastructure for creating a
secure platform. PKI is an advanced form of asymmetric cryptography. An
example of this is Sony Global Education, which is making use of this technology
for an open data exchange protocol. In this two parties anywhere in the world can
share official academic records. But without the exact two keys, the hackers can't
hack or access the data.
9
10. Validation of information-
Did you know that as per the reports of Career Builder, 33 % job applicants have
lied about their academic records, 57 percent have embellished their skill sets.
Thus, the employer may not be able to figure out whether the candidate is lying or
is honestly portray the accomplishments. In the current scenario, the employer
may ask for the transcript from the institute, but it comes with a base cost. For
example, MIT’s base cost for a transcript is $8 and $2 as handling charges.
10
11. Blockchain platform, the employers can easily access the information from this
platform.
To make advancement in this domain and use Blockchain to streamline the
processes, Universities are coming together. Some of the famous names include-
Boston, EPFL, Delft, ANY and UBC. These universities have decided to come
together and collaborate on certification where they will be sharing a common
platform, Blockchain to issue, store and accredit certificates. This will allow
creating a system where sharing of documents between universities will become a
lot easier and infallible.
11
12. The Verdict
We cannot undermine the strength of Blockchain in any division including the
education sector. It is like a raw diamond as of now, which needs to be more
refined and polished. With current features, a series of benefits Blockchain
technology has stored in for us, and the future with more refinement in this
technology looks promising. The way it can ensure safety, security of information
and ease of communication stands unmatched for now. It is like new energy and
wave of change which will transform the education sector for good.
